View Full Version : Particle Flow slowness

I'm using Particle Flow to do a fish bank. The particles are shape instanced fishes animated with a wave spacewarp binding, and when I play with the timeline it gets real slooooow. At frame 250 it can take 10 minutes (or even more) to update the particle system with only 60 particles. :annoyed:

I tried adding a cache event but it takes a lot of memory, and if I turn off the shape instance event all runs ok.

is there any way that I can turn off the shape instance event for viewports ONLY ?

How can I speed up the calculations?

you could just do the whole set up with out having the fish deforme and then when you're satisfied, add the deformation and cache it to test it's timings

Now that the particle systems are ok I normally hide them until render time, but it's very annoying to be forced to turn off all the PF Sources when I forget to go to frame 0 before unhide them and then reactivate all again...

Howdy !

there is a spinner that lets you define the percentage of particles to be displayed, i think it's on the birth or render event, maybe that can help you sine it affects only the viewports ?

sure, but it goes too slow even with only 1 particle fish.

The perfect solution would be the posibility of deactivate the events separately for render and viewports, like the max standard modifiers.

hmmmm maby i misunderstud something.......

but why not just set the display misc. event to ticks, dots. lines or cirkle

If you want to turn off the meshes in the viewport you should be able to do that by choosing anything other than geometry for the display node. As long as geometry is set in the render node, you should be able to get what you're asking.

I had a problem not so long ago using face particles, they would update and slow down during render, if your have a similar problem especially if your using face shape particles you might find there is a bug with the camera you are using, so try deleting the camera.
