Maybe you should try a whole system formatt. I just did it last weekend. it only took my a few hours to formatt, reinstall os, reinstall all of my programs. and it feels really good haveing a nice fresh system on your hands. this is just what I recommend. just make 500% sure that all of your things that you need is backed up.

I'm running it on win2k and have been since beta.....no probs I'd check the install or the system. I dont think 5 is conflicting with the OS.

BTW The fresh install is a clean way to redo things every 6 months or each year....more often if your dinkin with the system all the time... :)
I used to dink with it,

but either way its just a fresh start if you cant clean things up. there are other options in cleaning the system but I wont type all of that out sorry. You must check the web "Grasshopper"

Good luck

used it on xp and 2k and no probs. it crashes a bit more than i'd like on 2k when preview rendering for some reason but no problems shutting down at all. and task manager always pops up just fine.

maya almost never crashes for me. im running XP and the only time i ever have a problem is when I am running some other application that is using all of my processor power. it crashes every once in a while but i guess that is expected.

your lucky. there is this one guy that whenever he opens maya the whole bottom half is all screwed up just a bunch of noise and stuff. and this wasnt just for the views. it was doing with the whole app. what a poor soul. dont know if he got it fixed.

I might be going out on a twig here but maybe it has something to do with your hardware. or even another app that is stealling something that maya needs. just a suggestion

Hes running 2k right ? Did I read this wrong?
Anyways it doesnt sound like an operating system issue s olets forget that part.

Around the Fur:
Have you reinstalled maya yet? If its still doing this let us know and list your system info. If this were a display issue like Maya Ayanami mentioned he'd heard of I would say for your particular video card what may be the prob. Driver, resolution, optimization with apps or something. For this though it seems to be just an internal operation problem. a reinstall should clear it up.

Should you have trouble getting it to completely unistall. I can help walking you through the regedit to get it out before reinstalling.

Good luck. Please let us know how it goes..

I have the same problem too (Win 2K v4.5 and v5) and I know there are one or two others out there. Some of us have traced the problem to mental ray - it only seems to happen after doing some work with MR (ie more than just a couple of little renders). Maybe unloading the MR plugin just before exiting might work? I doubt it though....
