Hiya,
Well done everyone, and it is great to see so many people busting out work. :) Well done indeed.
Shapemaster, I love the colours and the brush technique that you have with the fortress peice. I really wish that you pushed it farther. I would love to see, what you could do with it, using more detail. :) Nice work. I like the block use of colour more so than the "squiggly" lines texture, but I see what you were going for.
Welcome to the thread, ICeSoul. Nice colour and idea, but it seems like there is some issues with the anatomy, but I hope to see more from you.
paraffinumLiquidum, nice colour work on the man in the water and the landscape. I wish that you pushed the values more on the landscape piece and differentiated the shapes a bit more. Don't worry about your speed, as it will come. I still struggle with it as well. Some days it comes fast, but others it seems to so distant. Nice rendering for the water, but I would work more on the anatomy of the man, but overall nice work on the man in the water.
AnniDkH, nice work on the kazinczy, but even if you didn't like it. You should post the shaded version. :) I like the 'scratchbookesque' version of the piece though. it is a nice take on it. I hope to see more.
NoKiddingNewbie, nice start on the sketch, and you pushed out much of the shapes and forms. I do wish, if you would have defined the values even further. Keep it up.
GaugeQueen, even if you can't get the eyes right, give it at chance. You can do it. Sometimes just look at the shapes and and forms. You can also try using the negative spaces more. it will assist you with your anatomy. Keep it up. You are having some anatomical issues, but I think that you are coming along, so keep at it. The colours are a bit bright on your landscape, but I think that you started to get a understanding of the depth and texture. You should try to push that a bit more and mute some of your colours. I think that you will get it in no time. I hope to see more.
ironchicken, welcome back and happy new year. I think that your mouse turned out the best, and I like the idea that you had with it. The castle doesn't stand a chance. The anatomy is a bit off on your pieces, but it is good to see you at work. You captured the idea of the forest nicely, but I wish that you pushed the values a bit more.
mxyzptlk, nice colour work of the landscape. I like what you did with the water and the brush that you used for the grass. I wish that you enhanced the values a bit more, perhaps even uping some of the contrast. Nice work over all, and I hope to see more.
donom, nice use of colour in your landscape and keeping the tones simplistic. It has a graphic style, but I think that it punches still. I would have calmed some of the chroma of the greens and yellow though.
rabid1, good to see in the thread and nice work with the perspective. I like that you kept the form pretty close. Nice rendering on the post. I wish that you darkened the values just a bit more. Well done, and hope you participate more.
Zorn1, nice sepia tone for the landscape, and I like what you did with the foreground. The mountains in the background seem a bit flat though. I think that you could push their shapes a bit more.
Okay.. sorry for the long .. long .... long post. :) It is good to see everyone so busy. Here are a few pieces, as I still need to post the others. I am not completely happy with my work as of late, but I have been doing quite a few tests and learning some brushes. In some cases I like the techniques that I have found, but in others it seems to be slowing my process. Well it is all learning right?
The first is the cheetah, and I tried various brushes and techniques with this one. I wanted to do it quickly, but I did not finish it as fast as I would have liked. I am not completely happy with it either. I spent about 45 to 50 minutes on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/cheetah1.jpg
On the woman with the sword, I tried to take a silly approach. Since many of the swords in games are ludacris in size and shape. I know that we have a sense of disbelief, but I think that sometimes the more realistic arms and armour has more of a punch and are far mroe aesthetically pleasing. This is the model trying to lift a sword that is far to much for her arms to bear. I don't completely care for the pose or the colours that I used. But I was relatively happy with it. I wanted to keep it gestural, so I spent about 45 to 50 minutes on it tops. I tried various quick gestures, before I settled on this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/sillysword2.jpg
The bust was fun as usual, and I continued testing the technique that I have been trying more as of late. I did not work on a line drawing, but I went straight in with the values and differentiating the planes and forms. I am not completely happy with the results, but I had a lot of fun on this one, and I was able to keep it under 50 minutes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/malebust2.jpg
Okay I did what I hate to do on this one. I lost track of time, and I became lost in the detail. I fell into rendering the face and defining the anatomy. I spent over 2 hours on it. I think, and I know that it does not seem that I did. :( I learned quite a bit on it, and I think that I could do it better and faster the second time. My first gesture seemed to work the best, but I still went off and made more. At the end, I was not happy with the anatomy then I checked it again, finding that I should have used the first gesture. The anatomy bugged me for quite a while. I tried various clothing ideas on her, but I stuck with a sultry cocktail dress, since I wanted to show much of the form and that fabulous pose.

hello everyone first please excuse my low output. This week I started the CG Workshop Face and Figure painting with Don Seegmiller and this sucked me quite in and so I spent a lot of my time doing the exicise over there.
Anyway I'm very happy with everyones output it's looking very good and I'm sort of proud that this thread has recently had its 1000 post! I have learn so much during this time and I look forward to the next 1000 posts. Thanks everyone.
NoKiddingNewbie
I think you did well on the tennisplayer. For such weird poses try to whatch the negative forms very closely and you will have it much easier. For your shading I really would recommend going away from that soft bursh in the early phase of a painting. Try to set your colors and values down where they need to be. Soft burshes tend to take a way those decisions and wash out a painting.
Good job with the bust. One thing; the right eye is a bit to low or in general the features are not quite aligned correctly. Double check the angle of the eyes and mouth on the orignial.
Anni:
I think you did a nice job with the outlines. I think the mouth is a bit to far to the right. I would like to motivate you to post the shaded version even when you are not very happy with it and tell us why. And I'm sure you will get good feedback how to takle that porblem next time. This way noone will be able to give you some feedback.
GaugeQueen:
You had a good start with the diver. But I wish you would work in a more complete way. Even if you don't have to much time try to work you paintings in evenly manner. Don't paint details on the figure and forget the background paint on everything with the same detail. The surrounding allways has influence on the subject if you add the background at the end you will often be surprised how diffrently everything looks and it could be that the subject doesn't fit into the surrounding. As an example take zorns painting of the diver: It is rough but it is evenly rough that is way it still looks complete.
Your skater has good forms I would say the board is not quit in the correct angle and length but the lens used for this image distorted the subject strongly so I guess that made it quite difficult. Don't get frustrated with the feautre of the face. Most often two dark zones are all you need for the eyes in the face. Most of the time there is no need for too much details.
For your landscape painting you allready said it. The colors in the distance are to strong and vivid. Look at other landscape images. The farther you go into the distance the more color of the atmospheare takes influence onto to objects. Normaly the stuff gets more blue and washed out.
Zorn:
Good job on the diver. Rough but good. Good use of highlights to describe the form of the diving gear. You could have gone a bit lighter on his head though..
Nice idea on your landscapepainting. It is still a bit monchromatic and I would say that for such lighting you would need stronger contrasts between light and shadowside.
Ironchicken:
Wow lots of paintings. Good! I like your bust It has a good feeling of form, good values.
Good effort on the wet guy. This one was quite difficult. i think the featurs are not close enough together verticaly. The head is angled backwards so the features come closer together.
A Cheesecastel? Funny idea ^^
The jungle is nice. I think you could have used much darker values on this one but nontheless I like it. The Diver is has good colors but you could have gone way darker in the dark areas. More contrast!
Rabid1:
Hey nice to see you back and I'm glad you liked the ref. Good colors on this one but i feel that some of the shapes are a bit to sharp compared to the rough way you painted it. Sometimes it helps to stay on one layer so you are forced to "cutout" with the brush and everything looks more uniform. The head looks a bit strange almost as if it is not really pinned on the head but floating somehow.
Donom:
I really like your effort. Thats a rally nice landscapepainting. Nice colortransitions. And an nice colorrange in the foreground.
Ajay:
Welcome and what a nice painting. Nice color selcetion, good feeling of distance. There is not much to say about your painting else then it is really good.
ParaffinumLiquidum:
Very nice work on the diver and on your landscape painting. I really like how you put the right colors on the diver that one looks really good. The landscape is very nice as well I like how you painted it in a totaly different lighting. Looks really moody. Nice work on the cloud they the form gives even more the feeling of distance. Good job.
IceSoul:
Welcome to this thread, I hope we will see you regularly in the future. Since your image is your own creation there is not much I can say about it. Maybe the upper part of the head is a bit to small compared with the rest of the face. She has a lot of hair so I guess the upper head shoud be a bit bigger.
Shapemaster:
Nice brushwork on your painting. It has your destinctiv flavor wich I like. But I think you could have pushed it a bit farther. I think the contrast is not strong enough compared to the original.
aethalin:
Wow! What an effort. I really appreaciate how you take so much time to comment on everyones paintings. And I know how much work that is. :)
I really like the colors of your cheetah. The are very warm and fits the image pretty well. I had a very hard time painting this one and in the end photoshop crashed and it was all gone. Anyway yours is pretty good.
Nice approach on the woman with the sword. It is exactly what I was thinking about. Nice formed leg you gave her. I like that. Good expression on the face. Two things I would critic: I would have liked to see more from the second leg to make to pose clearer and better readable. And I think that the face could have used some of the highlights the leg has. But overall nice painting.
The bust is great. And I think your way to get rid of the sketch is a good one. It is something I started some time ago and really like it. And it is one of the main points of the workshop I'm doing at the moment. Most of the students work with an inital sketch and the tutor is motivating everybody to get rid of the sketch and start with the form from rough to details. So I guess we are on the right track.
You last piece has really nice warm colors for the skinn and I am amazed about the likness you achieved. The dress looks abit flat compared to the skin. I think you should have use a biger range of values for the dress.
WOW that was quite some text . I guess it took me longer to write that stuff then to paint my three paintings for this week.
As I said before I don't have to much time and I think I won't have more time the comming 7 weeks until the workshop is over. But I still try to do some work for this thread. Anyway here are my three paintings they are all a bit rushed. But this was a interessting experience to really speed them on the canvas.

Thanks for critiques, Ted and aethalin. The colors ended up too strong because I used a gray too bright in the values layer. I only noticed it when I was working on the color mode layer and I got too lazy to go back and fix it..

GaugeQueen: I like the idea of the dragon.
One advice think about where your main light is comming from and set it into your figure. Use stronger contrasts between light an dark.
Here is my image for today.
There are a lot of errors in it but non the less

Hiya,
Thank you,TedNindo, and I enjoy discussing others work. :) Yeah I realized that I botched the dress, and I should have worked more into it, but I became so lost in the face and celaning up the anatomy. I did learn quite a bit from it though. I should have put more folds and the like on the diaphanous parts of the dress. *nods* I think that I will work more into the woman with the sword. I have the rough beneath the dress, so I can easily show the leg more. The dress seemed to obsfuscate much of the right leg from it's construction. I missed the highlights. *whistles innocently* I will try some tests on the face later. I am starting to remove the sketch more often now. It is still pretty hard for me to do. It must be the OCD part of me. I am enjoying it though, but sometimes I have to force myself not to do it. good luck on the class, as it sounds a lot of fun. Nice gestural paintings on your very quick roughs. You captured much of the forms. My biggest problem is some of the pieces seem off, but with as fast as you went. It is bound to happen. I think once you have time. You should clean up some of the pieces and spend a bit more time on them. I think that your Sarto piece turned out the best so far. I like the used of colour and values. I think that you could have made the face warmer and fixed some of the anatomy, but it was only 26 minutes, so you did quite a bit in that time. Well done. :)
donom, nice idea for the woman's companion. I like the expression as well. if you cleaned up a bit of the anatomy and perspective, I think that it would be ever better. Well done indeed.
GaugeQueen nice idea on the dragon. I think that would be a apt companion for her. I would check the light sources a bit more. The dragon seems a bit flat as well. Maybe, you could work it further for your own? Keep of the good work, and I hope to see more.
AnniDkH, very nice work on the flower. You kept the chroma and values quite well. Yours almost has a watercolour feel to me, perhaps even gouche. Well done, I really liked that one. Your ghost is a nice idea as well. Don't worry about using filters to achieve a desired effect. I think that many in the industry utilize the same. It is different than tradition, in that you can add various effects and alters your brushes in ways that you never could in traditional work. I would spend a bit more on the woman, cleaning up the anatomy a bit further, but I like the concept. I am almost getting a 'raver' feel for the piece, and I think that fits with the persona. Well done.
Irandy12, well done. I think that you did well on the piece. I do think that you made some of the colours a bit to intense, especially in the green area of the plant. nice brushwork and keeping the colurs consistent. I think that you captured the overall form quite well. When you have any questions feel free to ask them. I think that all of us would love to help. I am still learning and re-learning techniques as well. it is what we are all here for, to increase our skills and learn new nuances to add to our repertoire. Well done, and I hope to see more work. :)
Well I didn't get to finish as many, as I wanted this week. Here are a couple so far, and I need to clean up the others, before I post them. Yeah I know, but they turned out so bad that I am hesitant to post them. I loved the assignments lately, but here are the ones that I have to a completion. I am not completely happy with them, but I learned something from each.
The first is the man in the scuba suit. I went at it with no line drawing again. I tried to feel out the shapes and forms as quickly as possible. I am not overly happy with it's execution, but I still enjoyed working on it. I spent about 45 minutes on it. I don't think that I rendered the water or the character, as realistic as I should have.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/scubaman1.jpg
The Sarto, I love doing, and I think that I might bring it to more of a finalized piece. The colours and ambience of the piece relaly grabbed me. I learned quite a bit on it, and I spent about a hour and a half. A bit longer than I wanted, but it came out easier than I was expecting. Perhaps, it falls to the piece inspired me that much. I used the same technique as usual lately. I went straight for feeling out the planes and forms, instead of focusing on a sketch of line drawing.

Hi AnniDkH. I really like your ghost girl and I like the idea that you tried to push more the pose by drawing her while she walks instead of just standing there. In my opinion
that makes her more interesting.
If you don't mind I did some suggestions by drawing a stick figure beside your ghost girl to show how you could push even more your pose to make her walking pose more dynamic. Look to it that the most of its weight is on one foot so that its shoulders and arms twist off-axis from the hips and legs. The standing leg pushes the hip a bit up while the relaxed side falls down. I gues the sketch will makes it more clear what I want say. Keep at it!

todays exercise it to get this guy really into trouble and paint him afterwards. Think about Bruce Willis in Die Hard. How he looked at the beginning and at the end of the movie. hey Fischkopf,
really happy to see you back around. I think you did a good job on the guy. I like the head.
Just one thing I would like to recommend. Decide on what side you want to put the details, lightside or darkside but do not put them on both equally. It is a natural thing of viewing either it is dark an your eye is adapted to see the details in the dark and the lights get very strong, or you see the details in the light and the dark side goes much blurier.
For this painting I would leave a way the stong contrast in the darkside.

todays exercise is to take one of the 3 perspectives to create picture with a figure doing a something. These pictures should help to get an idea about the pose. I was thinking about a fishing men. But if you can come up with something else then thats fine too. And feel free to exagerate the pose.

Hiya,
Very well done work, everyone. :) It is good to see so many doing art and so many new ones joining in.
paraffinumLiquidum, nice work sir, I like the idea of the ghost/ zombie and the execution is nice. It has a movie poster feel to it. Her left arm seems kind of disproportionate though. Nice colour and light and shade on the male model, the anatomoy seems a bit off in the shoulder area, or at least seems to be, but over all well done. Very nice work on the maid, it brought a chuckle from me. The kitten looks very cute. nice pose for the woman as well. Your iguana looks nice as well, but it seems to be floating. You capture the gesture well enough though. Amusing work with the plane. *laughs* I like the water for the fisherman, but forshortening on the figure seems off. The movement of your sniper is nice, but I wish that you differentiated the colours and shapes more. I think that you could have defined the elements better, but the movement is very nice.
TedNindo, thank you, and i agree on the swimmer. I think that I really need to push my contrast and values more. I am wondering, if it is because my monitor. I have a couple extras, so I may try that along with testing my values and chroma further. Nice colours on your pilot, but the figure seems disproportionate. The arms seem a bit small for the figgure. You caught the pose though and the posture.
MadMatix, what about your rendering style do you not like? If you can give a idea, I figure that many here would like to help. You do need some help on your figures, but the more you draw them the easier that they become. :) So just keep on practicing. I would say grab some good anatomy books and draw from life as well. Bridgeman, Hobarth, and Loomis books are always great to sketch and learn from. You should try to do gestures of people, whenever you can.
ChrisGreyKinght, nice work on the lighting of your iguana, for the scales you might want to try various brushes and settings. I would just try a couple variations. Scales and fur canbe a pain, but with the righ tools , brushes> you can accomplish quite a bit. The lighting and colour of your flower turned out nice as well. Well done keeping the chroma consistent.
Zorn1, on your Hayes, I wish if you would have pushed your value and colours further. It seems pretty drastic in colour and value. You did capture her expression well. The colour and lighting of your iguana turned out rather well, but it seems to be floating a bit, and I think that the value could have been pushed a bit more. Well done though. The landscape does look a bit strange, but it is nice to see you playing with various brushes. I think that the chroma and value is part of the issue. nice work on the Die Hard Homage... It seems very much like a comic panel. The cartoon style works well. Nice colour and lighting on the male model, but his core seems off anatomically, the abs area especially. The maid brought about a chuckle and a groan at the same time. I am not sure what to say. *laughs* Nice work though on the plane, you captured the idea of it well enough. I like the metal singer as well. The idea is pretty neat.
mxyzptik, well done on the Hayes piece. I think that you caught the style and colours well. I like how you worked with the value of the piece. A nice reproduction, and I hope to see more from you.
ryokun, *laughs* nice work sir, and I really like how your Die Hard guy turned out. The maid is also nice, and they both have a nice character and aesthetic to them.
fischkof, nice value and form on your male model. I concur with TedNindo's assessment. the values of the abs seem rather drastic in form. I think that they could have been subdued further. You should post more though.
donom, I like the graphic style of the pieces, but I think that your maid turned out the best. The anatomy is off on the arms, but I like her pose and character. Well done.. and hope to see more.
siiilon, I like your landscape, the snow and mountains truned out well. I do think that you could have pushed the shadows a bit more, but very well done. You caught the over all gesture of the male model well also, and I like the value of the piece. Some of the shapes do get lost though. nice work on the iguana, but it does seem a bit subdued. I do like the style that you used, and it does seem consistent colour-wise, but I think that the highlights could have been more vibrant, very nice work though. The same with your sniper, very nice gesture and movement. You have nice form, and I like the way that you showed the grass, without becoming to complex. I hope to see more work from you.
I have not had much time to devote to the thread, even though I have enjoyed much of the references with moving, again, and various other time stealing things. I am not very happy with the work either, but I would rather post it and learn from all the mistakes as well as the ones that work.
The first is the barn, the idea was a type of holographic museum. I don't overly care for the execusion, adn I think that the perspective needs work. I spent about 30 to 35 minutes on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/barninmuseum3.jpg
The next is the fort in the red rock canyon. I really enjoyed the subject matter, and I do want to go back into it again later. I tried a couple different brushes and techniques on this one. I know that it still has a long way to go, but it was really informative. I spent about 40 minutes on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/redrockfort1.jpg
The next is the pilot, and I am realyl not happy with it. I botched the suit, and it doesn't feel cohesive. I spent about 30 or so minutes on it. I might have spent more fiddling with it later, but I just didn't want to look at it anymore. *laughs*
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/jetpilot1.jpg
The maid piece was fun, and I tried to go at it lightheartedly. I tried a couple variations, but I just went with her "cleaning" out the safe. It was a fun enough piece, but I am not quite happy with it. I wanted it to be loose, but I think that I left it to loose. I spent about 30 to 35 minutes on it. I wanted to goof off more with a chalk style brush as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/maidcleaning1.jpg
I really enjoyed the bust, but I find myself loving them more and more. I spent longer on it that much of my pieces as of late. I am not completely content, but it was fun. I spent about an hour on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/headbust2.jpg
The final I really want to clean up and make into an illustration. I liked the idea of coming up with a new piece from a pose. I altered the pose a bit to feel more anatomically correct. I still think that I need to clean up some anatomy issues. The final stroke has been done before, but I still enjoy it everyonce in a while. :) I spent about 30 to 40 minutes on it, as i tried various stances on the pose.

As always take care, be safe, and farewell

[The flying polyps were a] horrible elder race of half polypous, utterly alien entities... They were only partly material and had the power of aerial motion, despite the absence of wings... [They exhibited] a monstrous plasticity and ... temporary lapses of visibility... [S]ingular whistling noises and colossal footprints made up of five circular toe marks seemed also to be associated with them.

I have a couple of paints here that are from the past week.
First up, house as fort. About an hour in PS, experimenting with custom brushes to get a nice industrial-looking silhouette. I might try and develop this more, and turn it into a matte painting or at least a detailed landscape--neither of which I've done before.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e184/stonecoldninja/fortcopy.jpg
And then, the portrait. A frustrating 90 minutes trying to get the face right...and it's still not there. Blerg. It was the kind of thing where the more I worked on it, the further away I got.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e184/stonecoldninja/portrait3.jpg
Also, I just want to add a note of thanks to TedNindo for keeping up with this thread and suggesting daily exercises. It's very useful to have this kind of structured format for practice. So again, thanks.

ChrisGreyKnight - how do you render the highlights on the rubber. Is it all painted or do you use the dodge and blur tools?

Good use of texture in the wall.
Did you use any reference for that? If yes please post it.

hey augizzle no problems at all. Doesn't matter what picture you take. Older or newer. About the canvas size: Normaly I take the reference image, delete it and blow the resolution up so that the bigger size is somewhere around 1600 px.

Here is one from today. Again, I'm starting from the begining on these. I hope to catch up to the current pic one day. This pic was a challenge and the fact that it was to be done in 20 min took it to the next level for me.

hey Kageko and vicmonty. Nice efforts and good colors in both pictures.
Just as a side note: You don't have to restrict yourself to 20 minutes but that sometimes helps to keep you from spending all day on this exercise.

Hey there fellas, as a bit of advice - don't be afraid to use harder, more jagged brushes.
Might also want to try creating some custom brushes of your own, particularly with environments - they can help to cut your painting time down exponentially.
Keep it up.

@ charismaticgrl (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=379024)
you can upload your images at photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) or similar services like imageshack (http://forums.cgsociety.org/www.imageshack.us) etc. Thats the easiest way if you don't have your own webspace.
Or you can use Attachments i guess, although i prefer external imagehosts...
