View Full Version : z-Depth with mental ray
Elvis75k 05-22-2003, 11:20 AM When i do batch render with maya sw and z-depth checkbox ON, the result iff image contains z-depth images (i can see the z channel with f_check and d-fusion).... When i do the same thing with mental ray, no depth come out! Why??
Please help me
Thanks in advance!

It could be that Mental Ray uses zdepth only if the camera you rendering with, has depth checked on in the output settings.

This is what happend:
I found in the framebuffer attribtes tab (mentalray) some preset of data type... I know that you can render out HDR files with
RGBE (byte) 4x8 bit .... Here i can render isolate depth channel, but it is not insted the _iff, so when i try to import in digital fusion, i can't see nothing than errors...
How can i have a single file with mental ray (iff) that store colors, alpha and z-depth? - of course i have set the camera attributes...
Thanks again

Update:
I render with z-depth information with mr and in the fcheck i see the z-depth as usual (like with maya sw render) but when i try to see the Z in Digital Fusion i can't see it, but in the bottom (info) bar i see the value of the z change.... No fortune when i try to depth blur, but lucky when depth fog..
Sorry indeed for my english, but someone has any hint ?!... :annoyed:

So your .iff files do contain zdepth values or are they rendered sepperatly?
Yoy can load your .iff files in Fcheck and then try the save option. It could be that it will now save the .iff file more correctly.
Maybe you should also post this problem on the Digital Fusion Forum on CGtalk.

Try to open this image with f-check, press z to see the channel...
Try to open the same image with digital fusion, and try to see the depth... Let me know
Already try to save another time iff from the f-check

This is what happend to me today:
i just burn out my brain 'cos i have one image but it change temper... in f-check look in a way and in digital fusion in another way... This frame (elvisw.iff) was render with maya software (still can't view z-depth with mental ray render)
I really want to shoot this thread here and have already added a shortcut from compositing / vfx forum.
