Hello, I'm new to the Matte Painting section here. I have some experience with photo editing, but this is my first attempt at a true Matte work. I may eventually use it in an animation I am planning, but am certainly enjoying this medium. Here is my first attempt at the city matte:

What I've done so far:
Grabbed a photo I took of Takayama a while back; extended the canvas; deleted the sky; modified the levels and colour balance; added a simple gradient for the sky; gave a first crack at adding a large moon; added a 3d structure in the city.

What do you guys think / suggest for improvement?

Thanks,
Adam

Hey Adam , welcome to the forums, well it's a nice start for matte painting you have a good aidea of integration but I think it can be improved more, I'm not sure about your 3d structure matching the photo lenear perspective, also I would add more texture detail to the moon and get rid of the perfect CG edge and blur it a little. some other more interesting architecture can help too
good luck in matte painting and keep showing the community your work

Thanks Jaime for the nice welcome, and tips which were spot on. I will continue to post updates as I continue.

Bit of an update: I was going to work tonight on improving the individual graphical elements, but realized I have a larger compositional problem. The animation I might use this in will be using an HD Image Aspect Ratio, and though I intentionally made the image tall for vertical panning, it was just too thin.

Here is a sketch I just finished on expanding the image width:

This shows how the matte would might appear in frames using an HD IAR:
