Automap or planar on same selected faces?

I can't figure out if its better to have uvs that are nice and sraight but result in some distortion in different views or uvs that work alright for every view?

cheers

First thing I ask myself when making UVs is how is the surface going to be used? If it is for a still shot, then I can be less particular... some sides of the object aren't going to be seen, or can be hidden behind other things or by lighting. If for an animation, what will the camera see? How fast will the camera be moving (motion blur can hide a wealth of sins)? How far away will the camera be? Is this for an interactive real-time 3D asset, where the user can examine it from all sides?

The second option you've shown is mirrored. Otherwise I don't really see much difference. Totally depends on how the surface is going to be seen.

thanks for replying. That's a good point about questioning how the model will be used. One thing I did was apply an actual photo to it and guaged how it looked in different views (was it to distorted?, etc). From different views the auto map looked the best.
