oh hehe, i had forgotten a little detail :)
my PaintFX-tree is converted in to Polys.
And has to much vertices for bakeing via "control point".

I really haven't had this problem since I haven't used Maya 5 yet, but if the trees are animated with any kind of vertex movement (such as a deformer) you might try the bakeCloth mel script over at highend3d in the cloth section. It bakes the mesh into a blendshape and It plays back complex models in real time. The scene still gets very heavy though.
The script is, despite its name, very useful for any deformed objects, not only for cloth. Helped me out a zillion times

Don't try it on paint effects! That won't work! Try it on the polygons instead:p
