View Full Version : Material Editor
3d_man_89 05-21-2003, 03:51 PM In the material editor, there are only 24 material slots. I was thinking that some complex scenes might require more than 24 materials. Is it possible to change the number of material slots so that there are more than 24?

A material can exist in the scene without being in the Mat editor. The Editor is only for...ahem...editing :)
So, unless you can think of some way to work on 24 materials simultaneously, you wont ever need more than 24 slots (I rarely use more than 6 at once before clearing the Mat Ed to speed everything up).

Sounds strange but so it is.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Remember, this is German insider humour!
Native English speakers might not get it - Klingt komisch, ist aber so! ;)
Btw, I wrote a MaterialEditor Extender script back in the Max 2.5 days that gave 1000 samples (with only 24 visible at a time, of course). It was prompted by the daily requests by new users for "more than 24 materials in a scene"...

I suggest Discreet puts this in large friendly letters on the front of the Max box... but wait, most people asking for more than 24 samples haven't seen the box... ;)
Damn!

try to use materials library for save your materials. or try to use multi/sub object material and use ID channels for your objects. but personally 24 it's enough. :D

For clearing out the editor, Blur's clearmedit.ms is great. I use it just about every day.
