View Full Version : Sky tool in AR - a strange render artifact

Hi All

I generally use the HDRI sky images for GI in external rendered scenes, occaisionally I use the Sky tool in AR to quickly set up a sky with accurate sun positions, one constent issue that has bothered me is a change which consistently occurs in my images. I use proceedural textures so it isn't a mapping issue and I use high Stochastic samples and high min and max settings. I attach an example, I wonder if anyone else has this issue. The attached image is an early rendering.... The change I am refering to is a line in the image which follows the geometry of the model, it is a slightly lighter texture above the line (when the texture is the same)

Anybody see an attachment? I do not see an attachment...

no attachment visible

BTW off topic: did you already try the new xStream build? There is now a new final official build available that should solve your problem I hope.

Hi odo,

I did indeed try build 292711 when it was hot off the press and verified that it at least works to some degree. I do a lot of different xStream-related things, so I don't recall which problem you were referring to. The biggest problem by far that I can think of is the way that shadows from xStream objects (like trees) can be nice and soft if they fall on other xStream objects (ground, for example), but are always wicked hard if they fall upon host app objects (say, a sidewalk modeled in C4D). That disparity makes the whole scene look totally fake. But as you said, this is OT.

Let me try and upload the images again.

On the xStream issue, got the program stable with the latest upgrade when running as a stand alone, but as a plugin within C4D it is a joke, keeps crashing and as someone above said too many unexpected and difficult to control results.....

The images made it up there this time. But I can't discern the issue you mentioned. Maybe because the images are so small?

can't see anything of what you mentioned

look at the roof material - there is a point at which the roof texture changes to a lighter colour. (nothing to do with xStream)

Can't see it, i must be blind

I can see it on the closeup picture. Halfway the roof the colour of the upper part of the roof gets lighter indeed.
No idea how that occured, sorry.

Edit Off topic again:

@ Thirdeye: That korean drummer is just freak'n hilarious! :bounce:

This is either caused by the roof phong tag which should be set at around 10 or
it's caused by a cloud shadow.

Nope neither - but thanks for taking the trouble to look, it is consistent in most images when I use the sky tool in AR.

You might be better off using a hdri on a sky object.
You could adjust the GI strength in the material settings.

hi,
can you isolate the roof mesh, and see if it still happens?
or upload the roof-mesh only scene?
