Title: The Voyager Response
Name: Stefan Morrell
Country: New Zealand
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, Vue

This image came out of some quick 3d concepts made in Vue Infinite..The ecosystem makes working with big cityscapes very quick & easy

buildings & ships modeled in 3dsmax,rendered in Vue6 with heavy post in Photoshop...according to Vue the polycount is in the billions :o

thanks for viewing!

Could you explain your workflow? The texturing especially, lighing, but the other stages too - it would be great to have some explanations on this. Thanks ;)

yeah it's a nice big complex scene and i like it a lot...
but for small chit chat sake i will throw a couple of thoughts on the table:D

the fact that the buildings have a nice dynamic despite their strong and heavy base (they are box shaped) is a nice accomplishment.
Maybe you could extend a bit more your sky towards the left of your scene...and move that huge spike a bit to the right so it goes right through it. Right now the spaceship's surface is kinda smooth for going into the "light tones" by itself...I think a little support from a spike next to it would help...I am just guessing here:hmm:...what do you think?

as allways, a superb image. i guess you realy should consider pushing your luck a little bit and try some posts to ILM. In my opinion, you have the spark man, the right mood for some great cinematics!

Damn! This is the first thing in a long while which has made me gasp. (whilst drinking tea :p) I'm a sucker for this kind of artwork. Huge futuristic landscapes. Consider yourself favourited and firmly 5 starred!

cheers guys

Neil..good point about the forground,I agree it needs some kind of seperation but I wasnt sure what to do with it.I thought warming it up might blend in too much with the rest of the pic so instead cooled it down(though now it just looks neutral)..the normal thing with a forground is to up the contrast but that also would have blended too much with the background,

stage-gr..I think I'd disagree about spreading the sky out to the left,I was very keen on having the center of interest only on one side of the image as that helps keep things looking dynamic, interesting comment about the spike too..I almost think the image would be better of without that tall tower in it,some seperate support towers for the ships could be cool though..good idea :)

Gal..I tend to do my personal images in spurts..so you'll see a bunch of pics from me over a couple weeks & then nothing for a few months:D

Glacierise..workflow for this was pretty smiple,I was just messing around in Vue,laid out an ecosystem of my greeble blocks on a terrain..clipped the base of the terrain so it had an irregular edge..then copied & flipped it upside down..at that point I knew the image would be heavily atmospheric so focused on placing the 'ceiling' in a way to make best use of the volume light.it's also while setting up the ceiling I decided to put some ships into the scene as a focus point,I also added the tall buildings at that stage
the main beauty pass uses GI for lighting, most of the citylights on the ceiling were painted in post, textures for the buildings are very basic, tiled patterns

Cheers
Stefan

That you're a genius when it comes to broad sci-fi vistas has been clear to me for a while. What I wonder now is how you manage to be so damm productive! You make every one of us feel like small children playing with crayons!

I am getting to this a little late, but this is a fantastic image. How did you make the top part (the cracked sky shelf thing)? Maybe I can narrow that down to this: I am curious what it might look before the Photoshop work, and then what did you do in Photoshop? Sorry if that is too big of a question, but if you are able to share anything, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!
