I just built a new computer and reinstalled Max 5.1. I am running a Pentium 4 2.8ghz/800FSB, 2 gb DDR 400 mem, and a GF4 TI4200 video card. What setting would Max run best at, OpenGL or Direct3D. I have it on OpenGL now and see no problems.

nice cpu, and ram you got. :)

but I think, you could get better video card.

openGL is fine I guess.

Er.. better video card? I don't think that's at all neccessary, imo that's plenty of graphics-horsepower unless you want to move into the REALLY high-performance area with the Quadro cards and whatnot. And even then I doubt you'd see significient timesavings in your work.

I say start off trying both if you want to. OpenGL is generally considered "the best" as far as I know. Or.. well.. the normal choice, if nothing else.

Nice rig indeed.

The TI4200 was just a cheap alternative until the FX5900 cards come out sometime next month. Didn't want to drop $300 bucks now and another $400 next month for a new card.

i've always seen max running better (that is: more stable) with opengl. you're missing out on some of these viewport-shaders but you're probably missing out on some crashes as well ;)

with direct3d it seems there is some caching implemented that lets you move around rather complex models smoothly - but that seems quite useless for actually manipulating geometry as the cache-rebuilding takes some time after an update to the geometry.

Thanks all for your input. I will stick with OpenGL.
