View Full Version : Challenge WIP: Johan Thorngren

Ey gang, just found out about this lil thing from the cgchannel.com main page basically and got amazed by the amount of action that was in here so I got a lil taste for joining up. I checked out the 'specs' posted by lildragon and produced this scribbled thing:
(larger image at http://www.trinisica.com/img/gallery/in-progress/cgc-pirate_01_l.jpg
So, dont really know if its alrite to use the "A Prosthetic part" as the actual head but lildragon thought Id should go ahead anyway, so feel free to give me some input on what you think.
The head would be a la some security cam thing with a telescopic/binocular eye (you know like those extending binoculars) and might have some lil foldout wings for steering around once using those glider type of wings thats grafted onto the ribcage. The wings will fold together and rotate down to lie basically flat against his back when they are in-operational.
Tail being of some very thin rat like type and he sports a lil patch of hair on the top-rear of his head.
Anyway.. Ill try to get started on this anyway but feel free to say whatcha think ..

good ideas, go ahead and show us more :) but don't forget he has to look like a pirate too ;)

so.. started fiddling with the 3d model now..
Dunno if its really too early to post the 3d wips, but since its a 'Challenge WIP' thread Ill just go ahead ;P
Im generally just starting to tweak the dimensions of it to form a clearer vision for myself on how the general shape will turn out. Im starting to ponder a bit about the 'old-looking', squarish technology.. maybe I should go more with sleaker more rounded forms..
The stomach is going to turn a bit more into a beer-stomach later down the road..
I really like the idea of using the prosthetic head. Can't wait to see more of your work!:) :p :D

Thanks Ikmo, working hard to catch up with ya guys and managed to squeeze in a few more hours today. :p
Im still all over the map so nothing is really done yet even tho the detail level is rising on the whole..
Still trying to get it to look a bit more friendly/cute.. might end up relying a bunch on the gestures of the creature..

android's head, huh? good idea! nice defintion on the hands too.. good start!

very cool. The hands are very nice. I like the head. To me it give a bit of a "wolf" feeling. Much like an old Tex Avery cartoon.

thanks guys.. :) hope to get a few more hours today after a very nice sunny weekend here in SF..
The hands are probably whats most done on the whole thing, Ill try to move upwards the arms and torso today or tomorrow..
Tao; Yeah.. I think so myself actually ;) It might be the pants that are doing some of that ;).. we'll see how it looks when they get some definition on them

Häftig design Johan! Tufft huvud...(?) Hoppas bara att alla som jobbar som små grisar hinner klart innan deadline! :)
En kort fråga: jobbar du eller går du i skola i SF? Kanske du kan rekommendera något om det är så att du är verksam inom 3D nu. Jag letar nämligen efter någon bra utbildning som kan hjälpa mig att komma igång ordentligt!

lil update from a yesterday ;p
epatnor; try to keep everything to english in this forum, please. Im currently unemployed here in SF as so many other people. More about my thoughts on education and all can be read on the FAQ on my site :: http://www.trinisica.com/sub_about.asp?lv=4&mode=0

The body looks top notch but, I think the head could be bigger. It seems to bother me a bit. It looks like something out of starwars.
Anyways great modeling as always. And its nice to see some character modeling instead of those Brazil experiments:D

didnt really manage to get any time into it today, but got one new little image though..
blc318; yeah, I was playing around with the head a bit earlier, but settled onto a smaller one simple to get the balance more correct -- a larger one just looked very heavy.. Thanks though ;) If you peek around at my site you should be able to see bunch more than my work for Splutterfish ;)

Nice character !
I like the hands, and the trouser, wahoooo !
01-16-2002, 08:02 AM
Johan --- you're right, we definetly should try to keep this forum in english. And I might add that to all the brazilians and french artists in it too! ;)
Anyway, I'll continue in english:
Which school did you attend in sweden? If you want you can email me instead of replying in here, I understand that you want to keep this thread focused on your WIP! ;)
As for your character - great apart from the head! ;) I think it would work a little better in a bigger size, but it's hard to tell. Anyway, I hope this critique is constructive, because I like the idea so much! Great job Johan!

epatnor; I got two associates, one in Graphic Design and the other in Advertising Design. No 3d or similar tech oriented education.
Thanks for your comments all ;)
Now I just need to come up with some little weapon and some more stuff ;)

wow That mid-section is coming along real nice. I like how the muscles and definitions are very subtle. One area that bothers me is the armpits. The transition looks wierd but, that just me being piccy. Really nice work and I did check your site(I admit I hadnt been there in awhile):)

02-01-2002, 06:05 AM
ey all, so.. ofcourse I got a bunch of other stuff I had to do before I could revisit this little guy -- but anyway, I sat down today to start to finish this thing up so it at least got some feet, wings and a lil gun
http://www.trinisica.com/img/gallery/in-progress/cgc-pirate_13_p04.jpg (removed link since basically identical is below)
Still wished I'd had some more time before today to add some more detailing to the gun and pants but with the deadline looming about I think this is about it. Sorta look past the crappy lighting at the moment and Ill try to set up a little better quality render shortly..
Whatcha guys think?
textures.. um.. don't think thats going to happen. Not until my reel is done anyway.. ;)
