Hey James,

Name is steve , barren is title heh.

Heres the original plate I started from.

I painting extra mountain formations, replaced sky and lighting, added more foliage and water. Did some photomanipulation for the Mg and FG elements. Painting joining elements and the lighting on the rocks to match the scene.

Hey Steve, I really quite like your piece, you have some beautiful tones and colours going on here and I enjoy the values and the layout of your landscape. textures look good, too.

BUT

you seem to have two suns. I do not quite understand that...the centre hole in the clouds reveals a bright cloud with such an overexposure as it only occurs in front of the sun. There also seems to be a fair share of blue in the sky...and then on the lower right you have this strong red sky with the setting sun.
The lighting in itself looks coherent though, and I've seen some very rapid gradients from blue to red on evening skys, but that I think might be a tad too strong. Perhaps you wanted to set your scene on another planet, but then the landscape looks fairly earthly :D

Also I think you should have your river take at least one more turn before it vanishes between the mountains, as otherwise you get this very pointy triangle going between mountain and river. The turns will help create even more depth, too.

One more thing...I think the very forground rock needs some touch-ups. Its right side and texture look great, but the left side of it to me looks like some rather distant rocks. That might be just me, but it confuses me a little. Perhaps what I see is already the midground, but then perhaps cast a few weak highlights from the sun onto the rock to seperate it a little, otherwise it feels like the rock sort of morphs into the midground.

But those are really tiny things, I must say I really enjoy your piece, it has a nice warm feeling to it, and I'd love to explore that landscape!

Hey Dan,

Thanks for that input. The sky I will try and fix. It is one sun, but I can see where it may look opposite. In my sketch layout, i had the sun to the right and a break of clouds to the left showing some brightness pass through, I thought i accomplished that but maybe its jjust a little to overdone like you said. The river and I was a never ending process because I really didn't know quite what I was looking for. Went thru a few paths til I ended up with the one in the painting. I'm going to see if I can add another turn in there but dude to the perspective it may be hard to see. For that rock, I made it so it connected to the rock in front of it, creating some what of a "L" shape. I think maybe you may have thought it was a seperate FG object? :)

Thanks for the words mate. When i get some time I will toy with this a bit more.

You are welcome! I guess the reason why it looked like a second sun to me is that this area of overexposure is almost circular....I don't mind overexposure per se, though, as that is how cameras react.
And yeah, I think I see what you mean with the rock. It is still a little confusing to me, but I think I know what you were after. :)
