View Full Version : Renderman FUR/HAIR
corcoran3d 05-26-2008, 10:10 PM Hey everyone,
I really need your help figuring this problem out. I'm using FUR attached to a HAIR System for dynamics inside MAYA and rendering with Renderman. When it renders I get something really weird at the tips of each blade. I have attached an image rendered with the Maya Software render to show what the FUR should look like and the bad image I got with Renderman. I want to use Renderman because for the Deep Shadowing.
Please help!
Thanks,
Matt

Looks like self shadowing artifacts to me.
Usually for renderman based renderers, you'd change the default shadow bias value in a maya light to something higher. Start with a shadow bias value of 0.2 and see if it gets rid of the problem. However, be careful not to increase it too much as shadows might get "detached" from the fur strands and look a little unnatural.

Thanks,
I tired changing the Shadow bias and it didn't help. However I think I figured out what was wrong. I think the "Grass Fur" I was using might not be compatible with Renderman 1.0. Could be wrong but I remade the scene using a different fur and didn't get the black tips.
Thanks for you help!

I haven't used Renderman 1.0 thoroughly but from whatever I've learnt from others, it indeed was very buggy.
However, a fur preset shouldn't be the problem. After all, its just a collection of pre defined attribute settings. What is however possible that maybe there was some kind of noise applied to the tip color or some attribute of the fur description (in the details section) which wasn't being translated correctly by the renderer.
The new fur description you created probably got rid of those noise values. Anyway, glad that its working fine for you now!
