Kinematics

Well, i am a real newbie to maya but i roughly know the ins and outs on the surface (the depth of maya is far more then i can swollow). Before this i was formally using Cinema4d.

In cinema4d the Ep or Cv tools seemed real accurate and it felt alot like illustrator and it was really easy to get the straight followed by sudden sharp bends.

In maya, this doesnt seem to happen or atleast its really hard. Ive tried snapping to grids and also adding more pts but if i was doing something technical i couldnt...Because during the bend i would snap one pt to the grid , 1 or 2 in the center followed by another snap to grid to finish the bend.

It works but what if i required all 4 sides equal or somewhat like that? In maya i really can spend hours just trying to get something so simple right. Can anyone provide help?

Thanks in advance

hey lance, i would just use the channel box if you need to get extremly accurate. you can also click on like per vertices in maya using the channel box. if you want to average things there are scripts that will do that for you. sorry i cant be of more help ciao.

The curve tools take a bit of getting used too. Eventually they will do what you want. Many people who need to work more quickly and intuitively use Adobe Illustrator to create curves which import easily into Maya.

Using the menus at the top within the modeling context, choose create > either ep or cv curve and hit the little option box next to the choice.
One of the options in there is curve degree. Play with that first. Some make angles, some make curves. Never the tween shal meet.

However, while you are creating a 3rd degree curve, and you are snapping to a grid, click 3 or 4 times at the exact same coords and notice that as you add edit pts there, you begin to loose tangency and can soon create a corner. So, In short thats how people create a 3rd degree curve with a corner. You can't mix curve degrees within a curve operation. Also, you can create 2 seperate curves of different degrees and snap them together and use them as one.

Last note. Keep in mind that nothing in this world has a corner without some bit of curvature in it. Even the tightest corner has this. You need that highlight for realismification.

Me soo tired.
Hope this makes sense.
