View Full Version : SSS Problems, Not Working

Alright, so I have SSS (Fast Skin) on a character and everything seemed to work fine until we changed the lighting from simple directional lights to GI_Joe.

When we changed lights, everything broke. I haven't gotten further than the subdermal (since I change that first)... but what it seems is that the subdermal starts from the left eye socket and emits from there. It doesn't go through the ears or neck (Which is much less in diameter than the head). So basically, I'm lost.

Funny thing is is that I created a new SSS shader and it worked fine... but due to referencing and what not, I couldn't use the new shader. I'm stuck fixing the old one.

Attached are pictures of the problem. Same settings just different angles.

Any help will be much appreciated, even if you're not sure since I am all out of solutions.

Thanks in advance guys!

Can you post a pic of your shader network. It looks as if the lightmap is not connected properly. Also I wouldn't recommend GI_Joe with SSS. I've never gotten it to look good. I find the best lighting is standard 3 point. If you need real GI. You can have Mental Ray do that. Also combining final gather with HDRI lighting will look awesome too. GI_Joe I feel is dated. I used it back in 2001 and it was ok then, but now kinda pointless.

Thanks for replying Jesse,

Here's the images of the shading group

As you can see there actually is no lightmap connected, although it says there is. And when I click on the arrow box, it goes to the lightmap properties. Anyways, I tried creating a new lightmap and the same problem persists. Any clues?

try edit the scale conversion in the algorithm control section of the sss shader.
set it to sthg like 50.
