Ok this sounds basic. But I cannot figure out a good way to do this.
I want to replace the white background on an image(for example http://readerszone.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/windows-logo-readerszone.jpg ) with a custom color.

Whats the best way to do this?

don't know if its the best , but here is a quick way,

go to the menu select/colour range tool, make sure you have the eye dropper tool selected in the dialog box without a plus or minus sign next to it, and click on the white in the image . This should give a selection, then go to the menu select/inverse to make a selection of the logo which you can copy and paste onto a seperate layer, then colour a background layer the way you wish. This is the way I would go about it in this case, there are plenty of other methods as well for doing this.

just tested this actually maybe also contract the selection by 1 pixil before copy and pasteing because there is a slight halo around the logo, to do this go to select/modify/contract and entre 1 in the dialog box.

hrmm yeah, im more intrested to know for example if there may be some kind of gradient how to change the gradient too.

The way you have there is the way i would normally go about doing it. But it doesnt work for stuff with some gradient....

Not sure if I understand you correctly, but I assume you are meaning if the BG is a gradient, use pen tool to trace around each of the four logo elements, creating a new path for each of the four elements. Once this is done turn each of them into a selection, adding to each selection for the 4 paths.

Whenever you have nice, sharp defined outlines like this, the Magic Wand is the easiest and fastest way to good results. Default settings should work fine.

Once you have the selection, you can isolate the logo to a new layer and then you're free to change the background layer as you wish.

As suggested, use the magic wand tool. And at the top of the screen there is a setting for "tolerance". This adjusts how much of the nearest color will be selected with each click. So if you set it really low, it will only select one band of color, and if you set it higher, it will select more of the similar colors.
So set it kinda low and then just shift+click higher/lower on the gradient until you've selected it all.

Once you have a good selection or mask of the bg that you want to change (using any of the methods mentioned above..)
You can just go to layer / new fill layer / solid color.
Change the mode of that adjustment layer to color or hue.
In the color picker, choose the color you wish to change it to.

Keep in mind that depending on the busy-ness of the colors in the bg, the color you want might not show up exactly. Just use curves or another favorite color adjustment layer, and you are done.

Good luck.
