never done it , but im sure its all textures, just texture a sphere with color/spec/bump and adjust to get all the grooves , add dirt, a bit of wet look , throw it on a soccer field scene and your done , cant be too hard

You'll want to use textures definitely, but make sure to use displacement for the main panels or it won't look right. The maps will also have to be pretty high res to look good.

check out the tut of www.suurland.com
there is a very fine soccerball tut...maybe you can use it in maya too

If you download the bonus toolset for Maya 5 (available from alias|wavefront's site) they have give you a soccer ball primitive you can use.

I've always modelled soccerballs, easy with wings.

1. grab wings from www.wings3d.com
2. create an icosahedron
3. select all verts, bevel to 0.75, there's your basic shape

now to create the seams:

4. select all edges, bevel 0.1
5. select one of the small triangles that sits in the corners of the seams
6. hit 'i' to select all similar triangles, 'e' to convert the selection to edges, and 'c' to connect. That creates the base of the the seam.
7. move->normal, push this center crease down -0.05

finally, round out the panels:

8. select all the main panels
9. inset by a small amount
10. collapse, leaving a vert at the center of each panel
11. move->normal, push these center verts out by 0.15

Now just export an obj, import into maya. You can then assign materials per face, and when you're done, polysmooth to taste.

i am on the same track.. hehe
i did some resarch and maya is definetly too complicated into making a damn soccer ball
what i had to do was..

LOL check this out

1. use the tut from suurland
2. use Lightwave to get the main shape
then export to 3ds
3. then import the mesh into maya 4.5 with the 3ds import plug
( would go straight to maya 5.0 but i duno if the pug works
there)
4. save as a maya file
5. open with maya 5.0
6. continue with the tut but on maya... if u know the terms its
easy to translate the tut from LW to Maya

7. then i selected the faces i needded and i saved them as a
quick selection for the pentgons

8. extruded the faces making sure ( keep faces toguether was on)

8 paint Select faces on the exagons
(exagon per exagon)

9. extruded each exagon

10. render using Mr

here is a pic.. though i am right now working on the complicated part wich is that on the soccer ball is a pigeon as the logo, but it is not as a texture but as part of the geometry

anyways.. ill post a pic since i am talking about it...
though i gotta wait for the freaking render

sincerely

Why is it squashed?

its cuz of the video format
720 *486 D1/ dv

with and 0.9 pixel ratio

it makes it look like that....
but once u take it into tv it works fine..
