Hiya!
Working on a bat arm/wing rig to be used for a movie. Now, I've got the base model and rigg done. The skinning is also done on the actual arm. The problem I've run into is the wings, how would I go about doing the thin pieces of skin in between the joints? I want it to be able to stretch along with the joints on the wing while they move.
I have tried just using a simple box type object and use regular weighting on the verticles but the end results wasn't quite what I expected.

you could try building curves along the joints, then build surfaces using the curves...as the curves move with the joints the surface will follow...

So.. uh. Not that great at rigging yet so I'm not following you 100%.
So first, in max, create a "Line". THen to turn it into a surface add on an extrude modifier.
Then how do I get the curve (and surface ) to follow the joints how?

I don't really know max at all so I have no idea how you'd do this...

build a curve based on the joints...I guess you could use regular weighting to get the curves to follow the joints...
then build a skin between the curves...

Howdy,

Have you considered using a cloth simulation for the wing membrane? ;)

Here is a thread where using cloth for a dragon wing was discussed:

Haven't really used splines much either before.Anyway when I apply the surface modifier to my spline I only get a flat face. However if you look at the tutorial they get a whole bunch of faces and alot of detail on their surface.

Also on the tutorial the basic shape of the skin is a triangle on the top attacked to a bottom square. And there's a line between the 2 shapes (they're still one object though, attached together). I've tried for quite a while now but I can't seem to be able to use a regular "cut" from edit. poly while working with splines - to create that cut off middle point.

I'm not sure how important these 2 issues are to the end result just wanna know if anyone knows how to fix this? I could probably get by the way I have it now though.

Also, they keep mentioning adding a "edit spline 2" modifier. Is this some special edit spline or what?

I'll second Cactus Dan on using cloth for this. In fact, Paul Hormis (www.hyperent.com) has a tutorial for this exact thing if you buy his cloth DVD. It's quite good I might add =)

hi, iam so beginner but i can help ,i have an idea
u wanna to make the wings in between bones(between the fingers of the bat ) have curvelinear appearance when the wings go up and down in flying thats what i get
so i think that u suppose to create a plan between the fingers (or any other object)
then make a spline with 5 verts or more as u like then create bones and then attach that bones with this spline and repeat that about 3 times along the plan make your skin
i know that way will waste alot of time but thats my idea
