View Full Version : Is it time for me to say goodbye to my PC?
snickrep 05-23-2008, 04:31 AM I've been told that I need to buy a new computer soon, especially to utilize today's software to the fullest. Here are the specs for my computer:
3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU
2GB of 400 DDR memory
200GB Ultra ATA 7200RPM hard drive
nVidia geforce 7600GT 256MB video card
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
The only programs I current use are Wings 3d and photoshop, and I'm also looking into Silo and Vue 6. I don't play many games, however, I have recently been playing Half-Life 2, Dreamfall, and Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

No necessarily.
add one or two more Gigs of RAM.
Bigger disc maybe (make sure you have enough space for Swap file)
and the Graphics card isn't super-duper anymore.
but single core 3 GhZ still get you around the bend, and buying something now, if you don't need it, will make you regret not waiting 6-12 months more (8-16 cores CPU's ?)

I recommend upgrading it because we got the same specs~! I also have 2GB. Since your on vista and im on Xp, Vista takes more memory to run that puppy and trust me, I got my machine back in 2003. Its kind of tough to do 2008 work with a half of decade machine. I mean I can do all of my maya projects, photoshop projects, and zbrush. They all work just fine. However, when it comes to rendering or jacking up the subdivison, or DPI, I wish I had a quad core >_<

I still use a P4 2.8GHz w/ 1.5GB DDR RAM loaded with XP Pro to work with AutoCAD, LightWave, Photoshop and a host of other apps. While I could always use more horsepower (who doesn't?) for rendering and the like the computer still holds up well.
Stop listening to whoever told you that you "need" to get a new PC.
Let me guess, they are also the same person that recommended you install Vista too, right?
That PC isn't fast by todays standards, but then again looking at the programs you run, it should be perfectly fine (unless you do very heavy PS work, or very heavy Silo models and such)... just get rid of Vista and your whole system will probably run much smoother.
BTW I do not play PC games, so I am not going to comment on your PC's gaming performance.

You can easily get a quadcore PC with better specs for around $500-$600 today. If you do alot of rendering and what not, then you will benefit from the power. Otherwise, you are fine.

Of everything you listed absolutely nothing would benefit from a new pc much other than maybe Vue.
For modelling hardware specced up five years ago is just fine (my old six years old laptop still runs any modelling and dev task just fine, and that's with apache and mysql running on it in the background since it's also my testbed server for pipeline work).
You might find yourself starved for cpu power and memory with that configuration only if you ran rendering intensive tasks on it, which might be the case for vue. Bar that you should simply fall back to xp, tweak it up a bit, and you'll see all the performance boost you need for what you do.

Question, would a Athlon 64 X2 be better even if it's 2.2Ghz?
