The animation was done in-house. A joint effort of the San Francisco & Singapore units.

Looks pretty good to me. Stylized, clean character design. More charming than your typical FF cut-scene anyway.

i agree that the stylised design is better then too realistic stuff .. but in this case , my buff is with the animation, shading and lighting

I'd say the live-action prequels looked more like fan films. I think the level of storytelling, and characters are more suitable to animation than live-action, so this might be better than the last 3 films.

I have pretty high hopes for these. The 2 'mini' cartoons that came out before 'sith' were actually pretty good. In a lot of ways the Anekin character is portrayed more succuessfully (ridiculously powerful but out of control...angry, etc.)

Doesn't look good to me either. One thing that stands out is how bad the swinging light sabers look. They look like they are comp'd in very badly.

This was good for me... I'm not too picky about Star Wars. I am a huge fan and I appreciated every episodes. The previous Clone Wars cartoon were to my taste and it might be the same with this CG serie.

I have to admit, I haven't been at all impressed by this. And thats coming from a total fanboy that would be 100% supportive of more feature films (don't care who directs them though, as long as Lucas is in a big seat of some kind).
But this just doesn't do much for me. For one, I'm not a big fan of the cartoon character looks. I would have much rathered something at least a little on the realistic side, more portraying the looks of the characters from the films. The characters are based on that, but I would have wanted a little less of the exaggerated features. Yoda looks like a fkn ferby.
The animation isn't that great. Well no, I guess its great. But I'd expect THE BEST from them. And this aint it.
And the voices... the voices. Why not use the actual cast? I could tell right off the bat it wasn't them. It looks like Sam Jackson is in, but I guess hes the only one. Ya its cheaper, but I dont want to hear that from them. Star Wars is a friggin empire. Spare no expenses. You can certainly afford it. And it would take no more than a weekend to round up the main ones, and throw them in a sound room, . Even Yoda. Why throw Frank Oz to the curb? The man isnt dead yet... And if memory serves, he voiced the prequels over a telecast. So, come on...
Back to my original statement. I love Star Wars. I want more. But if you're gonna do it, do it right. Go all the way, dont take any cheap short cuts. Deliver to your fans.
This trailer does look a lot better than the other stuff I've seen, so I guess its getting somewhere. I'm sure I'll still go see it, buy it, and love it. Put a score by John Williams on something and I'm there. But I expected more.

I still dont see how this is going to fit in with the previous Clone Wars cartoon and the movies themselves.
To be honest I would rather them make an animated series of Timothy Zhan's Empire Trilogy or even Dark Horse Comic's Dark Empire graphic novel. Dont get me wrong, I do like the whole clone war thing going on in the prequels but it would be nice - just once - if George acknowledged his fans once in a while. Hell, it would be ****ing awesome if he got Zahn and Madhouse animation together for the Empire Trilogy...

Stylization/animation/lighting aside, there was not a single interesting shot in this entire trailer. Looked more like a series of boring stills from a trading card set.
Normally I would have said "How could they make Star Wars boring?", but the prequels pretty much answered that question. This looks so lazy and uninspiring I wouldn't even watch it on a plane.

That's actually a good idea! And hey, wouldnt it be ironic for Mark Hamill to reprise his role as Luke given his post-StarWars career as a known, talented animated-voice artist? Makes sense actually. I always liked the original cast better than the prequel cast.

some of it looks very cool, From what I've seen Jabba is so far the best looking character.
My biggest beef, as echo'd by several others here is the shading and lighting. It looks (as best as I can describe it trying not to be offencive) is dry/lifeless. I honestly can't blaim the artists though as I know how it works, nothing would have seen the light of day without "higher approval" also the enviorments seems empty compared to what we've been expecting to see.
other bits though I really liked, squidlike ship at the beginning looked interesting, and I liked the scale of some of those gun fights.

How neat would it be if they took some of the books that take place after Episode 6 and do them in this style with Hamill, Ford, Fisher, etc doing the voices?

New trailer looks awesome. I saw a few combat and sprawling panorama shots that really captured the feel of the 2D series, looking forward to the August release :D

My impressions...
- Much of the design work, especially the characters (not yoda) seems daring
- The animation looks stilted, as if somebody forgot about the concept of f-curves
- The writing, at least what's on display, reeks of direct-to-DVD
- The party involved in cutting together that trailer should be taken out back and thumped. (Really bad pacing, very little momentum, and not much payoff.)
- The voice work sounds good sometimes and Saturday morning cartoon at other times.
I'm interested, but not exactly balls out crazy over what I'm seeing. It looks like they've done a fairly competent job thus far. I think I'll wait for DVD though - simply to avoid the whiny fanboys and screaming tots.

I really think this movie is an experiment in film making. Getting movie ready CG on a budget.
Lucas has talked a great deal about making cheaper movies. He says for the price of Clone Wars he can now make like 50 movies or something crazy like that. I think he may just prove it.
I think he is trying to move things in that direction as a whole. Cheaper films but get the look up good enough to be in the theatres. I think he has something going.
I really think this is a test to see what can be done.

I agree with you totally on that Ilive, with technology and techniques moving foward, in 5 years this will look and feel very different. This is an ideal vehicle for testing the pipeline that has had to be constructed for this project.

I really think this movie is an experiment in film making. Getting movie ready CG on a budget.
I can't point you towards any specifics with regards to the budget.
(These are my personal opinions and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer)
But I do believe that for our industry to have a lasting impact into the future, we really need to get costs under control. Efficiency CAN be achieved without a major sacrifice in quality. It necessitates the construction of a pipeline that lets the artist just 'get it done' without getting bogged down in technical hitches and producer interference.
There is too much re-iventing the wheel going on. That may have been necessary back when the only 'wheel' in town was square. But these days there are powerful off-the-shelf tools that often rival the proprietary solutions anyway!
The exciting stuff in CG used to be all the fancy whiz-bang simulators, etc. Now the real race is to create powerful tools to make the same amazing visuals but in a stress-free and efficient manner.

i did like the stylized look of the characters.
this demonstrates some stylization its way more efficient than mere realism as it happens to be in movies like FF and so on.
that being said, considering we saw animated series like Jimmy Neutron
i think the level of the overall trailer is pretty basic.
but this series could improve over time.
however, i think the concept to allow better results through more production focused tools for the artists is a good way to go.
with 3D its possible to give life to fantastic things , from toons to realistic creatures and more, but how much time and money all this involves yet?
tools are there, but the focus should be on making em less technical and more artist oriented.

I guess this takes place sometime during the first Cartoon Network "Clone Wars?" Looks cool to me and I'm glad they are doing it, but it feels a little like they are treating those brilliant 2d cartoons as inspiration and almost erasing over them. I guess that's fine in a weird way. Will they re-do the second one which leads right into EP3?
This is a jumping off point for the tv show correct? Not sure I like that too much, but we'll see. The problem with episodic TV keyframe cg animation is...quota, quota, quota....and....more quota.

well i like it.the shots seems good and teh character designs are fun to watch(exept count duku, hes to exagrated)...animatyions are what these designes needs..i think its more of makaing CG cartoones cheeper in cost.....so we dont have to exept CG qualities like Beowulf or FF series....although i LOVE to see a star wars with that kind of technique.......

I'm a 100% fanboy. I love the Style!
but the animation looks like shit! Its not even close to what it should look like from a company like this.... very sad to see that the quality is here going down as well for the money.

holy crap!!! you've already said too much!! pack your things, you're done buddy. done. you even told them about our square wheel?
my experience with working on this project so far has been nothing short of spectacular. there's so much creativity running around the building that my head just wanna explode from trying to suck it all in.
if you like what you see now, you'll probably crap your pants when you see what you havn't seen. but if you don't like what you see now... you'll also probably crap your pants when you see what you havn't seen.
hmm.... i need to be more vague.

I dont at all fault the ones who are working on this. Its just a combination of personal preference (I dont like the cartoon designs), and the fact that I think some major decisions were made here, by the big guys, in an effort to shortcut some things. And the price has compromised what could have been.
I'm not going to like furby Yoda, but I do see progression. I have no doubt that the final product will most likely blow away anything we've seen so far.
But I dont think every ounce of potential was filled here. Which given the fact that this is Star Wars, that really disappoints me.
I do look forward to what you guys come up with though, I'm sure it will be great regardless.

I really think this was the point in this film. To make a stylize Star Wars movie but within a reduced budget.
I think Lucas who created the blockbuster is really trying to reel in the cost now that they are so inflated and help bring people into budget film making and using creative solutions to make a movie.
Like he said in an interview, he could make 40 movies for the cost of 1. I think he is out to prove that.
I do think that if they make this movie at roughly 20 millon dollars then there will be some cost cutting.
If you think about it the rising cost of movies have to come into control before it strangles it's own industry.
When blockbusters start costing 250,000,000 - 300,000,000 it will be harder and harder to justify that cost. It's got to be reeled in and I think Lucas is looking toward the future.
You do know if this takes off some folks are going to start working on tighter budgets and use more creative thinking to get things done rather than throw money at it.
So if you think this movie loos somewhat rough it's because it's really a test in what is only going to get better in the future. I don't think Lucas is the end all be all but he does have some experience in this area and he has innovated for several years.
Keep raising the costs though and they will almost kill and industry. Think when Disney spent 140 milloion on treasure planet and it flunked they pretty much destroyed 2d for the last couple of years. Then when Disney did it everyone else did it.
Imagine when blockbusters cost 250,000,000 a pop and imagine when it is harder and harder to relay costs it could almost kill the blockbusters or originals. So kudos to Lucas for taking ths step.

Precisely the point I was trying to make. The really exciting thing about smaller budgets is that production companies can then afford to fund risky stories.
As long as CG movies stay in the ~$200mil range, they must cater to an extremely wide audience or they risk losing money. That usually means a watered down script that is digestible by the general public (with a healthy dose of pop-reference and trash humor).
Films in general are slowly losing their interest for me. I'm completely sick of superhero movies for example. And I don't care if I see one more CG cartoon filled to the brim with focus-group inspired garbage. Thank god Kung-Fu Panda didn't suck...
