View Full Version : Scaling a rigged character
jeany 06-04-2008, 03:18 AM Hello,
I've got a rigged FBIK character in Maya which I would like to resize. Is there a way to achieve this? When I tried to scale down the root joint everything looked fine and I was also able to use the IK handles. But as soon as I set a key and go to the next frame: Booom - the character is broken. Some parts stay the same but other party scale up to the characters previous size.
I'd appreciate your help.
Thanks.

Um, the way i have things set up, i have the joint hirarchy in a group, with a scaleConstraint driven from the main control (but it is not parented to it). Then i have the whole control hirarchy group which is parented to that main control. So when you scale the main control, all the controls scale underneath it. And the joints scale because they are in the joint group with that scaleConstraint.
Don't know if that makes sense.

It is all about the hierarchy really. The way we setup our characters while at Sheridan was to have a hierarchy that consisted of a Character Null Group (Top Most Null). Under that there were 3 main groups: BONES, MESHES, CONTROLS, throw in a 4th for deformers if you wish. Then in the controls hierarchy we added a custom attribute on the God or Ground control that was for scale. Obviously you'd want to limit that attribute to minimum of 0. Then you would connect that attribute into the scale of the BONES and CONTROLS group. Don't hook it into the MESHES group or else you'll get double transforms.
Character Null
- MESHES (polymeshes and nurbs surfaces)
- BONES (put your root joint and all other joint hierarchies in here for the character)
- CONTROLS (Nurbs curves used for controlling the movement of character)
I haven't messed around a lot with the full body IK stuff but make sure you test out where you put your IK handles... might need to be in the BONES group or one of its own.
