First of all, good luck! Max files are, among all the 3D file formats, particularly susceptible to corruption in this kind of situation. Chances are, you won't be able to recover much; you might not recover anything at all:(
That having been said, I'd recommend trying to merge the file in. Don't merge everything at once, though -- just merge it in object by object, saving the new scene after each successful merge (if any). If you're lucky, you might just be able to recover some stuff. Failing this, I don't know of anything else you can do:hmm:

Hi Webstars,
Have a look into the Auto Back Directory, maybe there is a way out.;)

Lord, I hate it when I get the blue screen of death. Like Ivan said, check your auto back and see if some version of it is there.
Also, are you using Hold while you're working? If not get into the habit of it. That little ditty has saved my butt on more than one occasion. Hold even remembers the last hold after a crash.

Can't help you recover your file, but I'd recommend you turn on "Increment on Save" so you get a new file every time you save. You'll end up with loads of files but recovery will be much easier :)
Also, if you can upgrade to win2000/xp i'm sure you'll be less prone to hard crashes...

Thanks for the replies guys. I've tried them all but to no avail. My autoback files seem to be empty. I guess my works screwed.
Thanks very much for your help anyway.

3DS MAX claims another victim...Way to go DISCREET.. way to go.:buttrock:
I have had that SAME problem so I have to do the autosave and incremental save and all of that. I HATE having to be so paranoid about my files. The only thing I should have to worry about is accidentaly deleting a file or misplacing a file.
Discreet needs to get off their asses and clean this up. There isn't any reason why MAX users should have to be this freakin' anal about their files after payin $4000 when the the "other" guys don't have this big a problem at $1200. .....jerks!:annoyed:

sometimes you can recover most of the contents from a max file by doing a merge into another file, one object at a time...........a good candidate for a script if I ever saw one.
we use Norton Unerase most of the time and it is a real lifesaver for max files and for photoshop
you were lucky getting a bluescreen............most times when max crashes it just goes with no error message at all!

Hi Webstar,
Are you sure that your Auto Back is really empty?
Did you click on ‘All files’ in the menu? There have to be your ‘maxBack’ and ‘Maxhold’ files there.
By default Max show ‘Max files’ and there is usually nothing.
So click on the arrow and find ‘All files’, you will find something there believe me.
