Heres another link in case the image doesnt show up.

looks pretty nice l.a. akira....
the only thing i'd comment on are the following:
1. the camera's focal length feels a little off
2. there seems to be a little texture stretching around the neck area...
3. and maybe a little darkness is needed around the hair line forehead area....
got a wire shot?
but damn dude...that is nice!!!
keep it up!

nice work but damm l ahte when people use photo of her face to get a nice texturing at leats u can paint over the real photo to get a nice texturing and that will look no more like a a photo map on a 3d face.................

trust me, there was quite a bit of repainting involved. I wish it were as easy as just taking a picture and pasting in onto the model.

wow, good work. But, heh there is something weird about his nose....like it would explode or something, he drinks alot doesn't he? :D :scream:
looks great so far the only probelem is that the hair seesm to be coming out in clumps and doesn't seem to add a shadow to the forehead much

Fantastic, very realistic....an other BG and better texture for the shirt, and it is a real masterpiece

05-20-2003, 10:19 PM
The mesh is clean, the facial expression are great, but honnestly, I don't think it deserve a front page YET. The skin shader needs more work and the current rendering is a bit emotionless.
Just my 2 cents

Nice mesh, and good texturing, very realistic except for the terrible hair on the model. I would scrap it and start over. other than the hair it looks great.

yep lm like Joebount l think that dont deserve a front page yet........l think some LW user are too coll on other LW user
hope u know what l m talking about.............and l know its hard to fix a real photo to wrap perfectl a face......but wee can say all the time which guy or girls have taken real texture for skin and for me that look so fake that kind of method.......

holy macaroni! I'd swear this is a photo. Only crit is the hair: though the hair is great, it doesn't connect nicely to the head.

Wow.
I think it looks great. Better than a lot of stuff that has made it to the front page before.
Nobody said it had to be perfect to make the front, just impressive.
Maybe the skin, compositing and hair needs a little work, but at least this model HAS hair.
Somebody had the guts to attempt the hair and not post another boring, semi-realistic bald model. Groan...how many of those kinds of models do we have to endure....
My 2 cents

I agree with Slurry. I think it's total frong page material. I don't see anything wrong with the hair either.

great looking model. i really like the texturing on the face.
my only crit is... it looks lifeless. i dont feel anything from it. visually its great. but it dont hit me with "what is he looking at, why is does he have that expression"

thanks for the comments guys... :)
shouldnt be too much longer for the the next render. this one should have a little more life to it.
here is some info on the image:
modelling the face took me about 6-8 hours. modelling the expressions and extra stuff, brows, shirt, etc. took about 2 days.
lighting was an HDR map, one area light, a point light for the ear and two bounce cards with a 2x monte carlo for the overall scene. The luminosity on the shirt is also about 300%.
as for the skin, I started with photos, mapped them onto a uv and painted over it all.
E=mc: There are some wires up on the first page :)

leigh
05-21-2003, 05:21 AM
That's really great work
Such a clean model, and skillful use of photographs in your textures (yep, they can be quite a bitch to match to your UV map) :)
My main crit is that I think in places the skin looks a little flakey. Maybe that is intentional - in some areas, especially the tip of the nose and the upper lip on his left side, the bump map looks really rough and peely, as if the skin is flaking off.
A suggestion for the eyes: I think that the gloss amount could be a little higher. Right now the spec is causing the highlights on the eyes to be a little too soft. Also, you might want to increase the reflectivity on the eyes - since eyeballs are covered in liquid, they can be really reflective. Try adding some gradients to your reflection channel to create reflection using the Fresnel effect ;)
And a suggestion for the hair (since a lot of people are complaining about it) - why not make the hair a little glossier? The clumps are cool, but would suggest that his hair has been stlyed that way using gel or hair wax, and that would cause his hair to appear slightly wet ;)
Did you use any special shaders for the skin, btw? Or purely image mapping?
:applause:

05-21-2003, 05:39 AM
Thanks for the comments, everyone.
Derelict: i'm gerald, not zaondude. :)
Leigh:The hair was giving me a real tough time and in the end i'm still not happy with it. Oh well. :P No SSS or other shaders, just image maps and monte carlo.
leigh
05-21-2003, 05:42 AM
You mentioned that you had lights at the ears - was that to create that almost SSS look on the ear skin, by using a bit of translucency there?
If so, that's a cunning idea
l-a-akira
05-21-2003, 05:47 AM
yep..that was the idea :)
seems that getting most SSS shaders and HDR images to work together in LW is more trouble than its worth so I just opted for the ear light and faked the rest as much as I could.

Very nice so far.
My main crit is the nose. As leigh pointed out there's that bump that's wrong. A nose mostly has holes in it not bumps but I think that the main thing about it is the modeling... Your much too flat under it. You need a better continuity with the face. You have a 90 degree cut going on where the lower part of the nose meets the face. Understand what I mean?
The ear is pretty nice but the upper part is too perfect... you need some lumps in the modeling and a little more roundness on top.
There's also a little polygon feel to the eyes I think it commes from the eye lashes as if they were following the non-subdivided version of your poly head. The hair strands are too thick I think that is partly why people bug on them. I think you need to double the amount of hair while making it half the with.
Hope I don't sound too harsh...
Great job soo far. Doing a realistic head is one of the most difficult thing to do because it is what we see the most in a day and we are used to analising it.
Sorry if there's any miss spelled or crappy sentenses, I'm french... ;)

your model is astonihing and the geometry is also damb clean, great job, when you do your facial expressions do you look at a ref image making the face or do you just shoot from the hip, also is the textureing on the model from the ref image it self? ..

Great shot!
Just as a suggestion for the hair - I recently read a tutorial in the Japanese "Lightwave Bible" which seemed to suggest adding a layer of short Sasquatch fur onto the scalp to break up the clumping effect you get with Sasquatch long hair....maybe that will help? Never tried it myself though.

But his t-shirt is to self-illuminative and the part where his hair stops (on the forehead) looks a bit odd..
Other than that GREAT!! :drumrock:

I love it!
Don't mean to add to the sound of the broken record but the hair IS the only flaw worth speaking of. I feel like I'm looking at a bad hair transplant job or something. While some hairs that are further down the surface of his forehead may work, I would concentrate them mor toward the center of his hairline and mot so many along the rest of it. My only other crit would be the lifeless expression in his eyes, but I have a feeling I will be seeing a much improved expression in your next render.
Good luck animating this piece, you've reached a very high level of realism in the model and textures and it will be challenging to keep it at the same level while animating. I know if I were you I'd be getting all antsy to animate him but I stress to you the importance of TAKING YOUR TIME on the morph targets and make sure you can animate those very subtle eye movements that we have all as human beings dont pay to much attention to, unless they aren't there.
Keep up the good work man!
DEFINITELY front page stuff :applause: skin shading works really well.
The only thing (apart from the hair roots) that strikes me is the compositing - he doesn't quite 'connect' with the background. The focal lengths/scale somehow look odd and the bkgd greens are saturated enough that there should be some color bleed - yet he seems to be reflecting a pale sky blue.
Sorry to moan about trivia, coz it really is an impressive piece of work:thumbsup: the morph shapes look real good too - I'd love to see an animation
WOW! yeah great work, excelent modeling, texturing, lighting and composing, only the front hair looks stranger, but really men, excelent render! :applause:

Why on earth do people have this thing that it's ok to use photos or elements of photos to map objects but not ok to do exactly the same with characters.. baffles me.
