View Full Version : David Stein Ferguson's Life Drawing Work
FreeWingStudios 06-02-2008, 04:50 AM Hello to all,
My name is David Stein Ferguson and I coordinate an open forum short pose life drawing program for the Austin Visual Arts Association (http://www.avaaonline.org/), which means that I never miss a session. I have built up a large collection of life drawings as a result and I would like to share my humble efforts with you. I am self taught and always looking for ways to improve and so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am also hoping someone on this forum can direct me to a place where I can post nudes. I am currently using photobucket but I have heard they have a very strict policy about no nude life drawings. It is kind of hard to share life drawing work if you cant post nudes and I would greatly appreciate your insights on this matter
Thank you,
David Stein Ferguson

Hi David!! Welcome to the club!...great start! Eager to see more of your work! You might want to try imageshack.us ..they don't have much of a problem with nudes.

Thank you both for the kind words and the helpful information. I will get over to imageshack.us and get started.

You might also consider getting a hosting package somewhere. Generally, those servers will load the images in your visitor's browser faster and you won't be bothered with popups/adds at a pretty low anual cost (I pay 15€ per year or so for 100MB)

Hello again,
Here is todays post. This one is a speed paint of a character from one of my D&D campaigns, he is a mad druid. It was painted directly in Painter 9.5 with my Intuis 3. No references.

Hi
I posted a reply on your speed painting a few posts back but then I got the "server too busy" page and I didn't have the chance to re-post it before today so here goes the shorter version :)
I think the hair needs more highlights and more shadows
The forehead could use more highlights as well.
For painting hair, I strongly recommend experimenting with custom brushes.
There is a thread in the tutorials section by Cris Palomino (who is still being missed at the forums  ) in which she explains how to create your own custom brushes in Painter.
Great to see another Painter user on the forums btw :)

My father was a working class hero and a private contractor who did all the hardest jobs. He taught me the meaning of hard work by having me work with him painting houses and fixing roofs through the hot summers of my youth in San Antonio Texas. One day he got bit on the ankle by a brown recluse spider. The wound never healed and became infected with M.R.S.A. through the hospitals. After seven years of battling a terrible infection that ate his leg up to his knee, he began to have horrifying hallucinations and was hospitalized with a severe case of sepsis. After two weeks he was released from the hospital and the Doctors all said he was fine. Three days later he was was found dead at the age of 56. The next day I got a call from the sheriff informing me of my fathers untimely demise. Later that night I painted this image. I was in shock and did not shed a tear until I got about half way through it, and then the tears began to flow freely down my face. Rest in peace Gene Raymond Ferguson.
in loving memory,
David Stein Ferguson

Hello,
It has been a while since my last post. I have been swamped working 12 plus hours a day on a massive web design project. I have however continued to put in 6 to 9 hours a week in life drawing and I have finally found some time to begin posting some work in my sketchbook again so here goes. Here are a few digital life drawings done in Painter. They are all speed paints done in the short pose life drawing program that I coordinate at the A.V.A.A. If you are in Austin, come draw with us Sundays and Mondays at the Austin Visual Arts Association.

Great work!
Perhaps you could change your brush setting to have it's size vary according to the pressure you use? This way you can add volume to the forms by varying the lineweight. Your lines are too thick and equal in thickness, which flatten your figures.
Also, try to widen the range of values used. Lighter highlights and darker shadows will add a lot of volume.
Hope this helps!

Here are a few more 30 minute charcoal portraits that I did in life drawing. I love the challenge presented by the endless variety of the human face and so I do a lot of these. I will post more soon.
