View Full Version : Trouble with symmetry object
Zmurowski 06-09-2008, 02:57 PM Hi lads.
I am having trouble with the symmetry object - while it works wonders for the geometry it has a weird way of handling textures which aren't mapped with UVW coordinates. I have an object, pretty complex, with phototextures on it, most mapped with flat/cubic. Now when I use symmetry the textures on the other object are not in the right place, which probably happens because symmetry doesn't create mirrored coordinates for the texture tags. Is there a way to fix it without having to create UVW coordinates for all the textures (most of the object are NURBS).
I'll be gratefull for any tips.
Cheers

IMHO, do a current stae to oject and re-apply the tex.
I think the original is saved in the OM, if not, revert
and make a copy.

Yep, it's an unfortunate problem with the current symmetry object.
If you really need to maintain the symmetry object (rather than making the whole thing editable) try this:
Assuming it's OK to turn your NURBS objects into editable polygon objects, it's fairly easy to fix UVs matching your current projections - just select the texture tag in the object manager, and click 'Assign UVW coordinates' in the Tags menu. This should give you UVs that are pretty much identical to the cubic/flat projections (not necessarily 100% identical though, since there are some limitations when going from clean implicit coordinates to explicit polygon-based coordinates, but usually the difference is quite subtle).

OK, I think I found a way around it, thanks to my mate at work - if you create an instance object, and the give it a -1 scale in the axis you want to be mirrored, you will get a flipped instance with the non-UVW mapped textures intact.
One more thing apparently the stick texture tag also helps

Sorry guys, I made a mistake and post a wrong message in here. I could not delete it,
I am really sorry:(

I wrote my Undertow plugin (http://skinprops.com/undertow.php) to help with situations exactly like this (http://skinprops.com/ext/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?73). There's a free DEMO version (http://skinprops.com/download.php?view.33) available (some functionality is disabled), and the full version is reasonably priced (see first link :) ).
