View Full Version : How to make lasers?
Hello everyone. Let me preface this by saying I don't know much about lighting in maya. That said, I was wondering if any of you knew an easy way to make laser beams in maya. I am in the process of creating a short film where a robber breaks into a house that is filled with red motion detectors and would love to know how to make them look real. Right now I am currently just using red cylinders. If any of you could help explain how I might be able to do this, or know of any tutorials that would be great.
Thanks in advance!

I think you're on the right track... just add a red surface shader and either add a red glow on the shader or add the glow in comp.
How would I go about making and applying a surface shader?

Open the hypershade, under "Create Maya Nodes" there's a surface shader. In the attribute editor, change the out color to red, change the glow color to a bit darker red, and assign the shader to your cylinders.
