hi there
I am interested in learning more about these type of effects in maya.

Have a look at this video on AREA to see what I mean(the part I am talking about is when they use the CURTAIN WALL GROW.

Can anyone tell how I could go about doing this type of stuff in MAya?

If your talking about the Curtain wall effect at the end I would consider using either partilce (instance) goals of softbodies with goals.
