Hello there everyone.

I've started doing the portrait of a character of a RPG Campaign I'm in, Silverbells. My past few projects/jobs however were all 3D and backgrounds, buildings and props, so not only I'm a bit rusty with 2D, but I'm also rusty with characters.

Anyway some few months ago I drew her first concept art:

About the drawing and the character: I used Intuos 3 with Photoshop, and an asian model as reference. Her design reflects her personality: She is insane and with attention disorder, both which are reflected in her clothes/armor (almost complete assymetry, etc). One obvious source of inspiration to me when designing her was Final Fantasy characters, with all the pointless props/belts. Her sword has no weight whatsoever, and she is a psionic.

So, some months passed by and I decided to do another artwork of her, a bit more complete this time. I've been having a lot of challenge however setting up her pose, and would appreciate some help.

This is the current sketch:

And with some color:

The references I used so far were Madonna (http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/9949/madonnablackandwhiteqv7.jpg), Rikku (Final Fantasy X) (http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4112/rikkuzy7.jpg), Mana (Japanese designer/guitarist) (http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4136/manasamawhitebluevioletcp6.jpg), Gothic Lolitas overall (http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5038/lolitalayoutem1.jpg), and this wig (http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1884/smiffcindywigauburnrn6.jpg).

Before I go ahead and start cleaning up the image I'd love to hear your opinion on how to improve it. I know the proportion and pose is far from being right, but being so rusty at this point I'm not entirely sure on how to improve it. I'll appreciate C&C.

Thank you very much

Those two images look pretty different. The second one is much better, which makes me assume that either you have gotten better over the months, or that you craw better faces with an angle than faces on a frontal pose. Now, if you still draw like in the first image you need to practice drawing faces. The features are like just put in there without any real structure. The second image looks way better, but still draw a basic head and face structure before drawing the features on it.

Anyways, I like your concept and IŽd like to see a full body shot instead. Oh, the right eye seems a bit weird on the second image, fix that and it'll be much better...

Hey, thanks. The first drawing was VERY experimental - I was trying different styles, and ended up with white and lower details on the character to cause a high contrast with her clothes.

I did a bit of fixing in the eyes and some cleanup:

This is much nicer. Work no the nose, the right nostril doesn't match the angle of the face... the right eye is almost there, maybe just another twicht on it. The left eye is good but it's left tip (that's to your left) it's a bit up. Maybe you're going to define the lips when painting, but be careful when doing it...

Thanks a lot for your C&C so far. It's been really helpful.

Here's another update. The smile gave me a LOT of trouble so far.

almost there, the left part of the lower lip looks weird... just a little twitch there... Also, I like the expression but it seems like she's sleepy...
