After having read "Dreamcatcher" by Stephen King I couldn't help but modeling Mr. Gray teh way I picture him.
I haven't watched the movie yet to remain unbiased (though I heard it blows anyway :p)

He's been modeled in Maya with SubDs, as you can see from the wire. There's still about 3 Tris in there, but I'll clean the mesh when it's progressed further. Note also that this is still Level 0 modeling, since I switch between Polys and SubDs frequently.
I'll start refining him when the feet are done. :p

This is my second modeling attempt in maya, so if you spot any areas I could improve or have any tips, lemme know please.

thanks

That rocks dude, but you already know it... =) I'm really "erstaunt" (I don't think it's the good word in German) of what you make under Maya Phil, and I finally believe that you're a multi-task 3D graphic designer... What a luck!

Can't wait to see the next part of this alien... Cya man! =)

Hey, the modeling is very clean and precise. right down to the ribs, nuckles, and eyebrows.

But the character is still a bit on the generic side. perhaps the clothes you put on him will take the character to the next level.

How is the character supposed to be dressed in the King novel?

philip
05-21-2003, 02:46 PM
he won't be dressed at all :D

I was planning to wrinkle him up a bit with level 1 and 2 etc.
to make him look older. Then add veins, some modeled some by texture only...

he's supposed to be one old, ugly and mean bastard. I thought the face was already showing his character, but I'm open to suggestions.

Good job!

I'm about 3/4 of the way through with the book right now. (Haven't seen the movie yet either) and he looks pretty good to me. You should add some byrus (ripley) to the final scene. Maby model a bathroom full of the stuff with Beaver's legs hanging out of the tub... And if you could make the worm critter that would kick ass...

Nice work philip!

Your Alien is really nice! Clean mesh, all quads! No crits for me!
Could we get some close up shots of the head and body?

Can't wait to see it finished!

fnally found a little time to update him. The legs are more refined now, he's got some feet etc.

as for teeth, I can't really decide yet. I thought piranha-style razor sharp teeth, what do you think?

oh boy, looking at him now is pretty embarressing...

LOL he slept on my HD for over 6 months now, I almost forgot about him. Just took out the mesh on thursday to see if I can come up with some half decent results by monday

the plan: correct anatomy, add evil-ness :P then take him over to ZBrush to sculpt further details, then generate a displacement map, make a basic rig for posing in maya... ack, who had the stupid idea a day should be limited to only 24 hours??

here's how he looks ATM:

Oehhh... Scawy Istah Gay.... hehe... saw this movie yesterday! But didn't his brains look a little bigger and his mouth smaller? Maybe you can find some pics from the moment he stands in front of Jonesy... when he takes over his life ;)

This moment:

For the modeling... Nice Work!

philip

thanks to both of you!

@JDMedia: I haven't seen the movie and avoided all images/previews/teasers to remain unbiased and really model *my* vision of Mr. Gray... (seemed to be the point really: weren't they all seeing what they expected?) skinny, wirey, real old and mean.

so, if he actually resembles the one in the movie, I can't be *all* wrong, right? :D

anyways, thanks again for your comments, if you spot something weak just let me know. gonna tackle his hands tonight I guess...

1. Fix the back of the neck. The superficial muscles of the neck, the trapizius covers the lower occipital bone on the skull, and the cervical vertabra. See this illustration.
http://www.bartleby.com/107/illus409.html
2. Will this guy have ears? If not, will there be an opening where the ear should be?
3. The pecs should be convex not concave.
4. Detail the quadriceps.
5. Get rid of the crease below the knee cap. This should be the head of the tibia, the medial and lateral condyle. It's round not creased.
6. The ribs below the sternum are in an inverted V shape, it should be an arch.
7. Finger, and toe nails are flat. They should be curved with contour of the fingers and toes.
8. Texture maps. Maybe muscle striations in a bump map?
9. Will the mouth have an interior? teeth, gums, and a tongue?

10. Be crontructive ;)

Hey man, looks cool! Better than a standard grey. Kinda reminds me of the X-Files aliens from the X-Files Movie.

@marc001:

and to answer your questions:

2. nope. his race is communicating through telepathy, but he has two openings above his eyes to sense differences in air pressure; so he'll be able to pick up sound as well.

3. hmm. I thought the current shape would underline his skinniness... don't you think?

8. the plan is to bring him into ZBrush for further detailing, then generate displacement maps.

9. tough one. haven't really decided yet. he's able to speak, so he would need a tongue. not sure about gums, and definitely no teeth.

Quadriceps are thigh muscles.

On skinny people the pectoral muscles don't show up, just the ribs.

philip
02-10-2004, 05:20 PM
alright, a couple of issues fixed:

the trapezius, the knees, finger and toenails, pectorals altered, general tweaking of the hand and fingers (thumb in particular)

current polycount: 4730 SubDs

Looks good, however, he looks like he's going through some grief... the one in the book to me didnt seem sad, or in pain the way this one does... he just seemed pissed... whatever this model is great, i love the face regardless of the expression
