I am building a kata rig in C4D. Since martial arts uses a constrained circle of attack and defense I have constrain the wrist goals to an arc constrained to the shoulders position. The arc can be scaled in towards the body or out to it 100% scale to meet the arc of the wrist goals distance from the shoulder. The arc then is tilted, rotated and scaled and the goal is positioned along the spline. If I wish to strike something I tilt, scale and rotate the arc to pass through the object and then keyframe. The arc then adds a natural strike sweep to the motion as opposed to straight FK or IK. I will be setting up block and kick splines so the foot can travel in the eccentric arc and angles of a real kick (knee up then rotate the foot to strike point after knee position is achieved for front kick... different eccentricities for side and reverse kick as well as roundhouse and mulekick) and the hands and forearms can use rotational movements of the elbow via the shoulder roll to sweep rotate any object entering the defensive box directly in front of the chest.

One can also rig an opponent and determine collision detection and predetermine possible positions of opponents strike by calculating the vector and have the arc tilt and rotate and the spline position to block automatically.

Thx Randy!

awesome piece of know how! thx 4 that..

I'm pretty much doing the same type of rig.. setup for the 'kata' fight style.. I have to accomodate bare hand and the use of single hand and double hand weapons from swords to staffs..

I've tested out a system of spline circles around the world co-ords... one for vertical axial rotation and the other for the horizontal.. with the vertical parented under the horizontal rotator.. with a target for the IK to track..

ur setup sounds more comprehensive and adaptable.. as far as achieving realistic arcs of attack etc.. intriguing mate! i'll see if I can translate ur reply into a test rig!

thx for the primo info...

Jamie

edit:

Brilliant.. just setup and tested..
Sometimes the easiest solutions get overlooked! I shouldve figured this one out earlier..
works better than i imagined! kudos to ya!

I am working on the face controls and then I will post a tutorial that should be applicable across 3D apps. Can't have a good kata without a "gig face"!

I would like to see your results when you get it done.

Best Regards
Randy
