View Full Version : Turn off AA Filters?
TSchmiesing 05-29-2008, 10:30 PM I have a question for the advanced Mental Ray users. Is it possible to turn off the Sampling Filter completely? I know it is not possible in the drop down filter area, but I was not sure if there is a way to modify any of the 'mi' files to turn off the Filter. I ask this based on my experience with Vray. I had the option to not use a Filter. This increased my rendering time dramatically, and in some ways provided a nicer looking still image. I could control the AA through sampling. Filters were still required for animation.

You have a 'little' misunderstanding. The AA filter just filters the results it gets from the rays cast - so you have the hard lanczos look, the softer triangle look, etc. In all situations, the renderer casts rays, it's just a matter of how the results are processed. If you want an alternative to the sampling algorhitm, turn on the 'fast rasterizer' and crank up the samples.

And I think he is asking how to disable filtering to get "raw" result. I'd like to know as well if this is possible in MR.

It would be interesting if you clarify what do you mean by the raw result.

You're both spot on here - chg is describing where in vray you can use oversampling to get nicer results but turn off the anti aliasing filter / look to get the rendered result without any processing being applied to the edges (lanczos / catmull etc). The filter itself puts a bit of a hit on render times, not much but still a little bit that may add up on a long sequence or high res image.
Unfortunately I don't use mr so I can't help, but just to clarify what you're both thinking is what he's asking ;)
