is there a way to move a vertex along an edge when modelling?

pretty mucha maya noob here, but I think something with the magnet or snap toools should do that, I was reading a bunch about many techniques on this, and it should be possible there.

sorry I can't say absolutely.

Open the tool window for the move tool and select move along normal lines. You can also try the move component tool under edit polygons.

The 'move along normals' function doesn't move along the edges of the vertex. :(

I hope somebody knows how to do this, it would be a big timesaver for tweaking stuff.

you can move a single vert along an edge simply by crv snap sliding to it, it ghosts the edge so you can move back and forth. but that just for one vert. to do multiple, one method is to do a move component on a collection of edges, and scale them from end/start origin (option on the node) - the problem is, if your edges dont have the same polarity, its fuxed. anyone feel like writing a script to sort this?

Thanks Wrend, this does what I needed for single vertices. It's a bit hard to get it to slide over certain edges sometimes, but it works great 90% of the time...

A script that would slide multiple edges and vertices like this would indeed be very nice :)

thats one of the reasons i am using wings 3d over maya.

the slide plugin does exactly what you want , you can slide vertex's edges and edge loops. real timesaver.

Vertex sliding in MAYA?, it磗 as simple as move the vertex over the edge pressing "c" letter on your keyboard, but move it with your middle mouse button, it won磘 work if doesn磘.

As simple as that, no mel, no scripts, that option is there since Alias PA...

and its great for a single, lonely, point...

Marcel,

Remember that to move a vertice on an edge, you press c (or snap to curves) and then left or middle mouse click on the INTERSECTION of the yellow dotted circle and the edge in which you want to move along. Otherwise, it will not move as you want. Then it will work 100% of the time.

Thanks rock! That is very insightfull. I was already wondering what the trick was, because sometimes it worked and other times it didn't.

I would love to be able to do this to multiple edges and vertices at once, I hope Maya will have that feature at a certain point in the future.
