Hey guys can you all help me find some books that have helped you learn how to model in 3-D Studio Max. I know that there are a lot of books out there, and I'm sure most of them are pretty bad and do not teach you correctly.

For correct tutelage then look no further than the tutorials and help files as well as the manuals that ship with the amazing and robust 3ds max. If, for any reason, these things are missing from your package immediately contact discreet support or your authorized discreet reseller!

Also check out the "Inside" and "Magic" series of books. There are lots of 3rd party books available so have a browse at amazon or your local library. Don't worry about the books being for specific version numbers of max. The theory and most creation methodologies still apply to all iterations of max.

The term "correct" is a tad redundant. There are many ways to go about modeling something in max. Books and other sources will touch on some of the more common ways of doing something but there is no "correct" way.

Another good resource is here at CgTalk and 3D World magazine which usually contains fun tutorials and articles.

Good luck:thumbsup:

Yes Signal to Noise is right, the tutorials that ship with Max are a very good starting point to make your first steps.
And I also can recommend the "Inside" serie.

I personally wouldnt recommend the Inside series just yet, i still clasify myself as a newbie and I have recently bought the Inside 3D Studio Max 4 book, its very confusing stuff even for me and some of the tutorials are a tad complicated for someone starting completely from scratch alot of the techniques could do with alot more expanding on, especially some of the sections on animating. I recommend using the 3D Studio Max manuals (which are very very good), or if you cant then look for a complete beginners book / find some basic tutorials on the web. Then again this is just my opinion and you may well be alright with the Inside book.

However once you feel relatively comfortable creating some basic shapes in 3D Studio Max then the Inside series would be ideal, I think its roughly £40 you can buy them at http://www.amazon.com

By the way how old are you?

Goodluck anyway

I agree with you guys........the manuals and tutorials that come with max are very good and will get you familiar with the program really quickly.

The "Inside 3D Studio Max" books are very good, but you need to know the basics first.

However there is no substitute for creating your own problems and solving them. Make a list of things you want to model and just dive in once you have done the tutorials.

Try using the WIP section of this forum........dont be embarrassed since most guys will laugh with you rather than at you here! We all started somewhere and this site is an amazing source of knowledge and experience.

There are also loads of tutorials out there on the web....just do a search. But I still think the best approach is to do the max tutorials and then just dive in.

I think one of the best books for "beginners" is "Lightning&Rendering" by Jeremy Birns.
There are many books out there, that are software-dependent (e.g. "Modeling with 3ds MAX",...). DON'T buy them. They are mostly like the known tutorials on the web and that isnt worth the price.
