Title: SEGA's VIKING - Hel
Name: Michael Kutsche
Country: Germany
Software: Painter, Photoshop, XSI

Hel, Skarin's evil opponent from the recently released Sega/The Creative Assembly title Viking: Battle for Asgard.
The task was to achieve a rather realistic and more detailed feel of the in-game character. Since it was used for life-size standee prints, the artwork has an extremely high resolution, it was a challenge to bring in all the details while preventing from a too stiff and unnatural look with that huge size. 95 percent done in Painter X and Photoshop CS3, only the chain whip is 3d.

I could have sworn the shadows and reflections came from 3d too.

Wow, well done!
Very nice work:thumbsup:

06-06-2008, 03:15 PM

Love everything about it, but mostly the heels! Your painting is phenomenal, every one of you pieces is absolutely top tier. I just joined but I've been lurking a while and admiring your work since I first found the site.

Can't wait for the next one!

06-06-2008, 03:44 PM
ufff great art!

06-06-2008, 04:13 PM
kutsche, you've given the figure in your piece perfect weight, balance and stance.
Great job!

06-06-2008, 04:34 PM
wow, extremely realistic! Great lighting and that character has an amazing texture over her skin and outfit. Just stunning.

06-06-2008, 04:40 PM
Fantastic rendering. I really like the way you handled the light hitting the whip. The body is great also. Solid

06-06-2008, 05:52 PM
hey thanks a lot for the nice words, mates!

06-06-2008, 06:40 PM

Insane painting skills. The skin looks so real, 5 stars!

06-07-2008, 03:31 PM
Wow, I love everything about her design. She looks attractive yet scary at the same time. Great work, and very well rendered. 4*s

06-07-2008, 08:56 PM
This would be 5* work even in 3D.
The fact that it's a painting is amazing.

It must've taken awhile.
Which begs the question:
Why did you choose to do it in 2D instead of 3D?

06-07-2008, 09:01 PM
Hey Michael,

I've always been a huge fan of your paintings (I did that animation a while back of the helicopters along the huge wall)...and this one is no exception! Great character...love the whip! :D

06-07-2008, 09:06 PM
Superb work mate!!!

06-07-2008, 09:27 PM
thanks a lot guys, such nice feedback really keeps me going! :D

06-07-2008, 11:54 PM
Great work dude, could you possibly elaborate on your 3d/2d workflow? Thanks!

06-08-2008, 12:23 AM
Amazing, truly amazing!

I can't believe this is a painting, it looks so believeable and "correct" in a perspective and lighting way of things. Really impresive!

06-08-2008, 12:57 AM
Perfect work as usual! Congratulations!

06-08-2008, 01:49 AM
Some awesome painting there!

I've reclined from posting answers to several other technically good stuff, simply for not catching anything particularily good except techonology. But this is truly great artwork. You've made a good and realistic anatomy on that lady and I also like the face, nothing looks quite perfect the way CG has you see people. Very good dirt and realistic skin somehow, can't quite explain. But I really like it. Truly.

06-08-2008, 03:43 AM
2D!!

06-08-2008, 05:56 AM
wow.. nothing to say ***** Amazing work as usual..

06-08-2008, 06:13 AM
wow, amazing 5 * for sure :)

06-08-2008, 06:34 AM
Incredible work. I would love to see a biggre version. Not the fullsize, because it's probably huge, but it'd be nice to see something at least twice bigger than the linked picture

06-08-2008, 07:09 AM
Bloody amazing! You must have put some effort into that. No crits from me!

06-08-2008, 07:38 AM
freaking! Stunning work, but well, weŽll be europe champion soon, this is a good sign. :)

Hammer Arbeit! Aber pooh, die Gute hat sicherlich jut fussjeruch! :)

06-08-2008, 08:12 AM
Are her legs hairy or is that a new hosiery design?

Michael Angelo

06-08-2008, 08:15 AM
She's beautiful, your work is perfect !

06-08-2008, 08:40 AM
very well done mate...congratulations...:).

06-08-2008, 02:52 PM
WOOOWW!!! Thought this was 3D . Very impressive.

One small crit is that the head looks a bit on the small side.

06-08-2008, 03:00 PM
great sense of lighting, very believable, and the skin tone is perfect.

06-08-2008, 03:57 PM
Well, I know I am repeating what have already been said but; your understanding for light totally blows me away!! As a nit-pick, her right knee seems a little off but I have been looking at this picture for 5 minutes and I couldnt spot anything else I dislike about the picture. 5* Cant wait to see more of your work, amazing painting !!

It may sound greedy but It would be awesome if we could get some process shot aswell. :)

06-08-2008, 05:05 PM
thanks for the nice replies!

@ michaelangeloart: in the original nordic mythology, hel, the goddess of death has skeleton legs. but since that is too harsh or not sexy enough for the gamer universe i guess they rather wanted decayed legs.

06-08-2008, 06:21 PM
Truly a masterpiece...you're one of my favourite artists at the moment. +5

06-08-2008, 08:56 PM
I can stand the game or its art direction, but this illustration is technicly outstanding.

Im a wee bit touchy about people pissing all over our awesome nordic mythology andViking: battle of asgard really hit my sore spot.

06-09-2008, 04:44 AM
Hey Michael, another great piece man! You already know that im a huge fan!

One thing that confuse me a little is the right arm that s covering a little bit of her waist. Maybe with it higher or lower you got some better silouete of the model.
But thats just to criticize something :D

Thats really awesome..;) hope someday work on some of your characters.
Congrats again mate.

Take care.

06-09-2008, 06:31 AM
that's amazing, i loved the style!

06-09-2008, 08:03 AM
Amazing work! :applause:

06-09-2008, 08:20 AM
Thought it was 3d too :) , it looks so great ! 5 stars from me :applause:

06-09-2008, 08:34 AM
It's an outstanding illustration  5* I'm agree with the other coments. BUT ! I'm not sure she has the right shoes to go fighting ;)

06-09-2008, 10:02 AM
One small crit is that the head looks a bit on the small side.

I agree. I realize there's a strong perspective in the whole image, but the head does look slightly too small... unless she's unnaturaly tall, like you'd expect from a nordic heroine.

Otherwise it's great work, both technicaly and artisticaly. Her face is just... wonderful, for the lack of a better word.

06-09-2008, 01:11 PM
This is one of the best warrior women I have seen. I especially dig the dirty heels and feet. Something your typical frilly woman will not tolerate :)

06-09-2008, 02:00 PM
awesome work :applause:

06-09-2008, 02:12 PM
Weird seeing her lower legs so dirty, yet the rest is just kinda, well, not clean. Like to see that dirt dithered in a bit more. I am drawn right to that contrast.

Other than that, I dig it.

06-09-2008, 02:27 PM
I though was 3d, absolutely amazing work!

06-09-2008, 04:00 PM
Unbelievable that this doesn't have 5 stars. It deserves six.

06-09-2008, 04:26 PM
I too though was 3d,
dude you rocks man.... im speechless :applause:

06-09-2008, 07:03 PM

Another awesome work from you! I wouldn't want to mess with her! She looks wicked. 5 stars!

06-09-2008, 08:15 PM
Oh wow absolutly brilliant. Nice job I love the textures and the way the whole thing comes together.

06-09-2008, 10:01 PM

06-10-2008, 05:26 AM

06-10-2008, 07:07 AM
Thanks for all the kind replies mates! :D

@ mindrot & Fenring: Thanks for the comment, will keep it in mind for the next artworks!

@ WormGod: The legs aren't meant to be dirty, rather rotten. Like I said: In the original nordic mythology, hel, the goddess of death has skeleton legs. but since that is too harsh or not sexy enough for the gamer universe i guess they rather wanted decayed legs.

@ lucas: Danke, Mann! Bin demnaechst ein paar Tage in London, da wuerd ich Dich supergern mal wiedersehn! :)

06-10-2008, 07:30 AM

06-10-2008, 02:04 PM
very nice pose and the character. she is really hot. congrats!

06-10-2008, 08:37 PM
Now I understand why the legs look the way they do.

Wow, she is still disturbingly sexy :)

06-11-2008, 02:40 AM

06-11-2008, 08:56 AM
Great work as always , however this ain't that powerfull as "SKarin". Few things in my opinion you should think about before you produce another charcter, not big mistakes ,rather small "issues" .

1.i am not sure how those high heels works (upper part )-are they nailed to the legs? Also think how this girl could perform running in those shoes and I don't mean anything about high heels (rather angel area -they too wide ) - maybe they are not very comfortable durring sword , hand to hand fight or chargeing but still this is possible and as you said they are sexy :)

2. Someting is not right about her lef arm ,the shoulder point and elbow has missing link to me

3.Makeup looks ...bad. This probably works cool in close up as a portrait but from the distance and low res it darks too much the face and ,and makeing eyes invisible , I'm looseing eye contact with this person

anyways great modeling and cool finishing
I 'll keep my vote to myself this time

06-11-2008, 02:28 PM
@ WormGod: The legs aren't meant to be dirty, rather rotten. Like I said: In the original nordic mythology, hel, the goddess of death has skeleton legs. but since that is too harsh or not sexy enough for the gamer universe i guess they rather wanted decayed legs.

Hmm, just one of those visual interpretations that goes awry without any background/artist input. I try not to get in the mind of the artist before seeing the work to see if they could visually portray the image in the manner it is intended for the viewer to see it.

Gotcha now though. But, I still think it looks like dried mud or some sort of fungus instead of necrosis or decomposition. Just call me nit-picky though, having just come off of working on some stuff that involved undead-like cadaverous tasty goodness, heh.

Keep it up! :)

06-11-2008, 02:57 PM
Master ... teach!
How can I continue in my work now ...?:deal:
