View Full Version : Modelling: How do you avoid 5 star points?

Hello,

While modelling this lizard-dog type thing i have encountered a small problem (not to major, just me being picky) where i have 5 edges connecting to 1 vert, the result is a star pattern;

Low Res Mesh (with edges)

High Res Mesh (with edges)

High Res Mesh

If anyone knows how i might avoid this, or edit the model so that i can get rid of that effect i would be very grateful!

Thanks alot for your time

James

What you are seeing here is known as a pole; any vertex with more than four edges. However, you are mistaken about the edge count. From your smoothed version I can see six not five edges on the affected vert. As for how to get rid of it, there's no trick. You just have to figure out how to change that corner of the mesh where the edge joins the head to get rid of the offending vert or to eliminate the six sided face that is generating the bad pole. See the Sub-D sticky thread for more poly modeling info.

Two diamond shaped quads maybe?

Thanks for all your replies everyone! Sorry about my lack of correct terminology (thanks nimajneb for explaining) and thanks marcel for the diamond quad idea anyway, that will come in handy for reference.

I have another question now :/

How do you delete an edge without removing the face? When looking at edaddy's (thanks edaddy for the suggestion) image it seems that i will have to do this.

Thanks again for your time

Select the Edge or vertex and just hit backspace, or the remove button in the edit poly rollout.

Thanks for the reply i am currently working with an edit mesh modifier, if i turn the model into an editable poly it flattens my modifiers, is there anyway to remove the edge without it being an editable poly? If there isnt thats fine, i shall just have to get used to it.

Thanks again :)

If your edit mesh modifier is not the last in the stack you can put a poly select modifier above this. Right click on it and select "collapse to". Than you have a edit poly at the bottom and all the mofifiers above your former edit mesh stay there.
