I have a problem that max won't let you alter perlin marble when using it as a bump map... It is always on at full strength which isn't really a problem cause you can change it in the map slot menu but it doesn't seem to be effecting the right area either. It acts as though it is a noise procedural because it creates noise like bumps not marble bumps. Also when you change the color of the marble italways stays the same even when both are pure black they still act at full strength and in the wrong areas.

I hope this makes sense. anyway I hope someone else has this problem and knows how to fix it...

Sounds like you need to adjust the size,...

FYI - I think Peter Watje offers a 2D version.

nope it is the same exact size as my diffuse map yet it looks just like noise and doesn't reach to changing the colors. Does it work right on yours.

I have had the problem with the black and white colors not having influence on the bump strenght. Have you tried using the 'output' curves to make the map less contrasty?

that isnt the only poblem otherwise I would do that. the other problem is that you can even use maps withing the perlin map and the perlin seems to be working like a noise bump not a perlin bump

Perlin Marble. Ugh. What I've found to be a pretty bad procedural map in max. From what I understand maya has a much more in-depth perlin marble.

Not sure what you're using the map for, but you may want to think about creating a tilable, or preferably full sized, photoshop image of your diffuse and bump channels. Then use those. You'll have much more control over whatever it is you're doing.

im using the map to crete a rust map for a network of pipes.. Im using it instead of a bitmap because it would be very very annoying to map all 100 or so piece.

excuse me I don't mean 100 I meant 1000

Well, in my opinion, you're perlin marble efforts may not turn out as nicely as other possible solutions. As you have noticed, I don't like the map type. I would recommend trying to use clamped turbulent noise or some other procedural map, maybe smoke.

Just my opinion.. good luck with the perlin marble!
