Hello Everyone.

Here's a raptor I've been working on and recently decided to give it some texturing.

Thanks,
-Rob

Here's the model:

And here's a test with the color and bump maps applied. This was done before I actually created UVs, so the mapping is not quite right (i.e. -around the bottom jaw line).

Thanks everyone,
-Rob

I'm seriously impressed. I've seen a lot of dinos but really have never seen a progression piece like yours. The model is done very well and even though you say the mapping is not quite right, the texture is looking sweet. With a few more adjustments in lighting and texture you'll have yourself a photoreal piece. Good job man. Looking forward to seeing a finished product. Are you gonna have him doing anything? If so, I'd try to go against the norm and put him in a scene or situation that a raptor wouldn't traditionally be... Maybe something humorous or slapstick. Just a suggestion...

I have to know - what software are you using?

And how on earth did you get that bump map to change the definition of the model????? Did you use a displacement as well? I just can't figure out how a bump map alone would create such definition
The eyes... wow, they are brilliant  (forgot to mention that before :))

Damn it Rob. You have stars!

Leigh:
I'm using Microsoft Word....just kidding :) Like yourself, I'm a Lightwave user. (7.0b) I'm using 4 different bump map layers. 1-The one pictured above with a gausian blur to smooth out the bump. 2-One just like the pictured bump above to emphasize the skin pattern. 3-A proceduaral bump to add randomness ...and 4-Another procedural bump to add even more apparent detail. To answer your question, on the outer edges of the model I cheated and fixed the edges in Photoshop post render to make it appear as geometry. In the final version I plan to at least attempt using displacement mapping, but for tests it just takes way too long. (around 20-30 minutes just for preprocessing because of the high subpatch levels needed) I painted the eye in Photoshop while looking in a mirror at my own. (I of course, changed the coloration a bit for this purpose) :) Thanks for the positive comments and the rating.

One thing I do think, having examined this really closely, is I do agree with Anthony that his tongue should be made, maybe...erm... wetter? It does look a bit dry, although, when I think of reptiles, I generally don't imagine they have a lot of er.. gob, for some reason...

Here's a quick update. I started painting the rest of the color map today. As you can tell, I haven't painted the insides of the arms and legs yet. There's still a few textures problems that need to be fixed (top of head), but I thought I'd show my progress.

OK, the texture on the body, especially the hips, is getting buggered up a bit. Try softening the bump more, and increasing its amplitude there. You could even try adding some geometry in that area, since LW doesn't like to do the displacements(the benefit ILM has in JP movies). :bounce: good Heavens I love those bouncing fellows

robpauza
04-23-2002, 07:38 AM
Thanks Anthony. Guess what ...I just realized that I used the wrong bump map in the above render, hence the "buggered upness." I'll fix it later. Thanks for the bump amplitude advice. I'll do some entensive testing in that area when I finish the color map(s).

Thanks again,
-Rob

The bumps on the head and neck are awesome, but on the body and above all the legs are a little bit too much... I think... Anyone else seeing that?

Apart from that, I just wanted to contribute my own view of the overall concept design:

Awesome Rob, just awesome  :applause:
I do, however, also think that the bump on the head and neck is better than the bump on the rest of the body.
But otherwise - wow!!
You've got to send that to ILM - I'm sure the will take you on to work on the next Jurassic Park!!
Your colour map is excellent - I love the stipes down the back. Really really inspiring work  :buttrock:

Man Your raptor is great and the skin is also wonderful.
But did you know that they think that the dinosaurs didn't have a skin like this but that they actually had feathers. In the Gobi desert (China) <-- if I'm right, was a fossilised dinosaur found with a feather texture in the stone. Oviaraptor it means egg eater but that is a mistake this Oviaraptor laid eggs and then they found some skeletons on some eggs so they thought that he died during stealing the eggs. But those eggs are his own kids.

How would a feather texture look like? :p

hehe. It's funny how Jurassic Park is the definitive resource for dinos. Really their guess is as good as anyone elses.
Anyway, I think you should try and make it even more different from the JP standard. And then maybe you would be right and ILM would be wrong. ;)

The grid bumpmap that you use is fine in the neck and head zone, but looks odd in the middle part of the body, looks like the plastic dino in Toy Story. Make the lines closer to the other and thiner and not so square, make it rounded like.

But your model is awesome and your diffuse map is very good. Keep the good work.:buttrock:

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the critiques. This really enforces what I've been thinking myself -that the body doesn't look quite right yet. It was really rushed compared to the head and it shows. I plan to do a lot of rethinking texture-wise in the next few days.

Thanks again for the great comments.

First off, let me just say that the model and textures are absolutely fabulous:thumbsup: . If I could make one suggestion to you about the bumps. I think what the problem is is the displacement of the bumps in relation to the animal's size. Right now the depth of the wrinkle bumpmap suggests a skin similar to an elephant. While this would work for a really large dino (t-rex, or braciosaur type) it might be too much for a raptor which is closer in size to a human or horse at most. What I'd suggest is decreasing the displacement of the wrinkle bump and increasing the displacement of the skin's scaleiness (the scales on the skin):hmm: Just a constructive suggestion. Again fantastic work  :buttrock: :applause:

Wow man nice stuff. As far as the colors go I like them both. It almost seems like you could use both of them. The first color scheme is more muted and "camoflaged" the second is more bright and contrasty. This would be perfect for a male and female version of your raptor. If you think about reptiles and birds the females are often more earth tones and muted and the males are more brightly colored to attract mates. It looks to me like your two designs would fit that bill. Absolutely goregous work man...really great.

ZrO-1
05-04-2002, 12:21 PM
Hmmmm...for an enviroment...

I would say you could go either of two ways. Given your raptor's coloration I'd either go with a temperate climate rain forest like in washington state. Or I'd go 180 from that and have it be a tropical praire similar to the african savana.

The forest would offer more oportunities for a dramatic enviroment, where you could add fog and cast shadows as well as dew on the ferny undergrowth. The savana would offer some really wild sunset/rise situations though.

Or...you could go completely different and do a composite of your dinos placed in a museum as if they came back to life and are roaming about again. They could be placed infront of a skeletal display of a raptor with them examining it as if the recognise it.

Just some thoughts.

JacquesD

I don't if I could use your image to do a quick test in Photohsop, if I couldn't, I'm sorry.
Anyway, as I advised you, I added some extra reflection(Photoshop) to the skin and did a very quick work on colors to try a little composite.
It's very basic but I think that might work if you would work a bit more on the reflection(using a mask and a fresnel effect of course), redefine the bump texture and tweak the lighting.
Good luck. :)

to quote the bard.."DUDE! SWEET!" :buttrock:

Really fantastic, the texture totally pops with more directional lighting. At least as far as can tell from the pic. If you can't do one big one, any chance of a few closeups of the same shot?

As for the environment itself, that looks awesome too. Not sure if it's 'right' for the dino.. But then maybe it's nice to see the poor raptor in a tranquil setting, they're always the villains. :)

Does seem like maybe he's about to attack Shrek though. Out of curiosity, how'd you make the trees? That all polys?

Hey there Rob, I really like your environment, but somehow I kinda envisioned him in a more jungleish place.. :hmm: I
Although your environment is very nicely done
One thing though - that very bright light has kinda flattened his side a bit, losing the bump map there....

I agree. I don't really like it either, but I wanted to post it just to add something new to the thread. Hopefully, I'll make improvements with each update. (that's the plan anyway) Thanks for your continued interest.

TheWolf:
Yeah, you win the prize. :) The scene lighting isn't consistent with the cloud lighting. (I just liked the clouds flipped in that direction better. -didn't think anyone would notice) Look below for a "more dangerous" environment.

-------------------------------------------

Here's another environment I've been working on. I think I'll scrap the first one unless I decide to have the raptor flying a kite or something in the scene. :)

As my brother reminded me today, I'm entered in the "character" challenge, so maybe I'm worrying too much with the environment aspect. I may decide in the end to ditch the environment all together for the challenge.

Anyway, here's the pic:

Like the BG much better.

IMO If you restage it and add some major folliage in the FG it
would look really sweet.

Lookin Great!

for the setting, definetely needs some plantlife, but the most noticable is that the beast would have to make footprints in the ground, looks like hard clay or mud right?

oh yeah, add'n some d.o.f. would look niiiiiiice

keep it up

Adam:thumbsup:

Once more, very cool! :scream: Definitely more like a dino's 'hood. Also great to see it closer and better..really nice.

I agree some foliage would be cool, maybe some jungley mist? without obscuring any of the kickassness, that is.

Thanks Adam & Hypercube for the comments.

Okay everyone...

After reading the challenge guidelines again, I decided to leave out the environment all together since I'm doing a character. Here is my final image for this challenge:

The full render is located here:

Thanks again to everyone for the incredible feedback. It's much appreciated.

 Verrrrrry nice. Like the more agressive yet subdued colour scheme as well. Bump Displacement on the closeups?

Great solution for the background, too! Looks like a difficult studio shoot..need a real good wrangler :D

Anyway, Most Excellent.

Thanks again Hypercube,

I'm glad the "photo studio shoot" setting/theme is evident. I was sort of wondering if it would be.

I guess I'll go ahead and get my 3 hours of sleep before I have to get up and go to work.......:insane:

Take care,
-Rob

A piece of work equal to that of ILM's Jurassic Park inhabitants, as far as I am concerned

Your work is truly the epitome of excellence. \:cool:/
Btw you should really submit this to Newtek's gallery, I'm sure they would love to have it grace their site.

Don't have a clue how you did it but i'm glad you did :buttrock:

I don't have the words to describe how amazing it is.....it's like you've spent a month for each inch exploring it with scope, done the detailing and fixing required...... inch by inch.

It is an honor to cast my vote for you

Hehe, there's so much wrong with that... :)

Does anybody have an actual photo for reference? If so, please email it to me. I'd be very grateful...
