View Full Version : I tell you this cinema 4d is getting on my nerves
StuDogg 05-28-2008, 08:36 AM I am still trying to get two objects to react with each other. i have gone right back to just working with basic objects but i just cant figure it out. does any one know of any tutorials out there that just do the basics of object collisions.

If you could describe what you want to do with a bit more detail, I'm sure there are several solutions.
Generally, you can use rigid body dynamics with the Dynamics module, or cloth collisions (which can be made very stiff if needed) with the Mocca module, or particle collisions using Thinking Particles, or roll your own solution using Xpresso collision events.

In the end i want to animate logos and text to begin with. for example i want to start with a block of text which is smashed apart by a logo flying in. pretty simple stuff but i think that if i can figure this out i can go on a bit further.

so if i apply rigid body to 2 objects say a ball and a plane. when i animate the ball to move though the plane should they collide or am i missing something?

not being rude but the thing you are 'missing' is the manual.
if you need to use rigid body dynamics to sim the collision then you actually need to sit down, read the manual and then play around with very simple set-ups so you can get a handle on what works and what doesn't work with rigid bodies (for instance there are several documented gotchas dealing with normals and the like that can cause a failed sim if you don't know about them).
there are several tutorials that come with the dynamics module that walk you through the kind of thing you are talking about.
from the slight description you have given it seems more likely you would be better off using a non-simmed method of animating your logo such as using particles. however even then this is not a press a button away you go type thing. you will need to crack open the manual and have a play.
cheers, simon w.
Check my website (http://www.bonkers.de/forums/forums.html), i created a simple example using the TP Presets.
Dynamics is not the best alternative since it does not allow for fragmentation, TP or Cloth are of more use here. Alternatively use the Explosion FX deformer.

thanks for the help guys. and your right i am missing the manual but i inhered the mac of someone else who has since gotten rid of most of the useful information as he thought it wasn't of any use.

Most C4D manuals can be found here:

So maybe you should have named your posting "I need help, because I don't have any manuals", instead of "I tell you this cinema 4d is getting on my nerves". It's not CINEMA's fault that you don't have any documentation.
Cheers,
Jack

well i am very sorry. it was not really meant to be taken as a stab at Cinema 4d more of a joke really. Nor did i really want people to just have a stab at my ineptitude or lack of knowledge. but thanks for he help anyway.

Thanks for that i will go and get stuck in to them.

So was C4D "included" in this Mac or what?

Well its the companies computer. The person who used to work here used Cinema 4d quite a lot. I have only just started messing around with it in the past year or so. Why do you ask?

I imagine ThirdEye asks because when you turn up asking for stuff that we know comes with a legitimate copy of the application, the suspicion is that you are running a pirated copy. On sites like this that sort of thing is not well tolerated.
And what kind of company allows an employee to dispose of application resources they presumably have paid good money for? Has the former employee made off with the company's property?

Well i can assure you that the copy is a legitimate one and i dont really appreciate being branded a thief. Next time i will keep my questions to myself i am sorry for being any trouble to you all.

CG Talk has zero tolerance regarding warez users and your posting did indicate that you don't have what comes with a legit version. It's better to clear things up than getting banned.

How do i go about clearing things up?
You already have told in a later posting why the situation occured and i doubt you would have contacted me as a MAXON employee personaly via mail if you were using warez ;)

i think you did that, people usually run away when they legitimacy is questioned or ignore the question, the most an admin can do is ask if your copy is the real deal, i don't think anyone will ask for a serial number or anything like that

My interpretation of this:
Dave works at the company
Dave gets fired
Bob gets hired
Bob gets Dave's computer
And to your question, what sort of level are you at with the software? By this I mean, do you know how to animate objects moving, tumbling and so on, or are you hoping for an automatic "make this collide and look cool" button?
If youre new to 3d / c4d then start off just hand animating things moving and try it this way. If your first instinct is to try animating with a physics engine then forget about it, get the basics done first else youll just keep frustrating yourself.

i was kind of hope for a make this collide look cool button as i work on motion a lot and that works like that. i can animate my objects fine. and i know now how to use deformers and i have been trying to use cloth. It just seemed in my head that i when i put rigid object tags in. object would then become solid and therefore interact with other objects. guess i am on the wrong road really.
Not realy a wrong road, but a rocky ride ;)
Dynamics is older than most other parts of CINEMA 4D. It needs some doing that you are not used to with more modern tools like cloth.
Dynamics requires you to have all rigid and softbodies as children of a common solver so they can interact. Get the online documentation from the MAXON website, install it and have a read.

StuDog, I did not brand you a thief, but merely tried to suggest why another poster might ask such a question. If I questioned anyone's propriety it was that of the former employee.
As others have pointed out there are ways to clear these things up and I hope that you or your company have got this sorted out. It would also have been useful, and perhaps enligthening if you were to indicate which release of C4D you have 'inherited'. I presume it's not the current release.
But enough. I'll let this thread settle back to being 'on-topic'.
