Hey everyone,

I have a question of how to approach something in After Effects. I am wanting to create an animation that has a series of comic book looking images. The transition between images would be the printed dots that make up the comic would lift up and blow away, then reform in the next image. I know this would use some sort of particles, and I am fairly well versed in After Effects and Maya, but I have no delved into particles. Can anyone offer a suggestion of approach - what should I look into to learn how to accomplish this effect?

Thanks for any input

Check www.creativecow.net

They used to have tutorials for text dissoving like sand or smoke and such.

If you do accomplish that - I would love to see it. I have tried something similar in AfterEffects but the effect was never really what I "envisioned" and I ended up using 3D Max for a lot of it. I haven't learned Maya but it seems more and more it has the effects that I want to use. Anyway - would love to see the final product.

I do have a couple questions about this. How do I get my particles to create the initial image? If I can figure this out, I can probably get the rest to work.

I tried using shatter - it gives a look that's good, but the pieces can't be controlled very easily once the original image is shattered.

I did something like this for a sot once. I had to make a clouds form a girl and transition into the actual animated girl singing for a music video. Anyways I approached this differently for my shot but it might work for you. I had particular from trap code use the emit from color or image or something like that. I forget now but it wasnt too hard to figure out, You can also achieve some good effects by pre-comping the file and playing it both forward and in reverse to have the particles forming and whatnot.

Also look at trapcode/redgiants site because I think they developed a new plugin recently called Form. Just look at the demos they ave up it looks interesting as well.

Designate the initial shape as the emitter (Surface mode)? Paint a shaped particle cloud? Create a particle target and designate the new shape as the initial state? There's a million ways to do this in Maya.
