I think i spent too much time on the ear and mouth and the shadow transition.. 45mins so the rest of the image was just quickly sketched in there and I didn't finishe the eyes but hey that happens. mine doesn't look poutie enough.. I don't know if its the mouth of the eyebrows. and i totally gave this girl my nose I looked at everyone else and the original just before posting this and notice that she has a very straight sharp nose and i gave her a curved up rounded one. oops. better luck next time i guess

I have been a bit slack on this thread recently. I don't usually go for vehicles as a subject, but you should always step outside your comfort zone! Restricted palette and a tiny (2%) radial blur to cheat the rotor tips. Stopped at 30mins.

After putting my sketch next to the original on photoshop, I saw that:
I got her face very wrong T_T Too wide this time.
The hat too wasnt very good, and something about her pose. Somehow it feels like the right arm should be farther from the body...
why is it so hard to see those things while im drawing?? :P
Overall, Im quite satisfied with the initial result.

Hiya and good work everyone :),
thank you Ted. I usually look for the negative spaces. It is easy to tell on the many rich paintings of Caravaggio and the like. With all the black and rich dark brown, you can differentiate shapes. It is, how I was taught to work out figures, when I am having issues after the initial gesture. You should give it a try :). Doh!!! *coughs* Well umm I was checking to see, if you would notice. Umm yeah!! *ducks*
Leath, nice initial sketch. You may want to check the shouldersm as they should be wider. If you have issues with the figure, check the negative spaces. With so much black and deep colour, you can get a good idea of the forms and shapes of the figure. It helps me a great deal. On her right shoulder, think of how the shoulder is rolled forward. it should give you a better idea. :).
Zorn, nice initial sketch and colour comp, try to bring out the richer colours of the picture, and remember how much light bounces :). Nice start though.
andalusite, nice start on the piece, you have a nice colour worked out fairly quickly. I think that it needs to be a tad darker.
Here is mine for the day, a nice topic by the way. She has a nice dynamic pose :).
Here is the initial sketch 25 to 30 minutes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/piratesketch1.jpg
Here is the colour work of the same piece. I spent about a hour and a half on it. I tried to fix some of the anatomy issues, and clean up the pose. I probably spent to long on it. Doh!!

hey everyone.
nikitarose: thank you. And thanks for posting comments to other pictures. That is an important part and very usefull. I wish more people would give feedback to other pictures. So keep that!
aethalin: thanks for answering my question and I'm happy that I pased your test ;). Negativ space is a really good tool, but sometimes when I'm very concentrated I forget to check that aspect. Your pirate drawing is awesome! How you rendered the shoulder and face area is top. Good color observation. The details in the clothing and boots is very nice. You really enrich this thread. And last but not least the pose is very dynamic! And thank you as well for commenting on others picture.
Zorn1: Welcome to this thread and I hope we'll see more from you.
leath: overall I really like your sketch and I like the face it is good looking. The body is maybe a bit to thin and the hat is a bit to big.
here's my quick (30 min) attempt I really want to go back and spend some more time with that picture.
-The pose is not dynamic enough yet
- The head is somehow placed wrong
- hte left arm is too long..
so theres much to do...

Hiya,
Thank you Ted, as I am mixed about the painting. Somethings I like some i don't. I do think that I took a bit to long on it. I used the scribble technique *giggles* I kept altering the colour and temperature a bit at a time. I am still really learning how to blend and paint in photoshop. It is so different from oils, watercolour and acrylics, but I do enjoy it.
I have been trying to use negative space a lot more now. It has always been a tool, but one that I did not use enough in 2d animation. We just ahve to train ourselves to use it more :).
On your pieces, I really like the initial sketch of the pirate. You have the dynamic form down nicely, and with only 30 minutes into it. You pulled off a decent amount of detail and structure. The more finalized piece, I like as well. btu something with her eyes are bugging me. I can't quite place it. it is nice work though. :) I like the octopus as well, but it does seem a bit static, but I could be mistaked. I know underwater. You move a bit slowly, but it just does not feel as flowing. It could be the movement or even the detail work causing it. It also doesn't seem to fit in the environment as much. Overall I think that it is a nice piece. The fashion piece is not bad, but the anatomy seems a bit off on it. It doesn't have that dynamic shift that models tend to get in their struts. The costume design is fine with me, as not everything has to be outlandish :).
Nikita not to bad a start at all :) I think that you have some of the colours down. You should trying to bring ti to a more rendered form.
Zorn not a bad sketch, and don't worry about time. Sometimes we really need to noddle things out :) *coughs and stays quiet about his odsessive compulsive tendencies* The costume has a nice enough feel, but the figure does see a bit off anatomically wise, but with nodels now-a-days you never know. She just seems really really tall and emanciated. nice work none the less :)
Okay here is my work for this one. I liked the subject matter, so i did a couple of the fashion. They were really quick. The first set were done in painter with chalk, glow, and watercolour. I spent about 5 to 10 minutes on each.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/quickfigurefashions.jpg
This next one I did in painter with the chalk brush. I think about 5 to 10 minutes, but I think closer to 5.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/fashionsketch2.jpg
The final set I did in photoshop with custom brushes. I spent mroe time on these ones about 15 minutes or so a piece. I tried to give a autumn feel for these ones. I tried to keep all of them somewhat consistent for the "fashion show"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/fashionsketch3.jpg
I hope that you like them and feel free to give all the criticism that you want :).
I will try the octopus tomorrow, once i have the time.

Nice subject, Ted. :)
Nice start Zorn1, but I think that the outline overpowers the rest of the piece. I do like the start and the atmosphere of the piece, but I am unsure on the verisimilitude of a lightning storm in that region, but I am new to this area. :)
domon check online, you can find quite a few pictures for reference. If anything think of it logically, on how the weight of snow might affect plant-life. If I can find my discs of photos that I took last winter, a actual winter with snow :P, I will up them. It does depend on the plant, but snow sticks to a lot and can weight down foliage quite a bit. Thinking of the snow covered trees that you see. I could be absolutely off, but I at least remember as such.
Here is my piece I think about 55 minutes to a hour. I am still not very happy with it, but it is a decent enough rough... I think. In photoshop with custom brushes that I made.

hey aethalin thanks for your comments. I wasn't to much pleased with the octopus picture but I couldn't point at it. What you said is are good points though. But I still would have difficult times to get those points better. Especialy the flowting part.
For the pirate face I wanted to uncover the second eye but somehow it felt not completely right. Maybe I should go back an try to clean up that part.
Your landscape painting was very nice good colors for snow and the shadows. What I miss a bit is the color reflections of the red stones in the snow I know that such stuff is rahter minor but sometimes it has a big effect.

aethalin you were talking about negative spaces I thought this one is a pretty good image to get the idea across:

The negativ spaces are green on this image and often much easier to compare then the figure it self. So I try to keep these shapes in mind while drawing from reference. Even if I draw from mind interessting negativ spaces helps creating good sillouetts.
And this image should visualise an other helping tool. I try to conect points on the painting and compare the angles and distances between on the drawing and on the oringinal.

Hiya,
great ideas for the last couple days, Ted. Thank you and I completley agree about the snow scene. Doh!!! I forgot the radiosity :(. *sighs* Very good catch, I may work into it, to integrate more of those colours.
Zorn, Chris, and Ted nice work on the sculpture. A do agree the persepctive is a bit off, but well done. Nice rendering technique, Zorn, although you might want to include those rich bounce light colours on the underside of the brow. I see, where you added the highlights, but the photo seems to have a richer colour of ochres and siennas. Nice work though.
Nice sketch and colour work on the figure, Ted. I like the dynamic flow that you kept with the painting. I see, what you mean about the face. I noticed, when I sketched it. I also had some issues. Chris, on your sketch you have the idea of the pose down, but you might want to work out the anatomy better, as it has some problems.
*nods* You are definatley right,Ted. This was a great pose to work out the positive and negative shapes. Nice layout to help others. I used shapes to tighten the drawing, after I drew down the initial gesture.
AnniDkh, nice idea. for some reason, I am thinking a GQ version Popeye. :)
Okay here are a couple for the last few days, as I have not had time to post them.
The initial sketch of the sculpture 15 to 20 minutes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/castheadline.jpg
The colour sketch that I spent far longer than I wanted. I think maybe a hour to hour and a half. I lost track of time, while I was noodling out colour. I am not very happy with it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/casthead1.jpg
Okay, the initial gesture I had down pretty quick, about 3 minutes, but that bloody right foot just didn't like right in the detail sketch stage. I spent about 3 to 5 other minutes just on that bugger. *glares menacingly at the foot* Sometimes the OCD tendencies come out :). Over all the sketch too maybe 10 to 12 minutes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/sidekickgirl1.jpg
The colour part I worked far longer than I meant to do, as I got lost again noodling colour and form about. I am pretty sure that I did not take more than 2 hours. I think that it was closer to 1 hour and a half.

hey donom I like the shadingstyle on the last one, altough you didn't as light and as dark as on the reference. And the head seems a bit narrow.
hi AnniDkH good to see you back. Your head is a bit to big so he looks like 5 years younger on your image, but I like the way you sculpted his body. You just took the most important forms and did not bother to get down every detail which worked very well. But you could have stressed the light to dark gradient from top left to buttom right a bit more. The tattoo is sweet... go sailor boy!
hi aethalin nice approaches and thank you for your comments.
Both the head and the boxing girl look very good. Colors are top. The head is a bit to much turned to the right but overall you got the perspective right. I would say best of us all. The boxing girl sketch is super I love these sketches. The colored version is good as well you managed to keep that vivid feeling of the sketch. You killed the exagerated perspectiv though. The right boxing glove and her foot/leg are to small. It looks right for it self but as I said the perspective is not as stong as in the reference.
And I like the face you gave her. Much better then mine.
hi Chris. Cool. the shading looks good. you have some anotomy issues but the feeling of the light is great.

Hiya,
Pretty late, as I have been very busy, but here goes.
Ted, I still likethe shading that you gave the tattooed man. The tattoo itself is not bad either. Have you seen some of the tattoos out there? *shudders* It seems a bit "cartoon-esque" than normal for you, but over all I think it is nice. It seems a bit different from the reference. I see, what you mean on the figure *sighs* I think that I worked to hard on the foot alone, instead of working with the figure. I think that I am going to rework it, to give it that exaggerated perspective that is so prevalent in the reference.
donom, I wished that you would have defined the jet and the background a bit more. it is a nice rapid technique, but it seems a bit lost. More light and dark, when rendering the jet itself would have been nice as well. I like the idea that you gave for the bruised man. It is a neat idea. It reminds me of that old arcade game Punch-out. A good start on the Carravagio piece, but I think that you need to work more no the dark and light in the picture, but a nice start and value study.
andalusite, thank you, and I like the gestural quality that you have with both pieces. I think that you are right about the bust. I am not overly happy with it. The back leg, on the woman kicking, seems to be a bit off anatomically wise. I like how you got the perspective of the kicking foot though.
Here are a few pics of the recent spped paintings...
The tattooed man took about 1 hour, since i really got lost in designing and redesigning the tattoos. I am not overly happy with it, but it is a start.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/maletatto1.jpg
On the jet, I spent about 40 minutes on it. I tried to get the textures down with one brush, which I realize just was not a good idea. The whole piece I think needs more work to differential shapes and values.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/jetspeed1.jpg
The Carravagio piece seemed easier to me, as I spent about 50 minutes on it. The colours were easy to decipher, as Carravagio almost always has those rich siennas, umbers, ochres, and red. I love his work.. *coughs* sorry, a bit to fawning, when it comes to Carrivagio. I feel that this piece still needs work, but I think that I captured some of the sam richness and value definition so prevalent in his work. Well at least I hope that I did :)

hey everyone nice quality.
leath: good sketches - good overall forms
zorn: your fighterjet looks fantastic good rendering and good colors really nice.
andelusite: I like your fighter cool idea - dynamic feel! I'm thinking about an exercise where you just can use one brush.
aethalin: The guy is quite nice. The plane looks a bit destorted though. Your carrivagio looks good although the colors seem a bit washed out. But I had a lot of trouble with these colors myself.
Chris: The shading is nice, the values are very good. I like how your rendered the beard. But try to take more care about the angles.
donom: I like your carrivagio very much. With just a few values you sculped that head pretty nicely. But as usual you could have got some what higher with the contrast ;- )
I would say around 30 minutes:

Aethalin, Ted: Thank both of you for the C&C. I desaturated the original Caravaggio to compare and yeah, the shadows and highlights are really bolder than I made them. The beaten up guy was definetly inspired by the Street Fighter II losing portraits, but I don't think I've really played Punch Out, maybe SFII itself borrowed from that one? On the jet, I really liked andalusite's work. The technique fit the picture's theme really well and took so little time..

Ironchicken: I like your carvaggio the shapes are very well definded. The jet is maybe a bit to simplified. The girl and the boy are okay. The purple color on the buttom is interessting.
Donom: Your soldier is very good, good contrast this time around. Illustrative style. With the girl I would say you could get more contrast on this one. To be honest I had to think of you while I was choosing this image because it has really high contrasts in it. I think this was a very difficult one. And your face looks quite good.
Chris: good progress! Altough I still think you need to take more care about angles, spaces and relations between different bodyparts or facial features.
I like your pumkin though. Good colorselection.

Hiya,
Playing catch up again, as I have been really busy, but here are a few of the pieces. Great subjects by the way Ted. :)
Leath, thank you sir, and very good start on your sketches. They need defined a bit more, but they get the idea down. YOu did the perspective of the head well. It was a difficult one. I wish that you would have defined the upper part of the lip more though. The girl seems a bit of anatomically, and the foreshortening seems off, but you kept the flowing movement and the pose. Good job. :)
Ted, thank you, and yeah on the jet, I tried to keep it really small to work out the shapes as fast as possible. I should have brought it closer to define it more and fix the perspective and flow. I think that my brush was to low opacity with the Carravagio, and I did have some issues with the colour. I tried to keep the rich warmth, but I feel that in some places. I made it to muddy. Nice work on the Carravagio! :) I think that you captured the dark and light better than I. The mouth seems a bit off though but since you only spent 30 minutes really nice work getting the colour and shapes down that quickly. On the Bronzio, it does not seem up to your usual caliber. You defined some of the shapes, but I don't think that you captured the colour and form like normally do. It mostly likely would have been the sense of being rushed. Nice work though, and the monster fits well within the cave. He seems cute. :)
Zorn1, very nice work on the Hornet. I like the close up view of it, and you designed it's armaments rather well.
Nice work Chris, the face is really off on the woman, but you have the body down well enough. :) You kept the values pretty consistent. Nice work on the soldier. but I wish that you rendered more of the field. You kept a consistent value. Nice work!
Donom, nice colour on the girl, the face is off, but I rather like the movement of colour that you have. I think that the value needs worked out further, since some places should be far darker. I do think that you kept the rich warmth.
Nice work ironchicken, you have the colours down well, but they have anatomical isssues, esecially in the face. I like, how you kept the normal warmth of the Carravagio pice, but the head seems really elongated. Nice work all together.
Okay here are a few of the pieces..
The forest painting I think took between 1 hour to a hour and 20 minutes. I lost track of time, while rendering and talking to my nephew. I used a variety of custom burshes and of course the chalk style brush.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/forestspeed1.jpg
The flooded ghost town, I spent about a hour or so on. I had to fix some issues, or it would have taken far less. I am still not overly happy with it, but I do want to work more into it later.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/townunderwater.jpg
On the soldier, I spent about fifty minutes to a hour and 10 minutes tops. I meant to spend less, but I was lost in the rendering and talking to my nephew again. I used the chalk style brush and various custom styles.

wow aethalin very nice work again. I absolutly love your soldier. looks awesome it lacks a bit of contrast on the backpack side of the soldier but the atmosphere is really good. Thats ture for your forrest image as well. You captured the feel perfectly. The darkest texture on the left side make it look just a but flat, it works fine on the right side though. But how you worked out the lightrays is impressiv.
The sunken ghost town is ok, but the water does not look very convincing I would say the reflection is to consistent. If I'm right the reflection should be weaker the closer it is to the viewer because of the changed angle.
Your right I shouldn't rush out pictures the result normaly shows that kind of process..
Glad you like the monster... cute is absolutly ok with me.
Chris: CaveBG looks good. Values are good, could have gone maybe a bit lighter on the highlights...
heres my image of the image of two days ago 2 hours I would say. Was quite difficult. Head perspective, rotation in the uper body. But the forms were good to read.

Hiya,
Thank you Ted! Yeah, I am having a bit of issues with contrast lately. I think that I am upping the contrast enough and capturing the colour, but if I don't walk away for a bit, it turns out washed out. I having been trying to walk away from my computer for a bit, as that helped me before. I have always like subdued hues and shades, so I need to work on more drastic colour changes. I love the reference that you have been posting lately, as it has been helping me quite a bit. *nods* On the sunken city, I am really not happy with the reflections. You are dead on about them diffusing and losing some of the cirsp nature the closer they get. I think that I really need to work into that more. I may head to the man-made lake here and sketch out some with water colour to get a better idea of it. Thank you for all of the critiques! :)
I really like what you did with the woman, and I feel that you capture it rather well. You are correct though. I highlights are far brighter that you have. It is white and in some places a faint hansa yellow, but very very pale. it is very nice over all.
I am a bit behind, but here are a couple more.
On the Bronzino, I tried to capture as much of the image. as fast as I could. I went for a loose chalk feel. I don't think that I captured enough, but it was a learning experience. I spent about 30 to 35 minutes on it. I may go into it later, but I am enjoying just coming up with new pieces. This thread is helping me quite a bit in that respect.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Brozia1.jpg
The model I spent a bit longer that I meant, but it turned out okay. I am not completely happy with it, but I feel that I captured a good bit of it. I do think that my values are to stark in some areas. I may work back into it later. I spent about 1 hour to a hour and 10 minutes. I was inspired by the chalk brush again. :) It was the only brush that I used. The figure sketch actually came out rather quickly. I only had some minute issues with the head perspective. I was rather surprised. One of those happy accidents. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/femalemodel1.jpg
The cave creature, I did not spend overly long, but I did enjoy planning out the cave. I haven't painted nearly enough real caves. I may have to delve into that one deeper. :) *coughs* I spent about 40 to 45 minutes on it with mostly the chalk brush but one other.

Hiya,
okay so now I have finally caught up. :) Nice idea by the way, Ted. I don't think that I have painted a car for a while, since last I worked on a mod. Thank you! It was rather enjoyable.
Okay I spent about 55 to 60 minutes on this one, as I had some issues with the perpective of the car at first. I am not completely happy with it, but I feel that it gets the idea down. I used mostly the chalk brush at first, then I used a couple custom brushes, before I added more detail with the chalk brush. I hope that I turned out well. :)

Lingerie - Very contrasty and some odd colours
Ted - Where did you get a photo of my sister in her undies?
http://www.kyanite.co.uk/images/lingerie.jpg
St Matthew - 60 mins
Proportions were tricky for everyone I think: Size of the ear, length of face, angle of face. And how dark to take the shadows to get the full range of values.
So I did a value sketch and then a colour overlay. ALthough it doesnt come anywhere close to the colours in the original.
http://www.kyanite.co.uk/images/stmatthew_gr.jpg
http://www.kyanite.co.uk/images/stmatthew_cl.jpg
Ted - You have the main forms in the Caravaggio. It looks like you have used a big brush? Maybe go to a smaller brush to work in the details.
Chris - I like the way you have captured the camo on the soldier. Although I think you could increase the overall range of values from light on the right to dark on the left of the figure.
Domon - Nice impression of the wood. You could emphasise the light by making the left and right edges darker. And maybe bring the warmer reds towards the viewer to fake the depth a bit.
I see you have used the same stylie for the chick in her underwear.
Aethelin - Holy carp! You are very productive. I like the way you have pushed the contrast in the wood. It could go even darker? I too like the chalk brush but Im not too keen on using for female skin.

wow aethalin you have quite an high output and with very good quality! I like the brush you used. I need to try to use more different brushes. You have very nice and rich color on the woman this one looks great. The cavemonster is nice as well. Your bronzino is way better then mine I really like how how the lower face turned out. The car picture has a good feel, but the darks could be stronger. Anyway really nice work!
andalusit: you have quite a nice looking sister ;). If you have don't hold back to share more photos :D. Your lingery picture is good. You used good colors. The contrast between your lights and darks could be higher. This was one of the focuspoints of this image. And I think the head is a bit to small. Your Carvaggio looks good, I prefere the BW one. Coloring BW stuff is a bit tricky and needs a bit of experimenting but you can find good tutorials on the web. If I stumble upon one of them I will post it.
About using a big brush, you are right I use big brushes at the moment to prevent myself to go into details to soon. Sometimes the details get lost alltogether but right now I'm ok with that.
Thank you for shareing your thoughts about everybodys pictures. Keep it comming.
donom: Nice Hand. I like the dynamic feel and you gave yourself a good challenge with that pose. The monster is sweet but the colors and the lighting seem not to much adapted to the background.

Hiya,
Nice work everyone :).
Thank you, Ted. I really need to work on pushing my darks and contrasts further. I am noticing that it is still a problem that I have. Yeah, working with new brushes can be a blast. I have been trying to use all that I can. Sometimes I still fall to my ubiquitous chalk style brush. I don't know, but I really like it. Nicee gestural feel of the hand, but I wish that you worked out the forms more on the head. I do like it overall though.
ryokun, nice work on the head, and you captured some of the forms and shapes rather well. I like the feel of it. It is loose, but captures the detail. You did rather well on the deer also. I like how you rendered the the fur. I really like the feel of the girl. It reminds me of a storyboard panel. It is rather cute :).
kazerniel, nice work on the girl. She is rather cute and eager to open her present :).
ChrisGreyknight, the anatomy of the face seems a bit off, as does the position of the head. I do think that you captured some of the shapes. Yeah, the hair could be a pain. It was a nice learning experience though.
donom, nice work on the hand, I like the pose that you used. You went with a more difficult one. Nice work on the gesture of it. The creture is neat, but it does not seem to fit with the picture, and it tends to get lost. Maybe work on the likes and colours a bit more?
Very nice subjects for the last few days. I still need to up the newest one, which sounds rather fun :). Okay for the first, the Chateaubriand was fun, and I am finding myself enjoying doing head casts more and more. :) I lost track of time on this one, so I think about 45 minutes to a hour. :( Probably closer to a hour, before I physically drug myself away from it. I am still not overly happy with it, but it was a learning experience.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/casthead2.jpg
I did something different with the hand. It is with traditional media, watercolour pencil. I bought a couple, and I thought that I would play. It is pretty rough, and I am not overly happy with it. I spent about 30 minutes on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/myhand.jpg

hi kazerniel!
I have a suggestion concerning your little problem. an easy approach to illustrate hands is to use the negative space. hands are often difficult zu illustrate. they often look complex. but if you try just by looking at the negative spaces, it is a lot easier. the whole principle can be used for the body, head, etc.
here is an example how you can see the negative space.
hope it helps you a bit.

chris: wow, really love the face of your little freestyle masterpiece there.. ! great!
zorn1: beautiful painting, i personally jsut wish the texture of the 'kimono' would show more weight by giving the impression the texture is pulled down by gravity (arm). colors are great imho.
madmatix: i think its a great sketch. nice silhouette. i recommend some detail studies... draw the hands again, seperately and construct them with the help of an anatomy book for artists, if necessary.

Hello Tednindo,
well, honestly, also for the fun of it, I would do this 'inbetween' by eye-balling... but for those who feel too shaky with that technique i can recommend the following to 'carve' a rough inbetween as a reference out of this:
STEP 1
http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/big/7rfm-j.jpg
do a trace of the first pose and the last pose... indicate some background markers so you can somewhat match the both poses on top of each other. the background moves a lot in this example, so i try to find points in the pictures that are somehow the same (in red).
then i put the both poses on top of each other, reducing their opacity and draw an inbetween on a new layer on top. I choose the middle of the two heads, the feet, knees, shoulders everything and workout a sorta guide this way. Don't forget movements happen in arcs and not in straight lines, keep that in mind when choosing the middle of everything.
This is just a drawing that sits exaclty in the middle of the both. In reality and om animation we would indicate different timings for different things. First of all, due to the weight the character would move slower from the first drawing to the last, so I would do an inbetween maybe on third that favours the first pose.
There are many more things we could dive into and it would just get way too complicated, so I thought we stop here and 'just' produce an inbetween in the middle of the two drawings, it might differ from the actual image though very certainly.
STEP 2
http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/big/7rfm-k.jpg
I would sorta clean up the image a little and turn off all the other layers... add color and would use this image as my first sketch and go from there...
Hope that helps.
Good luck,
Oli

Hiya,
Nice work, everyone. :)
Ryokun, nice tutorial for the none animators. I really like your tiger. You kept a nice gesture with the line and colour. I think that it captures it well. You geisha is nice as well, but it seems kind of flat to me. I can see, what style you were going for though.
Chrisgreyknight, I agree. You are getting better. I like you geisha more, than the woman with the razorblade. Something about ti seems off to me. The hands pretty wonky as well. I can see, what you were going for, but I would rework the hands more, so they are more anatomically correct.
Zorn1, nice work. Although the geisha seems off to me. The cranium seems far to large for the rest of the head. I like the tiger. You kept the movement well. The kitty is cute :)
Okay me playing catch up, as I have been busy building my portfolio again.
I relaly like many of the topics, so please keep them coming. I would love to see another inbetween sketch as well. I will post my others tomorrow.
okay the little girl was cute and rather fun. I spent about 25 minutes on the sketch. I think that I captured it more than with the very quick value afterwards. which I spent another 5 to 10 minutes on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/littlegirlandpresent.jpg
ON the band piece, I am really not happy with it, but I felt that I should post it. Even if I don't care for it. I spent about 40 to 45 minutes on it, before I pulled myself away from it. I don't know, but it just didnt' hit me.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/musicians1.jpg
The mermaid piece was very very enjoyable. I don't think that I made a mermaid for a while. I am not completely happy with it, but it was a learning experience. I had to rework the tail a couple times. I spent about 50 to 55 minutes on this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/mermaid1.jpg
The head was fun enough, but it didn't grasp me, as much as the other head studies. I did learn something from it, so it was a worthy experience. I spent about 20 to 25 minutes on it, so it is pretty rough. I love doing etchings with my pens, but it was much different with a WACOM. Okay a lot different.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/head1.jpg
The giesha piece was rather fun as well. I used a couple different brushes for this piece, but I mostly used my ubiquitous chalk style brushes. I spent about 45 minutes on this one, but I might have went up to 50 minutes. It was a nice learning experience.

okay theres a lot to comment right now.
ryokun:
thank you for sharing your thoughts about everybodys work its very valubal and helpfull. And thanks for your tipps on the animation exercise. Your images are from very high quality I like all of this weeks work. Althouhg you didn't enjoy the monday topic it came out rather well. The mermaid is really sweet as well. Love her face. Your tiger is very cute. You captured the emotion very well and I like the illustrative style. But your best picture is the geisha. Very nice work. I love how you simplified the detailed pattern on the cloth. It's very styliesed. I think this is a very good example for what can be done if just coping the image is to boring for someone. You interpreted the image in your own way and style.
zorn1:
you were busy as a bee this week. Started with the geisha drawing. Good colors but the proportions are off. The head and the Hand is too big. Your tiger is very cute. It looks like a housecat-version of a tiger. I like the soldier. Very solid technique. Good proportions. Good highlights on some edges. A lot of details and you interpreted it in your own way.
Your Ronaldo caricature is ok, I like the jewelery and the eyes.
Chris:
I'm very pleased with you. :D Your the latest and best proof that what we are doing here really pays of. You make really big leaps forward. Your geisha picture is the best you have ever posted. There are still some anatomy issues with the arm and hands. But you can use colors now your values are good, you know how to shade, compared with what you did a month ago this is amazing. Please keep your good work comming.
Fishkopf:
Thank you for taking the time and commenting the work. And maybe sometimes in the future we will see some drawings from you. For motivation just check Chris work and see what daily training can do ;).
kazerniel:
Welcome back. After you have the main forms on the paper try using a bigger brush for shading. It worked very well for me.
MadMatix:
Your geisha image is nice the pose is very grand. Her right hand is ok. Good you take the time and draw them. Next step for you would be setting the values in just grayscale. Colors are not as important as most think. If the values are right, almost all colors would look good. I'm looking forward and I'm sure you will make progress fast.
AnniDkH:
Good to see you back. I like the expression of your marat. Interessting brush you used.
Aethalin:
You keep em comming. Very nice. You say you work on your portfolio? Would like to see some stuff out of it. And it reminds me that I need to go back and do some stuff for my own portfolio as well.
I like your mermaid picture very much. Nice colors. The face is very cut. Better then the original. I'm not sure about the anatomy wher her back meets her buttom but who can say how that works with mermaids. The geisha picture is ver chalky. Looks good. Although I think you could have stressed the colorcontrast a bit more and here head looks a bit big.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's an integral part of this thread and I wish more would do it.
I tried to do some pics as well altough I had to fight to find the time.
First one:

I tried to flesh it a bit out and I experimented with colors in skintones but in the end not much can be seen. The mouth is to low. Between 30 - 40 minutes.
Second one:

I really wanted to make this one because I loved the colors. I didn't had much time so I rushed it a bit. (25 Minutes)
Third one:

I failed on this one. My tiger doesn't look chilli or cute his face seems rather painfull. To bad.

Hey Irandy12: The quintessence of this thread is practice on a regular basis and sharing your thoughts about your and other peoples work. The 20 minutes timeframe was set to make it short and accsesible. You don't have to stop after 20 minutes but if you take longer just name your total time.

Hiya,
Really great work everyone, keep them coming :).
Ryokun, thank you very much :). You work is really nice, and it keeps a nice flow. I like your girl with the Leia inspired costume. I think thave you captured the movement and feel. For some reason, I am getting a arabic vibe from it. I could also easily see it in a Conan concept. Your superhero girl is really nice as well. I keep thinking the Teen Titans, when i see it.
Chris, you work is coming along nicely. There is a bit of a anatomical issue with your girl. I think that the breasts are throwing the upper body off a bit. The legs and feet seem a bot off as well. The hand looks very very nice. Well done with that, and overall well done.
Zorn1, I like your girl more than the Caravaggio piece, but the anatomy is off on it on some parts of it. You didn't get the nice movements of the hips either. Nice work though. You seem to be getting faster.
donom, nice work sir, I relaly like the gesture of the pole vaulter for some reason. I think that you just captured a nice style. The Caravaggio is pretty nice as well. I like what you did with the stylistic colour and forms approach. The pose seems a bit different from the original piece though.
SpetsK, nice work on the Geisha. Here right hand seems a bit off, but I like your colours and forms. You should post more.
TedNindo, Thank you sir, and i hope keep them coming. I will try to post my portfolio soon enough. I have a sketchbook thread here that I really need to keep up with. You should post yours, once you finish more on it :). Your geisha, I like most of your new pieces. I do with that you would have worked more into it. The right hand gets kind of lost, and it seems a bit lost. You are right about the head, but a interesting concept. Hmm I actually like your tiger. I agree that it is a bit off, but it still keeps some of the cuteness from the photo. If one can call a beast that can rip your head off as cute. Keep them coming, I hope to see more of your work.
Okay here is a my latest drop. I still have catch up to play.
The pole vaulter was a fun little test. I tried a couple variations on the form and pose, but I chose this one. I am still nto really happy with it. I added a quick colour to it. I think that I only spent about 25 minutes on it if that. It has been a while, since i have done inbetween work for 2d.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/polevaulter1.jpg
The tiger was a rather enjoyable exercise. It might be, because I love cats. Anyway, I tried to capture more of the mood and movement with this one, rather than getting lost in the detail per my usual. I spent about 30 to 35 minutes on it. I used my ubiquitous chalk style brush.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/tiger1.jpg
The Caravaggio, I tried to keep a bit simple and work on capturing his warmth and ambience. I am not sure, if I succeeded, but it was a fun exercise. I tried to keep away from to much detail, but I think that I got a bit lost in it again. I spent about 55 minutes to a hour on it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/caravaggio3.jpg
The exotic girl in the Leia costume was a rather enjoyable piece. It is kind of cheesy, but the movement and expression are a nice and enjoyable exercise. I had a bit of problem with the figure, as I was making her to full at first. I reworked it a couple times after the initial gesture. I kind of got lost in this one, as I was enjoying it quite a bit. I spent about a hour and 45 minutes to two hours on it. I think that it was closer to a hour and 45 minutes though. I didn't time it, as well as I meant, since I was "noodling' so much. I am slightly happy with the result.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Leiastyle1.jpg
I will post the superhero tomorrow hopefully. Happy holidays to everyone :).

Hiya,
nice worrk Tednindo :). I like your girl, but I don't think that you pushed the contrast enough. The darks seemed a lot darker on my monitor. You caught the movement of the form though, so that is nice. I like the background that you picked for it as well. The island, I think turned out rather nice. A good 23 minute sketch and concept. I hope that you start posting more as well, and I know what you mean about time constraints.
AnniDkH, very nice work on your island. I like the brushes and colour that you used. You kept a nice contrast with it. I think that you and TedNIndo's both turned out better than mine. Well done, and I concur. You should post more.
Vyse-soa, nice work, but I don't think that you captured the grainy and ruined quality of the building as much. I also think that you could have pushed the chroma a bit more. The building has a warmer and richer quality than what you have, but very nice attempt. I like how you kept the piece consistent with your style. :)
Okay now I have finally caught up. I like some more than others, and I really enjoyed all the assignments that we have had. I am just not as happy with some of my executions.
The superheroine was a lot of fun, and I have not done a superhero or heroine for a whlie. It was pretty fun to come up with a concept. I tried a couple with this one, but I fell to a terra-based heroine. I don't know, but I have always loved that type. I spent about 50 to 55 minutes on this one, at least this version. I am not completely happy with it, but I had fun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/superheroine1.jpg
The ruined building was enjoyable as well. I really liked the subject matter. The colours and intensity of the hues was a nice learning exercise. I spent far longer on this one than I mean, but I wanted to get the perspective relatively correct. I spent about 55 to 60 minutes on it. I am not sure of the time, as I lost part of the first version from a rather nasty virus infecting my main system this weekend.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/oldbuilding1.jpg
I thought that the ghost ship was another nice exercise. I didn't use reference for the backdrop, but I probably should have. I tried to simulate the picture given a bit, then put my own spin on it. I spent about 55 minutes on it. I am not completely happy with the results, but I learned from it. Here are two versions.

your right about the contrast. It's something I really try to get better with.
I like your superhero image. Good idea good execution. Although the superhero itself just looks a bit flat. But maybe its just the perspectiv.
The three image was really difficult I guess. The colors are very strong and you didn't quite managed to get there. But non the less it looks very belivable.

Hiya,
Nice work, Tednindo. :) I like your head study, and I hope that you finish the second one. it was a nice subject matter. I think that you could have pushed the shapes and colours a bit more though. Yours seems a bit more smooth in comparison to the reference, but nice job :). I like the idea of your second piece as well. The man alone in his room pondering his speech is a nice idea. I agree about the lighting, but I think that you could have pushed it a bit more. The perspective is a bit askew, as you said. Good to see you back posting more again.
Nice idea about the man, donom. The execution is kind of cartoon-esque, but I think that the style does come across 1950ish to me. I like that. I wish that you would have pushed the colours and values more on the man in the canoe. I think that you have the perspective, canoe, and man down well, but I think, if you pushed the colours and values a bit more. It would have been even better.
Here are mine for the day. The first piece, the Van Dyck, I rather enjoyed doing. It was a neat exercise for me. I kind of want to work back into it more, but I am keeping myself from doing it. I spent about a hour all together on both heads.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Vandyke1.jpg
The assignment about the man and the speech was pretty amusing. On mine, I for some reason thought, " the cereal bowl heard around the world." Three bowls of cereal later our excitable ponificator finally has his speech and pose ready. Much to the chagrin of his daughter, who has changed twice this breakfast. I spent about 30 to 35 minutes on it. I wanted to keep it loose.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/Thespeech1.jpg
Nice pick for the vehicle today, tedNindo. it was a rather fun one. I tried to keep the shapes more simple, and I hoped to not get lost in the details on this one. I almost did a couple times. I spent about 50 to 55 minutes on it trying different brushes. It was a nice learning experience.

Hello LadyLaura: You are very wellcomed in here to be a part of this practice thread. As you have seen there's an image or an exercise every day which can be done by anyone. So if you like just participate.
Your image is a good start, but there are some problems with the anatomy. For example the eyes are almost in the middle of the head. That means that the upper head is as long as the lower head. Your upper head is to short its a common mistake and noting really major, just take care with your next image.

I've been thinking I should thank atleast once all of you who provide the images, activities and critiques for this thread. I usually never practice, and when I do I tend to not push myself too hard. hey everyone heres my mountain image. I changed it a bit. Since I'm more the snowboard guy I changed the character. The ratio is changed as well to get more of a landscape view. Also I made my character a bit smaller to get more of a wide are feeling. And I put the character more to the left to enhance the image from the composition standpoint. I enjoyed this one a lot and could go on with it for quite some time. I spent around an hour and 10 minutes for it.

Hiya,
I hope that everyone has had a fabulous holiday. It is time to do some more studies. I meant to post these earlier, and I have some catching up to do, but I haven't had the time that I would like to devote to this.
Nice new reference, TedNindo, and welcome back sir. The jawline seems to be a bit off on your piece from the reference. I don't think that you completely captured the smirk, but you still capture some of it :). I like it overall, and I agree on the colour. Your piece is rich with colour, but I dont' think that you caught all of the rich tone on the right side. On your piece covering the guy, I agree the anatomy is really off, and the landscape seems a bit cartoonesque and jarring. I do like the concept though, and you have captured the emotion of the man.
Nice little sketch, Irandy12. You should do a colour comp of it as well.
ChrisGreyknight, I like the colour of your woman, but I think that the face is pretty off. I feel that if you fixed the facial structure. The piece itself would be a great deal better. A very nice attempt, and I like the colour work.
Okay here are the pieces that I have so far, on this system that is.
The first is the bust of St. Peter. I spent about 45 to 50 minutes on this piece. I tried to get the information and shapes down quickly, but I needed to fix some of the anatomy and form. It was a learning experience to play with the new brush that I found.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/BustofStPeter1.jpg
The second is the arctic scene, and I also altered the piece a bit. I had a sniper in his ghuille suit wandering the frozenwaste land. I might another, as I realyl enjoyed the subject and scene. I love snow and winter scenes, and I wonder, if I will see one anytime soon. It doesn't snow here in Scottsdale. I spent about a hour or so on it. I am not sure, as I did this piece last week. It was really a enjoyable piece.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/winterland1.jpg
The gladiatoral clad woman was decently enjoyable as well, and it was a nice one for working out pose and anatomy. The first is the gesture that I built the piece on. I liked the gesture quite a bit, and I generally do a couple gestures for the figures, but this was one of the few that I felt the first captured it. I ended up spending a little over 2 hours on it. I feel that I spent to long on it, and I kept getting caught noodling out the details, instead of capturing the colour and shapes. I am finding that I get a bit OCD on the details .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gladiatorwomangesture.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gladiatorwoman1.jpg
I love animals as well, so I enjoyed this reference. I wanted to test various new brushes, and I tried not to become trapped with the details. I spent about 40 to 45 minutes on this one, and it was a nice learning experience dealing with fur and such. I found that I had quite a few brushes to assist in simulating it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/gopher1.jpg

Hi there!
I have one question.. i'm learning speed painting too (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=271&t=689021&page=1&pp=15). As you guys in this thread, i'm using reference pictures too. Do you have to ask author of stock image (reference) for permission and credit him (when you are using stock for speed painting - which means that you don't c/p, use color pickup tool..)?
I always ask for permission and i credit stock when i'm doing photomanipulations or matte painting but i never credit/ask for permission when i'm using stock as reference..
TedNindo
01-06-2009, 11:44 AM
hey wo0lf,
this thread is for training puropos only so theres no commercial use of the reference or the "training results". Thats why I never ask the autor for permission. I although leave watermarks as in the last picture to give credits to the autor of the phots or the paintings. To be honest I'm not comletely sure if that 100% legal but since theres no commercial backthough I guess it should be ok. I guess it's allways better to ask the autor but that would make the daily posts almost impossible. Maybe someone else can clarify this topic without strafing to much away from the main purpos of this thread... training...
by the way I've seen that you used quite some references from this thread please feel free to post your stuff here in this thread as well and share your experience, problems and solutions with the rest of the community - that would be great.

Hello GaugeQueen and welcome to this thread. Good to see you posting and your pictures sure do have potential. I really like the hand of the supervillan. There are some anatomy issuse for example in the head the jawbones seem to be to high. I'm looking forward to see more from you.
shapemaster: your before/after image is cool. I like that you went more over the top then me. the feulage is blocked in very nicely good colors.
donom: your alien is cool! I somehow like it. The distorted facial featurs and the colors.
The Brentano is especialy nice. Form, values and the placement of the features are very good.
Here is my attempt of todays reference image. This one was very hard but with a bit patience it somehow worked. (40 minutes)

todays exercise is to to draw/paint this scenery so that it would fit a game or a film better. Maybe change the character, pose lighting. Whatever you think to make it look more appealing.

Hiya,
very very nice work everyone. :) Welcome back to everyone from the holidays. You guys have been busy.
TedNindo really nice work, sir. I like your bust paint the best, but I think that your old barn turned out well also. I like the brushes that you used for the grass and landscape. The lips seem to be a bit off on your sculpture piece. I think that it turned out well though. I like your drenched man as well. I think that you captured his gesture quite nicely. my biggest critique would be his mouth. it seems a bit off more like he is smirking than refreshed from the water.
Good work as always, Shapemaster, but I wish that you added more high lights on your female model. Your tree in the downtown was a nice concept. I remember that look, when I lived in NYC. I like to colours and the perspective. I do wish, if you pushed more detail in the surroundings, but that is mroe of a nitpick.
Nice work Donom, I like your bust painting the best. I think that you caught the forms and values nicely. Your alien is a good concept as well, The "smirk" works nicely on the character. I wish that you pushed some the values a bit more though.
Nice rendering on your womans behind, ChrisGreyknight, but I think that you could have pushed the temperature of the colours more. I think that the values could have been enhanced as well. On your model, I like the texture and the painting that you did of her. Something seems off to me. I think that it may be the chin or lips, but overall very well done.
Welcome to the thread, GaugeQueen, and hope to see more frm you. Nice idea for the super villian, but you might want to flesh out the anatomy a bit more, as it seems off. A nice start though, adn I like the idea for the alien. I do wish if you pushed the values a bit mroe on it to really pop it.
Nice work on the alien, AnniDkH, and I like the concept. the anatomy seems a bit off, but I think that you handled the idea well. The style is very ''graphic design'' but I like it.
Okay here are a few of mine, and I am not overly happy with them, but they were all learning experiences. I hoping to finish more, but I am kind of strapped for time, trying to finish up portfolio and demo reel, and I bet all of us has been there before. The babbling shall surcease. :)
First is the super villian, I altered and changed this one so many times. I think that I spent 50 minutes on it. I am still not happy with it, but I won't learn, if I don't show what I don't like. He is able to manipulate metals and magnetism. He can alter metal into a liquid form to cover him for protection, and since he can break them down to the molecular structure, he can temper them further. I tried to keep it really loose.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/supervillan1.jpg
On the alien model, I spent about 40 minutes on it. I was reading my Call of Cthulhu players handbook, and I thought about the Star Spawn. her tentacles move as a octopus, and she can latch up someones head, whlie opening her mouth wide to feast. It was a fun little exercise.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/alienmodel1.jpg
Unknown to Santa, his wife has been working out and learning more about certain techniques as a gift for her hard working husband, who she really did not get to see for a month or 2. It is his very own present to unwrap that night, which shocked our erstwhile present deliverer. I spent far longer than I wanted, since i got lost noodling out the details. I am not completley happy with it, but it was a lot of fun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/santaswife1.jpg
I really enjoyed doing the bust, and I am wanting to work on more. I had a few issues with the forms, but I think that I captured them decently but I am still not completley content with it. I went straight with the value, drawing with the ''paint'' instead of making a line drawing first. I spent about 45 to 50 minutes on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/malebust1.jpg
I spent far longer on this piece that I meant. I should have pulled the gesture down first, but I wanted to try and draw with the ''paint''. It was a nice learning experience, even if I am not overly happy with it. I spent about a hour and a half on it. I need to get a lot faster with my painting.

hey everyone
theres a lot to catch up so lets start:
aethalin: Thank you for your critic it is as allways very appreciated. And your right the mouth of the wet guy looks bad. I have a general problem with drawing mouths or lips.
Your metallman looks good but I would prefere bigger shaps and less wild strokes for liquid metal. The alien looks good the mouth is horrible (not the execution but the look). But here as well I would recommend bigger strokes. The Miss Santa image is cool. Nice idea - would have been cool if you would have used warmer colors for the foreground and colder for the background to set a contrast, but anyhow I like how you renderd the girl. Very good shapes and forms on the bust. The eyes look very belivable. In your last image I like how you captured the artificial lighting in contrast to the background.
w0olf: Good to see you back. Somehow I like your image. I would wish you would have used a different lighting, maybe more red or orange from the fire.
donom: I think your image of the does a lot of thigs very well. Good actionpose and you changed the lighting to make it more dramatic. I don't like the hard edges on the hand with the hammer - think back darkness = softer edges..
Your mouse is very cute!
paraffinumliquidum: welcome to this thread. I am very sure that you will progress if you practice on a regular basis. I would be happy to see your progress here in this thread.
I like the mouse picture. Good pose and very good colors on the cheese.
fischkopf: I am very happy to see you back here. The shading is very good, with just a few big strokes you renderd the figure. Really nice. Good colorselction and I like the expression on the face. I wish to see more from you.

GaugeQueen: I think trying is very important. It was a very difficult picture yesterday. I tried and set different things on different layers. The trees the feuillage, the ground and so on.. That helped

Hiya,
TedNindo, Thank you sir, and I agree that I need to work with bigger shapes. I have been testing both ways, but I think that I am not getting it quite yet. The alien, I tried for a almost mix between predator and a H.P. Lovecraft creature. I may work into it more and fix it, as I like the idea for the assignment. :) I really like what you did with the mouse, it is very cute and has nice flow and colour use. On your forest scene, I know what you mean. It was a bit difficult, but one thing that you can try is a couple different brushes. I worked on quite a few layers on mine. Look at all the colours in the reference, there are so many different shade of green with varying intensity and temperature. I would try to work in layers more and use colour and value to pull things forward and push them back. I would try throwing down a base tone first, then work out the lights ad darks. ti makes it easier from there to find the various hues and temperatures. I hope that this helped? I like the idea of the girl, as it appears that she is struggling with that massive sword. You are correct the anatomy is off, especially on her right arm and hand. For the difficulty of the pose and not havign refernce on the pose, you did decently well. :) I would try a couple gestures first, or look at the mechanics of the form, ala Bridgeman and Vilppu. Well done nonetheless, sir and I hope to see more.
paraffinumLiquidum, nice idea and at least you can make a joke out of it. :) I do the same, if a piece is not coming along. My various sketchbooks have had silly pictures in them to cover up the aweful ones that preceded them. I really like what you did with the mouse. it turned out nice. I also like the fort on in the mountains. You kept the forms simple, but you pushed well with colour. I think that you simulated the enviroment nicely with such few strokes.
fischkopf, nice colour use and gestural quality of the piece. I think that you kept it pretty consistent, but I wish that you brought the legs and feet up to the quality of the other parts. You should post more often.
GaugeQueen, Aww your mouse is adorable, and well done. Don't worry about your style, as it will just take time. I also had a cartoon style for so long, granted I was a 2d animator as well. :)
donom, your mouse turn out very cute and the scene has a lot of character. Well done!! Your caught a nice gesture with your blackmith, you might want to check the anatomy, especially his right arm with the hammer.
wo0lF, it is godo to post, even when we don't like a piece. We can learn so much from our faults, so well done for posting it. You ahve a nice gestural style with it, but you might want to push the shapes further. It will enhance it quite a bit, then you can clean up the anatomy further.
Okay starting off is the Bellini, I spent about 50 minutes on this one. I tried my newer method of painting out the shapes and forms, instead of relying on a line drawing. it is a interesting method and one that I have not really used since college. I think that I will explore it further, as it ups my workflow by quite a bit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/speedrepaint1.jpg
Next is the mouse, which I had a blast playing with. I worked fast on this one. I think 25 to 30 mintues at most, but I really enjoyed doing it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/mousehavingcheese.jpg
The blacksmith idea was a really nice assignment, and I am somewhat happy with this one. I finished it in about 50 minutes to a hour, and I made so many variations on it, before I came up with this at the end. I learned a lot on it, and I need to study the lighting further.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/aethalin/blacksmith1.jpg
ON the forest scene, I tried vaious brushes and various shades of green on layers. I want to work backi into it, as I need more forest scenes and practice for my portfolio. I learned a lot on it, but I am not completely happy with it yet. I spent about 50 minutes to a hour on it.

aethalin: I am very happy that you keep on posting here. It motivates me to push myself and continiue myself. Thanks!
To your bellini. Interessting I started myself some times ago with getting rid of the initial sketch and start with painting forms and for me most of the times it works rather well. I miss the rich darks in your image I guess thats why the image looks a bit blury but on the ohter hand you managed to hit those warm skintones very well. What I miss entirely is the side of backlight that enlightens the right side of the head a bit.
Your mousepicture is very cut I can see that you had fun. Good colors on the cheese.
Really nice work on the blacksmith its very much like I have imagined it. Its a shame that I never managed to get my handy on this one. I need to go back to that. Very nice warm/cold contrast trough clever lighting.
I like your forestpicture very much and I guess it is because of its soft but complete structure. Its difficult to describe. But compared to the orignial it lacks a bit in contrast. I will choose something similar as reference soon. So we can practice even more ;-)
here is mine. was fun. I feel that I could have used more colorvariation in the skin but I didn't know where to start. The anatomy was fun I guess it is because of the unnatural nature of the pose its not your common thing. I guess thats the reason why you don't get to much distraction from other things.

Wow, I love both of your forest pictures actually. The only thing with yours, I think, Ted, is that the leaves look kind of flat compared to the rest of the picture. I think maybe starting with blocks of color in a bigger, less grainy brush, then painting over them with the textured brush you used could change that. Though my own looks so flat my advice should be disqualified, hahaha.
