View Full Version : Character: Marilyn Manson
three 05-21-2003, 12:58 PM Allright. I'm back after a LONG way just browsing.
This time with a cartoon version of Marilyn Manson, to be posted on a swedish fanboard.
Crits is very welcome.

Thanks, and cheers

Edit: The head was removed from the picture. It's not the "real" head anymore.

No crits? That must mean that it's a pretty fly model
Come on people, I need some constructive criticism.
New build:
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kung3/3d/newbod.jpg
New to build 0.2:
- Removed feet to rework them
- Added and textured eyes
- Modelled the ears to completion (they will not show much, therefore lack of details
More to do for build 0.3:
- Finish feet
- Add hair
- Model teeth
- UVW the whole mesh
And the things you come up with. Give it to me :D

I think the model itself is not bad, but you have failed to catch the essence of his face :hmm:
You have exaggerated some features of the face, since you're going for cartoonish look, but those features don't come along very well, that you can't tell that the character is Manson. The only thing I can easily notice is that the nose is modeled wrong: it's too round overall. Perhaps if you put hair, long eyelashes and heavy makeup, it might look similar to him
Dunno, I can't go so far because I'm not a character modeler :p
Sorry if it sounded too harsh, and good luck :buttrock:
catbert

i really really REALLY like it
although i think the mwkm is right - it dosent quite capture manson - although i think it does as much as possible - but then again, you dont have any hair, texture, clothes, or even a pose yet.
i think the model itself is great, and i love the eyes - although those eyebrows are a bit too harsh. flatten them or something. and the hip area dosent seems to be defined at all.
anyways, i think it's coming along GREAT - with some textures and a pose it will rock :applause:
good luck with uv mapping. that's the worst part there is. ugh.

No update today, got too much work to do, and I'm switching jobs as well. Now I'm going to get a position in a toystore combined with a pet shop.
mwkmn; Thanks dude! It did sound harsh, but that's what I'm after, at least some of it :D
You really caught all the things I'm having trouble with. The head. I'm no good reference drawer, or any good at charicatures. So, I'm totally with you on that the head is wrong. I thought it might get better with makeup on him, and a huge dope hat.
I'll keep working on the head until we're all satisfied.
catbert; And a huge "thank you" goes out to you too, motivating as hell. I will continue to refine the model and try to make him look more lik Manson.
Regarding the hip area. Do you think that will be needed? To define it? I'm going for the comic style, a bit inspired by Ciceto on pepeland... at least as far as the body goes. :) I've never done comic in 3D before.
But thank you, please, say what you think about the hip area. And I do know about the UVW stuff. Eeek.
I'm working in 3D Studio MAX 4 as well... the UVW-Unwrap mod. is a pain in the arse.
Take care all you guys and give me more feedback!

Hey,
Thats coming along really nicely, I do think some modification is in order. One thing you might like to do right away is his eyes. Eyes are the essence of character, so if you are stumped for ideas, try doing really accurate texturing of his eyes, it may help draw out things you haven't seen before.
I've been thinking about doing a realistic version of him.
Keep up the great work!!
Edit: His iris's pupils need to be MUCH bigger

Hey Three, cool idea. even though this Manson guy is really scary looking, a caricature of him could be really funny. Yeah the makeup will add alot for the likeness, along with a flaring of the nostril wings; also how about softening the cheekbones by making them rounder in the upper parts.
Oh yeah, one more suggestion for now would be the lips; along with the nose I think you should make them fairly accurate in realistic detail to photos of him, the rest of the face and the overall proportions like the nose and chin look great.

Thank you dudes :D
I'm gonna get to work on the face after this weekend... maybe on tuesday night or something. School and work has me hooked.
dark_lotus; Thanks :) I'm having huge troubles with his head. The eyes took me some time to even get properly into his head :D I've been trying to do some sort of realistic/comic version of eyes, but the modelling of them takes time... but who has said that I'm giving up? ;)
Thanks for the ideas and I'm looking forward to that realistic model of him. Give me a message on the mail or something if you start up with that.
Threedeemer; Aaaaw, he's not that scary dude :D Thanks for the tips about the cheekbones... I'm going to go postal at his face sooner or later :)
Thanks for the motivation guys.

Hello again. The second time today.
I've done a new reference of Marilyn Mansons face. I would like some crits on it. Know this: I can't draw all that good.
Does it feel Manson... do you have some tips?

LOL! that's a good one! :)
i would also give him an addam's apple - (i think that's what it's called) - like that eagle from looney tunes.

catbert; Thanks! :D That's a huge boost. I wasn't so sure about it. I mean, I've seen tons of pictures of him over the years, but only like, three-four without make up on. I think I got pretty close to him.
I've been thinking about that adams apple as well, but I think that would break the androgyneous look I'm going for. I'll think about it some more though.

dark_lotus; Rocktoons rock! :D I hadn't seen the other pictures on there. Only the one in the dope hat. The one you sent me helped a lot with revising the nose. Now, I'll stick with my left side sketch... but I can't seem to capture him in front view. Look here:

I'm using this picture for the front view sketch (and yeah, he looks like an old lady there)

Hello again :)
It's been a while now, but I've been a bit busy and I've also been working on the Head.
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kung3/3d/newface02.jpg
- Completely new mesh.
- Started modelling "real" eyes.
Now, this is going to be my mesh. It's ready for reconstruction. Give me your opinion!

05-27-2003, 05:37 PM
'elo my fellow CG people :D
I've finished the eyes I think. The lens was a bit of a problem, but I think it'll look good when lights are added to cast shadows. besides, the head won't be submitted to all too many close ups.
Still, I really like to have a complete mesh.
I'll be moving on to ears and hair.
The hair will be applied using Shag:Hair by Digimation. I just have to figure it out :D
If you know a page with a tutorial or something I'd appreciate it. The tuts that follow with the plugin are just confusing.
Without further ado, here's the head.

Yeah, alot of his persona comes from the nose and lips, dont forget the flare to the nostrils.

Hi Threedeemer. :bounce:
I've been working on the lips now... Hopefully I'll have an update for you before friday. I don't want to stray too far from the original, and he's got quite thin lips. It's the make-up that makes his lips seem larger (he puts lipstick outside of the lips).
I promise you that I will not forget the flaring of nostrils :D
Take care

Hello again.
At last I've had time to do something about this model.
I'm thinking that I've practically finished the model, but before I go into textures it would be great to know what I've missed.
I did a small texturetest earlier, on the head alone, and he looks a lot more like the Manson you all know, with makeup :D
Please, crits are critical (ha ha... lame)
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kung3/3d/01.jpg
Take care
edit: oh yeah, something that's pretty hard to see on these are that I've enlarged the lips on request. They're enlarged like 1/4 from what they were. Big difference, hopefully this won't be a problem now.

skii; One navel and a set of nipples, coming right up :D Don't want to put too much detail into the body itself, feels like I'd loose some of the "cartoony" look. And besides, the model is well up above 11K polys right now. And I haven't even put clothes on him yet :D
I'm looking for ways to get the poly-count down somewhat, but can't find a good way of doing that.
koinu; Thanks! :D Hopefully the guys who I'm doing this for will accept the style.
I have...
... enlarged the feet and hands
... tried to cut down on polys
... add one navel
... add detail to chest area (nipples)
... started to try out Shag:Hair, without any good results at all.
If you guys have tips or links to tutorials regarding Shag:Hair, please share, I can't seem to find any.
Rock on.

I have...
... problems!
My mesh has just ****ed itself up beyond recognition. Literally.
When I move the view around (3d studio max 4) the mesh is like before, but once I stop dragging it become:

Right now, I'm trying to figure this out.

Thank you for those encouraging words ;)
Found out the problem though, but with that, a couple more generated, like Imps from Doom.
All my UVW's get twisted. Something is seriously damaged in my program.
:hmm:

Okay, I've figured out what made the UVW modifier to **** up. It was something with the body. I've begun to remodel the body, again... this time a bit smarter.
Update sometime tonight.

yes, MM owns ^_^
great idea!!
I await completion
Three,
Man sorry to see that happen.
If it makes ya feel better to hear it happens to others then:
I had my city go nuts in a similar way monday....Had to go back in my saves and send out a new file. Reapplying textures bringing in lighting and fluids was a bitch as well. Hasnt happened to me in the much with maya. But when it does it hurts. Last time it was this bad was almost 2 and ahalf years ago. Easy fix in about 3 hours but irritating to do work again.
So if it has to happen again I hope it will wait for a couple of years like this time...lol
BTW: your not totally starting over right? Are you saving in numbered increments? Or are you just decideing the model could be done differently?

(the second time I try to post now *irritation*)
Hello all you fantastic mother****ers! ;)
First of all:
UPDATE
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kung3/3d/Portraitera2.jpg
As I stated before, I have totally redone the body. Which was a smart move, I understand now afterwards. This body was in a whole different league when it came to UVW-mapping him. A lot easier to work in the UVW Unwrap.
I have tried to work with the chin as suggested, hopefully it's finished now. Because I have NO idea of how to go back through the UVW's and redo parts without screwing up the UVW's. :D
This is Marilyn Manson pulled back through, time to the era when "Portrait of an American family" was released.
The strange colours on the top of his head are ID's for Shag:Hair.
I'm working my way through the plugin and am getting a better understanding of how it works.
I still can't get his hair to look like I want (therefore no image with hair), but be sure, I'll post an image when he doesn't look like he's in a storm or something.
Now:
Replies
Hexodam; Does it look better now? His face will become different with different make-ups. If you think about how he looks without make-up, this comes pretty close. Atleast I think so. :D
Vash T Stampede; :p
Actually, that's true. I'm going to put the Mechanical-suit on him as well, all full with 6 fingers, 2 toes and tits.
Threedeemer; Yeah, it's gonna be a trip to skin him. Never done that either. This is a LOT of new shit for me. Gonna be cool.
If you meant that he's not properly modelled for animation, then he actually is. Sorry, don't understand what you mean by "revising". Take care! Love the things you're doing over at your thread.
KWAK; Go go go doppelganger!
Pent; Thank you :D Keep your eyes open, new updates tomorrow, if time allows.
ME3D; Ow. That sucks :hmm:
Max seems to have some problems with parent/children. That the parent inherits opacity from it's children is just plain strange.
Yeah, I did remodel the whole body (except the hands, but I did some work on them too). Took me about 2˝ hours, not a lifetime of work, but still. Irritating.
If the head was the thing that were FUBAR, I'd probably die. I hate modeling heads.
Take care now, and citicise this. I need tips and stuff for the Shag:Hair.
OH! Almost forgot. The things that go across his body is just texture-placeholders. Those will be modelled in the final.

Hexodam; Thank you :D By the way, you don't happen to know anything about Shag:Hair do you?
Vash T Stampede; Haha, you think so? I would probably like to say that it reflect the Mechanical Animals atmosphere... The androgyneous thing. Not the other eras.
But that's my take on it.
Be calm, the tits are coming. ;)
Right now: Research around the different eras.

Looks good...maybe a little bit boxy in some areas but good regardless...waiting for an update.... And I also think that realistic looking hair wouldn't fit the model...try doing poly hair or just a solid bunch of hair with some details in that....just a suggestion.

Remi; Thanks for the crits!
I was thinking about a polygonial mesh for the hair, but he'll have a whole BUNCH of differend hair styles. And when I'm using Shag:Hair on him it actually fits the style I'm after. I'll post an update as soon as possible with that. Maybe a picture just to show what I mean.

UPDATE
Hello again my friends. I've been trying to get a basic understanding about Shag:Hair, and have done so. I'm posting this image, with just a glance of what I've produced with the hair, which I got to be really proud of my self over (allright, today, my english sucks :D)
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kung3/3d/newface03.jpg
The hair still doesn't look all that good, and the collision is still to be figured out. But I think it gives the model a cool contrast. Looks like real hair, but isn't :D
No lights in this piece either, except MAX's single viewport light.
Crits!!

i think it could look really good.
but the mouth needs to be changed
its too thick and doesnt look anything like it - even if its supposed to be out of proportitons.
i also think the size of the cheek bone area is a little too small, by the reference your using i can see no corolation :/
anyways GL w/ the model, and cant wait to see it finished

I think he could use a small hint of ribs on his chest...since Marilyn is kind of skinny and all.

keep up the good work! ::thumbsup:

mage111; Have you looked at the previous displayed model? The one without hair? Just wondering, because it could be that the hair covers the cheekbones.
I've been thinking about the lips as well :)
But I think it's gonna pretty good when the textures are applied.
gimpfarfar; Thanks :D The ribs will have to wait until I do the real-life model. ;) I don't want to loose any charicature hints. Regarding the adams apple; I thought long and hard about that, and decided against it. I kind of like to keep the androgyneous look that he's got today.
