You could create a new "Reflect/Refract" map, then turn on the "From File" radio button. This will give you the option of using ortho renderings as the top, front, right left, bottom, ect.
Now, If you'll notice, there is a "Render Cubic Map Files" section at the bottom. This will actually render out the maps for you(and save them to files), from the POV of any object in your scene.
Give it a try, as it works wonders. If you don't want to use the "Reflect/Refract" map, you can still use it to get the .tif files of the different views, and add them together in PS.
Just a thought off the top of my head, but it could work just fine.
I'm sure there are some better ways of doing it...
Check www.scriptspot.com
And www.maxplugins.de
I think there's a script or plugin to do what you want...

FYI, a cubic reflection map (six bitmaps) is always better than a sphereical map (one bitmap with major distortion at top and bottom).
But if you still want a sphere projection, maybe try this...
