View Full Version : Artifacts in AB octane shader
Luthor69 05-28-2008, 03:38 PM Hi!
Im trying to render out some smoke with the octane shader in afterburner. Im working in Max 2008 and scanline. I continue to get those black artifacts. I've been trying to tweak it but I cant seem to get rid of it. I guess it has something to do with the shadowmap since the artifact dissapear whem I untick selfshadows. Im using AB Shadowmap on the targetspot in the scene. Anyone who has had the same problem or even has a solution to the problem?
Best regards /Pärhttp://web-3.crystone.se/xtrm.se/bilder/galleri/484/21198493181661100_smoke.jpg

I have the same problem. I posted it at the developers forum a month ago and have not gotten a response. So either they are working on it as it may be apart of another related issue, they just haven't gotten to it yet, or just too busy updating to max2009, I don't know.
The only solution I have found, which isn't a good one as far as speed is concerned, is to use raymarcher instead. Personnally I like the octane shader but it seems a little useless in AB4.

In another thread on that forum Kresimir mentioned he knew about the bug (with the little dots) and is working on it... though i'm sure it'll be a while before we get the update.

I revisited the error scene I had and started working through what could be wrong.
There is a way to get rid of the large black artifacting.
It seems the it is related to the AB shadow map size, using a value of 255 or less removes the artifacting. Anything 256 or greater in the map size will give the large black artifacts.
So it doesn't really "fix" the issue but does bring back usability to the Octane shader.
It does not get rid of the small black dots I believe that is a different issue entirely.
