View Full Version : Why use wings
Nicool 05-22-2003, 05:12 PM Hye,
I'm a Maya user, I'm keen on poly modeling. What can wings bring to in poly modeling. Is there more tools to help in managing hard mesh? Is the workflow speeder, move the cam, take elements, lauch action, manipulate objects... ?
Is it true that Gollum was modeling in poly in wings ?
Note : I suppose a mesh "translated" into *.obj to be open in maya would not madden me!

Actually gollum is sculpted , than scanned in , than his face targets were made in Mirai if I am right , someone who attented the Bay Raitt speech at 3d festival can give more info.
Anyway ,
Wings perfectly compliments maya in poly modelling , Its much faster to model in wings than in maya and tools such as Bridge , tweak and slide make your life easier. You can always import\export between wings and maya and continue modelling in either one.
Dl and try out for yourself , its free you know.
Yup, Mirai is Bay Raitt's modeller of choice. This confusion has probably arisen because Wings was originally based on Nendo which is Mirai's baby brother. It has now progressed beyond that level and is becoming similar to the modeller in Mirai. Not bad really when you consider that Mirai sells for about $6000! - Baz

I think Sheep is correct about Gollum being sculpted then scanned. BUT if you look in the Art of 2Towers book, you will see a progression of his head being modeled from a box.... Looks like Wings, but I'm sure it was probably Mirai... Maybe that is how the rumor got started though.
Maybe Bay needed something cleaner than the scan for some shots. Or maybe he was just showing off ;) In any case it was pretty cool to see the progression.

I find Wings is a terrific box modeler... period... if you want to box something out, it has all the tools ya need to get the job done... ok, maybe not all, but damn near... also I find that taking things from Wings into C4D v8.1 for final hyperdividing, and rendering, the only way to go... :D

Bay PROBABLY used the mirai built mesh as a sort of lattice cage/deformer to do the facial animation with. Since he did so much work with it. I very much doubt he could have used a 3d scan model to do the animation with , unless he reworked the mesh a crapload.

Thanks!
I've tried it... It's a realy clean software, works well and speed. Realy intuitiv, and I was happy to keep my maya workflow to move the cam! About modeling it's a bit difficult to move component... That my first opinion on it.
I think for futur, they schoud had more poly tools. Not gadgets, but real stuff like some stuff form meshtools, of mj_polytools.
I love it

Hey,
I'm an old Mirai user and I work with the Wings->Mirai->Maya setup and it is the best approach for poly sculpting for Maya I can see so far, except for problems with obj export that really needs to be fixed in Wings before it becomes a valuable tool in a modelers pipeline with Maya.
In regard to Gollum, Fuzatron has the correct info about the scanning in of Gollum, but keep in mind that scanned points are just rough guideline, the modeler still has to model(visualize in 3D) the character from scratch that is why you see Bay modelling Gollum from a box.
Wings is an excellent tool and it has gone beyond Nendo, but it still isn't comparable to Mirai yet. It has some advantages over Mirai in some features, flexibility and ease of use but when it comes to advanced poly sculpting it is lacking incomparison to Mirai.

Nicool , wings has every tool Mj poly tools has and more.
Also if you set up your shortcuts , component selection and moving is faster than any other app.
And lastly , the last thing wings needs is more poly tools , its nice the way it is. It doesnt need to have 300+ poly tools like maya where 250 of em dont work like its supposed to.

And these 250 tools is placed in dozen menus, shelves and such....;) ;) ;) of course it's all customizable to get as efficient environment as possible. I even saw something emulating Wings' tweak in Maya on Highend. But still, Wings works better for me almost rightaway.
