Hi there guys. I have been trying to find out if maya has this feature for ages now. When I first ever touched a 3d program it was 3D max, which has this nice little tick box for textures saying 'self illuminating' it can be really handy at times. It basically makes the textures light up so they can be seen even if in the dark - but they don't cast light or glow, they're just lit up like a photo transparency on a light box.

Can this be done in Maya?

Yea in the shader you can map your texture to the incandescence channel instead of, or as well as, the colour channel. Alternatively you can use a surface shader which doesnt do any shading calculations and will render the texture as it would appear normally.
