Hi All,
Iv come across a big problem, For seamingly no reason at all, Windows brought up this error message, (Windows is unable to read some files from servicepack3, please insert disk and reinstall servicepack3).
I didn't have the disk on hand, so I just Uninstalled servicepack3 and carried on as usual to find the Lightwave errored and would not start up, I reinstalled Lightwave, that wen't fine, and installed the 7.5 update and found that it would work for a short while and then for no reason would error on startup, Iv already downloaded the 7.5 update again to rule out the patch being the problem.
Iconpacker also works for a short while and then errors on startup.
Iv even gone to the point of reformating & reinstalling the OS, directx8, graphicscard drivers aswell as installing servicepack2 and come up against the same problem.
Funny thing is it seems to be only Lightwave and Iconpacker that is giving me a hard time.
The rest of my apps seem to be fine, well so far any way.
I am also getting an error now and again when shutting down my PC, which never use to happen.

My version of win2K in an upgrade from an NT disk, the first time I installed win2K on my new harddrive halfway through the installation prosses I am asked to insert the NT disk and then after it does its thing, I reinsert the win2K disk, Now when I want to reinstall win2K including formating of the drive, Im not asked to put in the NT disk, win2K will just install.
So how can I get my hard drive absolutly wiped to the point were Im asked to insert the NT disk half way through the OS insallation prosses, like when the drive was new.

Thanks PC Gurus.

ah, sounds like u have a classic case of upgrade trauma..... =T

Anyhow, I get those whenever I try upgrading to an OS like Win9x to Win2K/XP and try to do a service pack update.... Idealy speaking, this shouldn't be the case. It most likely isn't. I think we both just get bad luck that way or something ...

Anyh0w, most likely the install or rather the download of the service pack got botched somewhere and it either downloaded a bad file or the download got corrupted midway or when it was doing the update, there was a write error that messed up some of your files.

By this point, I usually give up and format. You can try to isolate the files and recopy them manually, but that usually causes more harm than good, though a good TEMPORARY fix.

Anyh0w, that's my two cents.

Well I think it is the service pack3 myself....cause it seems that there is something in service pack3 that my 2d/3d apps don't like...service pack 3 crashed my comp....I feel that service pack 2 was and dtill is the best service pack for win2k

2d/3d apps like photoshop7 and imageready and 3dstudio max5 and macromedia programs like flash 5, director 8, fireworks

also I heard (rumors) that service pack 3 has some kind of spyware in there and if there is anything in your OS that it doesn't like it causes a system failure.....But like I said that is what I heard....

try service pack 2 to see if that helps...if not try reinstalling your OS then reinstalling service pack 3...if that error still comes up then use service pack 2....I'm currently using sp2 and found no reason to try sp3 again...might try sp4 if it comes out or if there will ever be a sp4....good luck
