Amazing work here. There is a sad blue world in her eyes.
What's the mark on her forehead about?

Olivier, you make me want to be a better man...lol
is this a boy though? cuz it looks like gal with lashes eyeliner earing braid facial structure etc....
i don't care if it is though, still gorgeous and instantly one of my favorite pieces from you, i don't know why but this piece does something some of your others doesn't (not to say your others are bad, just to say this is one of the most exceptional pieces i have ever seen.)

WOW!
Your work has always been very inspiring - and this is by no means an exception!! Excelent execution!
I love the classic feel to it, and the use of a limited color palette is very refined. Love the feel of the cloth as well... GREAT JOB!
I wouldn't mind seeing ur wires and maybe a bit of a break down if you don't mind.

Do you make up stories about your characters? I feel like this kid lives in the same world as the Cold Blue woman.

Hi reiv,
What I like is the overall colour, shading, materials. What I don't like too much, is that at first glance it looks like that it is the very same model, you used to use. Maybe you should try another type of woman...Anyway it's still an excellent image

The only thing that bothers me is the mark on the forhead, a little to sharp at the edges.
Never the less, 5 stars!
is this a boy though? cuz it looks like gal with lashes eyeliner earing braid facial structure etc....
I'm sure it is a girl - in the description it says "his monkey", most likely because in french the possesive agrees with the object, in this case the monkey which is masculine. Probably just a french->english grammer glich.

Hello People!
Just a curious "urban legend" I remembered when I saw this picture:
- Here in Brazil, when I was a child, it was very usual to find this kind of paint picture selling at the stores, almost always at gas station's store. And always hand painted with the same theme: "Portrait of a crying children."
People said these kind of pictures were painted by artists which have made a deal with the devil. That was the reason of the great success of the piece.
But, if we look deeper to the picture, we could see that the clothes of the child, in truth, had another meaning. Details of the clothes formed a devil's head: the shirt-collar formed the mouth; buttons (bottoms) formed the eyes; fabric folds and the design of the clothes explicity showed a devil's head devouring the child.
That was the reason why the children were always sad and crying.
Well, I'm not sure if this is only a urban legend or not, but after this story became notorious in the coutry, this kind of art disappeared of all stores, and houses...
The legend said that people who has bought the picture must throw it against a big waterfall to break the curse...
That's it.
About the Opal Child Picture, what a great piece of art: Five Stars!
Best Regards.

Arf, nouvelle brûlure des yeux en voyant ce... tableau !  That's a great piece of art !
Tout simplement superbe... J'adore vraiment le subtil mélange qui s'en dégage.
Simply beautiful... I love the subtile mix between several moods... It reminds me an Ingres painting but with a photographic work (chromatic aberrations work well), the french comic "Le Mercenaire" (V. Segrelles) with its unidentified times and clothes inspirations, or a slight gothic mood like on Cold Blue... Quel plaisir pour les yeux, mec !
Can't wait the next one ! :applause:

I thought it was a photograph.
Congratulations.
Thnaks a lot for your comments guys!
About my creation process, that's pretty simple: everything, except the monkey fur is hand made with polygons. So I usually start from a quad and just create, extrude and cut polys to get what I want. The lignt setup is pretty simple : 4 area lights surrounding the character (1 key light, 1 fill light and 2 rim lights). I didn't use final gather or GI, there's only direct lighting.
I didn't create any particular story with this character, I just tried to create a consistant and believable character, that's all :)
Here is the wireframe:

Your mesh is far less dense than previous meshes i've seen from you, but it is equally effective!
I think though, reiv, in your attempt to make a belivable character, you have created a character with story and history. Though you may not know what the story is, you can tell this child has had a life before this point, and will have a life after this point (i like to think that the scar is from an altercation with the monkey. If that's the case, will there relationship stay as calm as it is at this point in time, or will something happen again?)
I also hope that you've noticed that at the moment, this piece is the highest ranked ever in the 3d section of the 3d gallery (and it still totally deserves it)
edit: guess i spoke to soon. That's really too bad, why do peopel have to vote to take people's scores down for no reason?

I can see bones on your characters... I think you used bones to pose the characters, but two questions.
Did you use bones on the main boy characters to open mouth or rotate head?
Did you use polys with alphas for the human characters' hair all the time?(I mean eyeslashes and eyebrowns).
I can see you 've great skills 'cause achieve this level of quality painting the hair and shaders is difficult. I've to say again that has been finished very well all the elements and everything match perfect. Amazing professional and artist work.

The moderators have to do something about the people who act childish and abuse the rating system in these forums. This has happened too many times to the point that star rating just doesn't mean anything anymore.
I'm so baffled by the immaturity of some (apparently many) cg talk members.

bonjour Olivier,
what an amazing job as usual. Totally breathtaking!!! You know, you definitely show us what 3d really means:D A tiny comment still, what is the mark on her forehead? does it represent anything special? :surprised I find that very odd. Its edges are a hinch too clear, to be accurate.
I get the impression that you simply chose a mark and copy/paste it on her forehead without tweaking it if you know what i mean.
Anyway good job as always. Can't wait till next scene!
ps: How heavy is your file? seems huge to me:argh:

kick ass man..
I love the black line on the lips and the scar/mark on the face also looks cool,(though it does look as if it was Photoshoped on top of the render).
The lips are nice.
And so is the monkey.
everything just comes together.
my only crit would be that you have a bit more blue in there than there should be (to me).
it is making it a bit monotonous..

The child's eyes creates so much emotion in me because I get a sense that her world has tried desperately to destroy all her happiness leaving an aching shell. I also feel like that she will become a great dark contribution to her dark environment and that because of it, she'll die young. It really is quite beautiful. So much story in one still image. It carries a powerful effect.

This image was the one that 'broke the camel's back' in pushing me out of Poser and into 3DS Max.....
After viewing the portfolio's here - and , finally joining the message board part of CGS - I am experiencing intimidation which hasn't been around me much for some time. That's a very good thing pushing me beyond my comfort zone, and, well, nothing great is created from a position of comfort, right?

Since his stuff puts to shame even most zbrush and mudbox enhanced models, and he's only using 3d studio max, is he working from a stock collection of 3d figures and simply modifying various parts so he gets an array of 'looks'? I ask because I see an obvious similarity between several of his women, and I think that is because they all come from a stock source repository that he made and can pull out and slap together whenever he wants to.
What is this man's bio? His education? etc...I'd be interested to know. I don't even want to hear 'self taught' because no one learns what he does on their own. Nobody learns how to model like that and paint their own textures like that on their own, so I'm imagining some big time place like the design institute over in Florence or something. Am I correct?

Oliver, fantastic work! I love the painterly feel you achieved...excellent work my friend. ;)
PS-I only realized now that it was your work featured in the 3DWorld on realism in humans. Killer images there, and a fantastic article.

Oliver, I didn't read all the posts sorry if I'm repeating the question.
Please, could you show a little your lights&render setup with mental for this kind of scenes?
Talking a little about the materials/shaders could be great cause of the big conection with the render engine. Any photon parameter change or glossy interpolation in the materials?
What about the SSS for skin, did you used the "SSS Fast Skin+" and a "SSS Fast Skin+ (w. Disp)" of MasterZap?
Thanks for your time, sorry for all these technical questions and my english ;)

When I first saw this image I was blown away by its brilliance, it's truly a modern masterpiece. I frequently look through my favourite galleries and I'm always drawn to this painting. The popular saying is that familiarity breeds contempt. Far, far from it in this instance. Familiarity has bred a nagging doubt about her eyes, though. It's such a very minor quible that I almost feel petty mentioning it. I know her eyes are kind of droopy and sad but something about the pupils is so slightly off. Is it just me, I wonder?
Still a 5 star image in my book.

Amazing workd from all aspects! No critics except maybe...
If it's meant to be a boy, you did a bad job lol :D The facial features, the makeup, the hair, the piercings, everything screams feminime. But maybe there is a reason fro that, part of the story?
Once again great work, I love the colours, the emotion, textures. Great art.

I love the way you manage to achieve a quality to your images that makes them look painted, but at the same time photorealistic. You're a great inspiration.

This is one of the most beautiful human type creations ive seen on here so far. I love this one inparticular due to the gothic look. Sorrowful and delicate. Dark colours which is always a thing i enjoy seing in work. One of a kind. Love it completely

This is truly one of my favourite character pieces. Excellent artistic 3D render. I really love the subtle stereoscopic look, it gives it an old, pseudo realistic postcard look.
Can you explain a little about your eye techniques (the liquid look) ?
I Love it!

Looks great. It's a girl though, right? In your description you said "him" but that might have been a mistake.
A crit: The strange shape between the eyes is a bit distracting. Is it supposed to be a mole or a marking (ritualistic/fashion?) or maybe wear on the photo (e.g. water damage)?

Outstanding quality and mood. The famous gipsygirl style reïnvented in 3D. Curious how much work was done in 3D and how much in post. 5 stars!

It's like in painting, there are so many godd painters, who is the best ? No best, but I am very sensitive to your art, because, over painting or modelling, there is such a reality which appear through your characters.
I consider you render the expression of what virtual art can be, that is to say, a real and fantastic art.
