hey folks,

a character i have been working on for a while. i've reached a point where i'm kinda sick of working on her, so i figured i'd stop, render out a nice shot or two and see what people thought up to this point. i've limited it to a face shot since the body is still sorta WIP, but since i consider the face and its textures finished i figured it would fit into the 'finished work' category :)

she's still bald as i've not decided how i want to deal with the hair yet (hoping shave and a haircut for max will come out soon, so i can use that). the model is based off of a real person, who is fairly pale, which accounts for the pretty light skin.

anyhow, any crits, suggestions, questions are welcomed

Really lovely. She remindes me of someone I know. She has a wonderful understated beauty, and I especially like the small skin detail around the eyes. Speaking of eyes, those are looking great. Although to me they almost look like glass as opposed to flesh. I really enjoy the way you've sculpted her lips and the light freckles across her nose are adorable. A decidedly great job. Could we see some other angles? I can't see her ears well and I can't tell if I like 'em or not. Excellent work. I'd love to see her finished.

heyya venge, thanks for the feedback! :D

yeah someone in the irc channel said the ears look a bit flat, and now that i've gone back and looked at em a bit i think they do need some more work. here is a close up on the lit side, and you can see how some of the edges seem a little sharp...oh well, i'll try and work on it a bit here soon :)

Looking really good, she looks a bit like the Australian actress off Six Feet Under.

The only tiny probs I can see at the mo. is that her septum seems a bit too low in relation to the outside edge of her nostrils, and the neck lacks detail but that's fair enough if you are concentrating on the face right now.

Actually, those aren't bad ears capn panic. The helix of the ear looks good and the lobe looks good. It's the antihelix that bothers me. Since we're talking about the ear- Usually, the antihelix splits at the top of the ear. This creates the overall shape of a curved Y. The top branch of the Y is more distal to the head than the lower branch. The only thing I'd say is that your antihelix needs to split. Maybe your reference model doesn't have a split. I highly doubt it. (i'd like to see the ear pic if she doesn't though) Don't be discouraged. I would put the ear in the top ten hardest body structures to model.

The nose would be number one....
I think Bliz made some good observations. Double check the septum, nostrils, and underlying nose cartilage. Especially for the nose cartilage, you need a sort of X-ray vision to guess the underlying cartilage form. If you get that right, then its just a matter of adding a little more softness here and there. The nose often has subtle sharpness and softness. For me it is the hardest structure to model. I also think it is the most neglected part of the face in CG modeling.

The neck is too soft. It's true that the neck is fundamentally cylindrical, but you need more detail forms built on top of it. Even in soft women the sternocleidomastoid is visible. There should be a neck column present as well. Women have an adam's apple. It's just not as developed as in men.

I second Venge's request for more angles.

The lips and the eyes look spectacular. You even took the time to place the pink tissue on the inner eye. Nice.

The eyelashes look like a keeper too. What did u use for ur eyelashes?

I still love your mini-cooper work. One of these days I'm going to make it to a KCAGA meeting....

I know I deal out heavy critiques, but I only want the best for you and your art. Keep up the good work.

hey guys,

yeah i agree the neck could use a bit of work. although i disagree about the nose, i think its just about right, with the exception of perhaps a little groove that needs to be added on the bottom of the septum. but i think thats just because of the reference models nose shape is a bit out of the ordinary.

the reference images i have been working from:

artistx: yeah going back and looking at the reference pics of the ear, it does seem to be missing that upper split, good call there :)

the eyelashes are just curved surfaces with eyelashes mapped onto them, and i still think the bottom lashes are too dark and the upper ones are not dark enough, but that is just based on me trying to match the reference.

I know I deal out heavy critiques, but I only want the best for you and your art. Keep up the good work.

i would much rather have it this way then a string of 20 posts saying "looks great" as its the only way to improve and learn

i'll try to render out a few more angles tomorrow.

artistx: btw, next KCAGA meeting is on wednesday, the 21st. at that library at shawnee mission pkwy and I-35, you should wonder on over if u are nearby :D

I was looking at the reference photos. You can see the sternomastoid at the bottom of the neck in the top right one. In the bottom right one you can really see it split at the base of the neck (like an upside down Y) because her head is slightly turned. (cute girl by the way) The face reminds me of a Western Civilization teacher I had at KU who moved on to cosmetics.

I'm sorry, but I won't be able to make it to the meeting coming up. I wish I could. I'm currently in Savannah, GA. The one time I was able to go to a meeting was during Christmas. I wanted to meet you so I could leech some tips off of you. :) They said you were out of town or something... Atleast I am on the email list. It's interesting to read the daily posts.
