View Full Version : ae 6.5 will not run on new pc
evanfotis 06-11-2008, 12:05 PM This had been bugging me quite some time ago ..
I used to have a nice setup of ae 6.5 & plugs in my old win 2k pc.
When I tried installing it in a new core2 winxp32 pc it would install, would open, but that was it. Could not use it. No command worked, hotkey or anything.
(There was no ae cs3 installed on the pc initially.
After cs3 was installed the same thing.)
Why?
Recently in a post house, working with macs, i was told they faced exactly the same issue. I figured, that there, hardware and OS changes where to blame, but on the pc with the same OS?

Please get this silly notion out of your head. It's not the same.
a) Win 2000 is drastically different from XP, regardlesss of what you think or some people will tell you. It's the difference between a mule and a "real" horse.
b) when you buy a PC with XP today, you get XP SP2 which again is a completely different thing from the original XP. It never installs certain components of Internet Explorer 6 or MSInstaller pre v3 (or 5, depending on whichg numbering scheme you believe in), which is probably the dealbreaker for you. On updated systems these components simply exist.
c) If you have not yet installed other programs on the system, some other components may be missing. This can be something silly as a legacy Mediaplayer DLL that some tools install to retain compatibility.
Very likely one of the 3 possible causes is the culprit, but unless you can replicate the exact setup and install sequence of you W2k system, this may lead to nowhere and never work. anyway, with CS4 around the corner it seems silly to waste any effort on trying to fix a legacy software that is 3 versions behind the then current one by spending hours on tracking down some missing components, so maybe you do better by finding a reliable dealer with a good upgrade deal to CS3 and a grace period for CS4, possibly.

Thanks Mylenium, that was quite insightfull.
I had no idea that early XP versions where so different than the current ones, in so that some applications would not run..

I totally agree.
It is just that I had a nice setup with all the plugs as mentioned which worked on 2K and early, updated XP versions, that would be great to use now on a faster machine for projects that do not utilize cs3's newer features.
As for the news hint, is cs4 expected b4 xmas? at last 64bit?
